1 Put the trumpet to your lips! Like an eagle the enemy comes against the house of the LORD, Because they have transgressed My covenant And rebelled against My law.
1 Set the trumpet to thy mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the LORD, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law.
1 [Put] the horn to your mouth! One like an eagle comes against the house of the Lord, because they transgress My covenant and rebel against My law.
1 "Sound the ram's horn! Like a vulture the enemy will come against the Temple of the LORD, because Israel violated my covenant, transgressing my Law.
1 Set the trumpet to your lips! [The enemy] comes as a [great] vulture against the house of the Lord, because they have broken My covenant and transgressed against My law.
3 Israel has rejected the good; The enemy will pursue him.
3 Israel hath cast off the thing that is good: the enemy shall pursue him.
3 Israel has rejected what is good; an enemy will pursue him.
3 "Israel has discarded what is good. The enemy will pursue them.
3 Israel has rejected the good [with loathing]; the enemy shall pursue him.
4 They have set up kings, but not by Me; They have appointed princes, but I did not know it With their silver and gold they have made idols for themselves, That they might be cut off.
4 They have set up kings, but not by me: they have made princes, and I knew it not: of their silver and their gold have they made them idols, that they may be cut off.
4 They have installed kings, but not through Me. They have appointed leaders, but without My approval. They make their silver and gold into idols for themselves for their own destruction.
4 They set kings in place, but not by me. They established princes, whom I did not recognize. They crafted idols for themselves from their silver and gold; as a result, they will be destroyed.
4 They set up kings, but not from Me [therefore without My blessing]; they have made princes or removed them [without consulting Me; therefore], I knew and recognized [them] not. With their silver and their gold they made idols for themselves, that they [the silver and the gold] may be destroyed.
5 He has rejected your calf, O Samaria, saying, "My anger burns against them!" How long will they be incapable of innocence?
5 Thy calf, O Samaria, hath cast thee off; mine anger is kindled against them: how long will it be ere they attain to innocency?
5 Your calf-idol is rejected, Samaria. My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable of innocence?
5 Your calf, Samaria, has been thrown away. My anger is burning against them. How long until they become pure again?
5 Your calf [idol], O Samaria, is loathsome and I have spurned it. My wrath burns against them. How long will it be before they attain purity?
6 For from Israel is even this! A craftsman made it, so it is not God; Surely the calf of Samaria will be broken to pieces.
6 For from Israel was it also: the workman made it; therefore it is not God: but the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.
6 For this thing is from Israel- a craftsman made it, and it is not God. The calf of Samaria will be smashed to bits!
6 Because from Israel it was fashioned by craftsmen, it is not God; therefore Samaria's calf will be broken in pieces.
6 For this [calf] too is from Israel; a craftsman made it; therefore it is not God. The calf of Samaria shall be broken to shivers and go up in flames.
7 For they sow the wind And they reap the whirlwind The standing grain has no heads; It yields no grain. Should it yield, strangers would swallow it up.
7 For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk: the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.
7 Indeed, they sow the wind and reap the whirlwind. There is no standing grain; what sprouts fails to yield flour. Even if they did, foreigners would swallow it up.
7 "Because they sow the wind, they will reap the wind storm. The plant has no stalk and its bud yields no grain. Even if there's a harvest, foreigners will gobble it up.
7 For they sow the wind and they shall reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no heads; it shall yield no meal; if it were to yield, strangers and aliens would eat it up.
8 Israel is swallowed up; They are now among the nations Like a vessel in which no one delights.
8 Israel is swallowed up: now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel wherein is no pleasure.
8 Israel is swallowed up! Now they are among the nations like discarded pottery.
8 Israel has been devoured; now they will live among the nations like a worthless container.
8 Israel is [as if] swallowed up. Already they have become among the nations as a vessel [of cheap, coarse pottery] that is useless.
9 For they have gone up to Assyria, Like a wild donkey all alone; Ephraim has hired lovers.
9 For they are gone up to Assyria, a wild ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath hired lovers.
9 For they have gone up to Assyria [like] a wild donkey going off on its own. Ephraim has paid for love.
9 "Because they went over to Assyria, they are like a wild donkey alone by itself. Ephraim has hired some lovers.
9 For they are gone up to Assyria, a wild ass taking her own way by herself; Ephraim has hired lovers.
10 Even though they hire allies among the nations, Now I will gather them up; And they will begin to diminish Because of the burden of the king of princes.
10 Yea, though they have hired among the nations, now will I gather them, and they shall sorrow a little for the burden of the king of princes.
10 Even though they hire [lovers] among the nations, I will now round them up, and they will begin to decrease in number under the burden of the king and leaders.
10 Even though they sold themselves to the nations, I will gather them. They will mourn for a while for the burden they were to the king and princes.
10 Yes, though with presents they hire [allies] among the nations, now will I gather them up, and in a little while they will sorrow and begin to diminish [their gifts] because of the burden (tribute) imposed by the king of princes [the king of Assyria].
11 Since Ephraim has multiplied altars for sin, They have become altars of sinning for him.
11 Because Ephraim hath made many altars to sin, altars shall be unto him to sin.
11 When Ephraim multiplied his altars for sin, they became his altars for sinning.
11 "The more altars Ephraim builds for sin, the more altars there will be for sin.
11 For Ephraim has multiplied altars for sinning; yes, to him altars are intended for sinning.
12 Though I wrote for him ten thousand precepts of My law, They are regarded as a strange thing.
12 I have written to him the great things of my law, but they were counted as a strange thing.
12 Though I were to write out for him ten thousand points of My law, they would be regarded as something alien.
12 I prescribed great things from my Law for them, but they considered them profane.
12 I wrote for him the ten thousand things of My law, but they are counted as a strange thing [as something which does not concern him].
13 As for My sacrificial gifts, They sacrifice the flesh and eat it, But the LORD has taken no delight in them Now He will remember their iniquity, And punish them for their sins; They will return to Egypt.
13 They sacrifice flesh for the sacrifices of mine offerings, and eat it; but the LORD accepteth them not; now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt.
13 Though they offer sacrificial gifts and eat the flesh, the Lord does not accept them. Now He will remember their guilt and punish their sins; they will return to Egypt.
13 They offer me meat from the sacrifices of my offerings, and they eat from it, but the LORD does not accept them. He will now remember their transgression and pay them back for their sins; to Egypt they will return.
13 My sacrificial gifts they sacrifice [as a mere form]; yes, they sacrifice flesh and eat it, but the Lord does not accept them. Now He will [earnestly] remember their guilt and iniquity and will punish their sins. They shall return to [another] Egypt [Assyria].
14 For Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces; And Judah has multiplied fortified cities, But I will send a fire on its cities that it may consume its palatial dwellings.
14 For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and buildeth temples; and Judah hath multiplied fenced cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the palaces thereof.
14 Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces; Judah has also multiplied fortified cities. I will send fire on their cities, and it will consume their citadels.
14 "Israel has neglected its maker in building palaces. Judah has multiplied its fortified cities, but I will send fire to their cities, and it will consume their fortresses."
14 For Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces and idol temples, and Judah has multiplied fortified cities; but I will send a fire upon his cities and it shall devour his palaces and fortified buildings.
