1 (A)Do not rejoice, O Israel, (a)with exultation like the (b)nations!For you have (B)played the harlot, (c)forsaking your God.You have loved harlots’ earnings on (d)every threshing floor.
1 Rejoice not, O Israel, for joy, as other people: for thou hast gone a whoring from thy God, thou hast loved a reward upon every cornfloor.
1 Israel, do not rejoice jubilantly as the nations do,(A)for you have acted promiscuously,(B) leaving your God.You have loved the wages of a prostituteon every grain-threshing floor.(C)
1 "Don't celebrate, Israel, like other nations would rejoice, because you left your God by committing fornication, loving the profit you gained on all of the threshing floors.
1 Do not rejoice, O Israel, with exultation as do the [pagan] peoples,For you have played the prostitute, turning away from your God.You have loved prostitutes’ earnings on every threshing floor [attributing the harvest to the Baals instead of to God].
2 The floor and the winepress shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail in her.
2 Neither threshing floor nor winepress will sustain them, and the new wine will disappoint her.
2 The threshing floor and the wine press will no longer feed them,And the new wine will fail them [because they failed to honor the God who provides].
3 They will not remain in (D)the Lord’s land,But Ephraim will return to (E)Egypt,And in (F)Assyria they will eat (G)unclean food.
3 They shall not dwell in the LORD'S land; but Ephraim shall return to Egypt, and they shall eat unclean things in Assyria.
3 They will not stay in the land of the Lord.Instead, Ephraim will return to Egypt,(E)and they will eat unclean food(F) in Assyria.(G)
3 They will not live in the LORD's land Ephraim will return to Egypt, and they will eat unclean food in Assyria.
4 They will not pour out drink offerings of (H)wine to the Lord,(I)Their sacrifices will not please Him.Their bread will (f)be like (g)mourners’ bread;All who eat of it will be (J)defiled,For their bread will be for (h)themselves alone;It will not enter the house of the Lord.
4 They shall not offer wine offerings to the LORD, neither shall they be pleasing unto him: their sacrifices shall be unto them as the bread of mourners; all that eat thereof shall be polluted: for their bread for their soul shall not come into the house of the LORD.
4 They will not pour outtheir wine offerings to the Lord,(H)and their sacrifices will not please Him.Their food will be like the bread of mourners;all who eat it become defiled.(I)For their bread will be for their appetites alone;it will not enter the house of the Lord.
4 They won't present wine offerings to the LORD, nor will they please him. Their sacrifices will seem like food for mourners everyone who eats them will become unclean; none of them will enter the Temple of the LORD.
4 They will not pour out drink offerings of wine to the Lord;Their sacrifices will not please Him.Their bread will be like mourners’ bread [eaten at funerals];All who eat it will be [ceremonially] unclean,For their bread will be for themselves;It will not enter the house of the Lord [to be consecrated].
5 (K)What will you do on the day of the appointed festivalAnd on the day of the (L)feast of the Lord?
5 What will ye do in the solemn day, and in the day of the feast of the LORD?
5 "What will you do on the designated holiday, when the LORD's festival comes?
5 What will you do on the day of the appointed festivalAnd on the day of the feast of the Lord [when you are in exile]?
6 For behold, they will go because of destruction;Egypt will gather them up, (M)Memphis will bury them.Weeds will take over their treasures of silver;(N)Thorns will be in their tents.
6 For, lo, they are gone because of destruction: Egypt shall gather them up, Memphis shall bury them: the pleasant places for their silver, nettles shall possess them: thorns shall be in their tabernacles.
6 For even if they flee from devastation,Egypt will gather them, and Memphis will bury them.(L)Thistles will take possession of their precious silver;thorns will invade their tents.(M)
6 Look! They have gone away because of the destruction Egypt will gather them up, and Memphis will bury them. Weeds will overgrow their inheritance, and thorns will grow in their tents.
6 For behold, they will go away because of devastation and destruction;Egypt will gather them up, Memphis will bury them.Weeds will take over their treasures of silver;Thorns will grow in their tents.
7 The days of (O)punishment have come,The days of (P)retribution have come;(i)Let Israel know this!The prophet is a (Q)fool,The (j)inspired man is (R)demented,Because of the grossness of your (S)iniquity,And because your hostility is so great.
7 The days of visitation are come, the days of recompence are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the spiritual man is mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity, and the great hatred.
7 The days of punishment have come;(N)the days of retribution have come.(O)Let Israel recognize it!The prophet is a fool,(P)and the inspired man is insane,(Q)because of the magnitudeof your guilt and hostility.(R)
7 The time for your judgment has now come; payday is here and Israel knows it. The prophet is a fool, and the spiritual man is insane. Because of your great sin, the hatred against you is great.
7 The days of punishment have come;The days of retribution are at hand;Let Israel know this!The prophet is [considered] a fool;The man [of God] who is inspired is [treated as if] demented,Because of the abundance of your wickedness and guilt,And because your deep antagonism [toward God and the prophets] is so great.(B)
8 Ephraim was a watchman with my God, a prophet;Yet the snare of a bird catcher is in all his ways,And there is only hostility in the house of his God.
8 The watchman of Ephraim was with my God: but the prophet is a snare of a fowler in all his ways, and hatred in the house of his God.
8 Ephraim’s watchman is with my God.The prophet encounters a fowler’s snareon all his ways.(S)Hostility is in the house of his God!
8 While Ephraim stands watch with my God, the prophet has snares set that will trap his ways, and hostility lodges in the Temple of his God.
8 Ephraim was a watchman with my God, a [true] prophet [to warn the nation];But the snare of a bird catcher was laid in all his paths.And there is only deep hostility in the house of his God (the land of Israel).
9 They have gone (T)deep (k)in depravityAs in the days of (U)Gibeah;He will (V)remember their iniquity,He will punish their sins.
9 They have deeply corrupted themselves, as in the days of Gibeah: therefore he will remember their iniquity, he will visit their sins.
9 They have deeply corrupted themselves(T)as in the days of Gibeah.(U)He will remember their guilt;He will punish their sins.(V)
9 They have corrupted themselves deeply, as did Gibeah in its day. Therefore God will remember their lawlessness, and he will pay them back for their sins.
10 I found Israel like (W)grapes in the wilderness;I saw your forefathers as the (X)earliest fruit on the fig tree in its first season.But they came to (Y)Baal-peor and devoted themselves to (l)(Z)shame,And they became as (AA)detestable as that which they loved.
10 I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the firstripe in the fig tree at her first time: but they went to Baalpeor, and separated themselves unto that shame; and their abominations were according as they loved.
10 I discovered Israellike grapes in the wilderness.(W)I saw your fatherslike the first fruit of the fig tree in its first season.(X)But they went to Baal-peor,(Y)consecrated themselves to Shame,(a)(Z)and became detestable,(AA)like the thing they loved.
10 "I found Israel, as one finds grapes in the wilderness; Your ancestors seemed to me like the fruit gleaned from a fig tree's first harvest. When they went to Baal-peor, they devoted themselves to that filth, and they became loathsome, like what they loved.
10 I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness [an unexpected and refreshing delight];I saw your fathers (ancestors) as the first ripe fruit on the fig tree in its first season,But they came to Baal-peor and consecrated themselves to shamefulness [the worship of Baal],And [because of their spiritual and physical adultery] they became as detestable and loathsome as the thing they loved.
11 As for Ephraim, their (AB)glory will fly away like a bird—No birth, no pregnancy and no conception!
11 As for Ephraim, their glory shall fly away like a bird, from the birth, and from the womb, and from the conception.
11 The glory of Ephraim will fly away like a bird no birth, no pregnancy, not even a conception.
11 As for Ephraim, their glory will fly away like a bird;No birth, no pregnancy, and [because of their impurity] no conception.
12 Though they bring up their children,Yet I will bereave them (m)until not a man is left.Yes, (AC)woe to them indeed when I depart from them!
12 Though they bring up their children, yet will I bereave them, that there shall not be a man left: yea, woe also to them when I depart from them!
12 Even if they raise children,I will bereave them of each one.Yes, woe to them when I depart from them!(AD)
12 Even if they rear their children, I will, in turn, make them childless in fact, woe to them when I turn away from them!
12 Even though they bring up their children,Yet I will bereave them until not one is left.Indeed, woe (judgment is coming) to them when I look away and withdraw [My blessing] from them!
13 Ephraim, as I have seen,Is planted in a pleasant meadow like (AD)Tyre;But Ephraim will bring out his children for slaughter.
13 Ephraim, as I saw Tyrus, is planted in a pleasant place: but Ephraim shall bring forth his children to the murderer.
13 I have seen Ephraim like Tyre,(AE)planted in a meadow,so Ephraim will bring out his childrento the executioner.
13 Ephraim, as I see it, is like Tyre, planted in a comfortable place; Ephraim will bear children but they will be executed."
13 Ephraim, as I have seen,Is planted in a pleasant [and prosperous] meadow like Tyre;But Ephraim will bring out his children to the executioner [for slaughter].
14 Give them, O LORD: what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.
14 Give them, Lord—What should You give?Give them a womb that miscarriesand breasts that are dry!(AF)
14 Give them, LORD What will you give? You will give them a womb that miscarries and dry breasts.
14 Give them [the punishment they deserve], O Lord! What will You give?Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.
15 All their evil is at (AF)Gilgal;Indeed, I came to hate them there!Because of the (AG)wickedness of their deedsI will drive them out of My house!I will love them no more;All their princes are (AH)rebels.
15 All their wickedness is in Gilgal: for there I hated them: for the wickedness of their doings I will drive them out of mine house, I will love them no more: all their princes are revolters.
15 All their evil appears at Gilgal,(AG)for there I came to hate them.I will drive them from My housebecause of their evil, wicked actions.(AH)I will no longer love them;all their leaders are rebellious.(AI)
15 "All of their wickedness started in Gilgal, because I began to hate them there. Because of the wickedness of their behavior, I will drive them from my Temple. I will not love them anymore; all their leaders are rebels.
16 (AI)Ephraim is stricken, their root is dried up,They will bear (AJ)no fruit.Even though they bear children,I will slay the (AK)precious ones of their womb.
16 Ephraim is smitten, their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit: yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay even the beloved fruit of their womb.
16 Ephraim(AJ) is struck down;their roots are withered;they cannot bear fruit.(AK)Even if they bear children,I will kill the precious offspring of their wombs.(AL)
16 Ephraim is blighted; its roots shriveled. It can bear no fruit. Even if they bear children, I will kill their cherished offspring.
16 Ephraim is stricken, their root is dried up,They will bear no fruit.Even though they give birth,I will slay the precious children of their womb.
17 My God will cast them awayBecause they have (AL)not listened to Him;And they will be (AM)wanderers among the nations.
17 My God will cast them away, because they did not hearken unto him: and they shall be wanderers among the nations.
17 My God will reject thembecause they have not listened to Him;(AM)they will become wanderers among the nations.(AN)
17 "My God will reject them, because they did not obey him, and they will become wanderers among the nations."
17 My God will reject them and cast them awayBecause they did not listen to Him;And they will be wanderers (fugitives) among the nations.
