1 Set the trumpet to thy mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the LORD, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law.
1 "Sound the ram's horn! Like a vulture the enemy will come against the Temple of the LORD, because Israel violated my covenant, transgressing my Law.
1 Set the trumpet to your lips [announcing impending judgment]!Like a [great] vulture the enemy comes against the house of the Lord,Because they have broken My covenantAnd transgressed and rebelled against My law.
3 Israel has rejected the good; The enemy will pursue him.
3 Israel hath cast off the thing that is good: the enemy shall pursue him.
3 "Israel has discarded what is good. The enemy will pursue them.
3 Israel has rejected the good; The enemy shall pursue him.
4 They have set up kings, but not by me: they have made princes, and I knew it not: of their silver and their gold have they made them idols, that they may be cut off.
4 They set kings in place, but not by me. They established princes, whom I did not recognize. They crafted idols for themselves from their silver and gold; as a result, they will be destroyed.
4 They set up kings, but not from Me [therefore without My blessing];They have appointed princes, but I did not know it.With their silver and their gold they made idols for themselves,That they might be cut off.
5 Thy calf, O Samaria, hath cast thee off; mine anger is kindled against them: how long will it be ere they attain to innocency?
5 Your calf, Samaria, has been thrown away. My anger is burning against them. How long until they become pure again?
5 He has rejected your [pagan] calf, O Samaria, saying,“My wrath burns against them.”How long will they be incapable of innocence?
6 For from Israel was it also: the workman made it; therefore it is not God: but the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.
6 Because from Israel it was fashioned by craftsmen, it is not God; therefore Samaria's calf will be broken in pieces.
6 For even this [loathsome calf] is from Israel.A craftsman made it, so it is not God;Surely the calf of Samaria will be broken to pieces and go up in flames.
7 For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk: the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.
7 "Because they sow the wind, they will reap the wind storm. The plant has no stalk and its bud yields no grain. Even if there's a harvest, foreigners will gobble it up.
7 For they sow the wind [in evil]And they reap the whirlwind [in disaster].The standing grain has no growth; It yields no grain. If it were to yield, strangers would swallow it up.
8 Israel is swallowed up: now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel wherein is no pleasure.
8 Israel has been devoured; now they will live among the nations like a worthless container.
8 Israel is [as if] swallowed up [by enemies];They are now among the nationsLike a vessel [of cheap, coarse pottery] that is useless.
9 For they are gone up to Assyria, a wild ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath hired lovers.
9 "Because they went over to Assyria, they are like a wild donkey alone by itself. Ephraim has hired some lovers.
9 For they have gone up to Assyria,Like a wild donkey wandering alone and taking her own way;Ephraim has hired lovers (pagan allies).
10 Yea, though they have hired among the nations, now will I gather them, and they shall sorrow a little for the burden of the king of princes.
10 Even though they sold themselves to the nations, I will gather them. They will mourn for a while for the burden they were to the king and princes.
11 Because Ephraim hath made many altars to sin, altars shall be unto him to sin.
11 "The more altars Ephraim builds for sin, the more altars there will be for sin.
11 For Ephraim has constructed many altars for sin; They are altars intended for sinning [which multiply his guilt].
12 I have written to him the great things of my law, but they were counted as a strange thing.
12 I prescribed great things from my Law for them, but they considered them profane.
12 I wrote for him the ten thousand precepts of My law,But they are regarded as a strange thing [which does not concern him].
13 As for My (AA)sacrificial gifts,They (AB)sacrifice the flesh and eat it,But the Lord has taken no delight in them. Now He will (AC)remember their iniquity,And (AD)punish them for their sins; They will return to (AE)Egypt.
13 They sacrifice flesh for the sacrifices of mine offerings, and eat it; but the LORD accepteth them not; now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt.
13 They offer me meat from the sacrifices of my offerings, and they eat from it, but the LORD does not accept them. He will now remember their transgression and pay them back for their sins; to Egypt they will return.
13 As for My sacrificial offerings,They sacrifice the meat [as a mere formality] and eat it,But the Lord is not pleased with them and does not accept them. Now He will remember and take into account their wickedness and guilt,And punish them for their sins. They will return [in captivity] to [another] Egypt [that is, Assyria].(A)
14 For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and buildeth temples; and Judah hath multiplied fenced cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the palaces thereof.
14 "Israel has neglected its maker in building palaces. Judah has multiplied its fortified cities, but I will send fire to their cities, and it will consume their fortresses."
