Ephraim Faces Punishment
1 Have no joy, O Israel, and do not be glad like the nations; for you have been untrue to your God; your desire has been for the loose woman's reward on every grain-floor.
1 Rejoice not, O Israel, for joy, as other people: for thou hast gone a whoring from thy God, thou hast loved a reward upon every cornfloor.
1 (A)Do not rejoice, O Israel, (a)with exultation like the (b)nations! For you have (B)played the harlot, (c)forsaking your God.You have loved harlots’ earnings on (d)every threshing floor.
1 Israel, do not rejoice jubilantly as the nations do,(A)for you have acted promiscuously,(B) leaving your God.You have loved the wages of a prostituteon every grain-threshing floor.(C)
1 "Don't celebrate, Israel, like other nations would rejoice, because you left your God by committing fornication, loving the profit you gained on all of the threshing floors.
2 The grain-floor and the place where the grapes are crushed will not give them food; there will be no new wine for them.
2 The floor and the winepress shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail in her.
2 Neither threshing floor nor winepress will sustain them, and the new wine will disappoint her.
3 They will have no resting-place in the Lord's land, but Ephraim will go back to Egypt, and they will take unclean food in Assyria.
3 They shall not dwell in the LORD'S land; but Ephraim shall return to Egypt, and they shall eat unclean things in Assyria.
3 They will not remain in (D)the Lord’s land,But Ephraim will return to (E)Egypt,And in (F)Assyria they will eat (G)unclean food.
3 They will not stay in the land of the Lord.Instead, Ephraim will return to Egypt,(E)and they will eat unclean food(F) in Assyria.(G)
3 They will not live in the LORD's land Ephraim will return to Egypt, and they will eat unclean food in Assyria.
4 They will give no wine offering to the Lord, they will not make offerings ready for him; their bread will be like the bread of those in sorrow; all who take it will be unclean, because their bread will be only for their desire, it will not come into the house of the Lord.
4 They shall not offer wine offerings to the LORD, neither shall they be pleasing unto him: their sacrifices shall be unto them as the bread of mourners; all that eat thereof shall be polluted: for their bread for their soul shall not come into the house of the LORD.
4 They will not pour out drink offerings of (H)wine to the Lord,(I)Their sacrifices will not please Him.Their bread will (f)be like (g)mourners’ bread; All who eat of it will be (J)defiled,For their bread will be for (h)themselves alone; It will not enter the house of the Lord.
4 They will not pour outtheir wine offerings to the Lord,(H)and their sacrifices will not please Him.Their food will be like the bread of mourners;all who eat it become defiled.(I)For their bread will be for their appetites alone;it will not enter the house of the Lord.
4 They won't present wine offerings to the LORD, nor will they please him. Their sacrifices will seem like food for mourners everyone who eats them will become unclean; none of them will enter the Temple of the LORD.
5 What will you do on the day of worship, and on the day of the feast of the Lord?
5 What will ye do in the solemn day, and in the day of the feast of the LORD?
5 (K)What will you do on the day of the appointed festivalAnd on the day of the (L)feast of the Lord?
5 "What will you do on the designated holiday, when the LORD's festival comes?
6 For see, they are going away into Assyria; Egypt will get them together, Memphis will be their last resting-place; their fair silver vessels will be covered over with field plants, and thorns will come up in their tents.
6 For, lo, they are gone because of destruction: Egypt shall gather them up, Memphis shall bury them: the pleasant places for their silver, nettles shall possess them: thorns shall be in their tabernacles.
6 For behold, they will go because of destruction;Egypt will gather them up, (M)Memphis will bury them.Weeds will take over their treasures of silver;(N)Thorns will be in their tents.
6 For even if they flee from devastation,Egypt will gather them, and Memphis will bury them.(L)Thistles will take possession of their precious silver;thorns will invade their tents.(M)
6 Look! They have gone away because of the destruction Egypt will gather them up, and Memphis will bury them. Weeds will overgrow their inheritance, and thorns will grow in their tents.
7 The days of punishment, the days of reward are come; Israel will be put to shame; the prophet is foolish, the man who has the spirit is off his head, because of your great sin.
7 The days of visitation are come, the days of recompence are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the spiritual man is mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity, and the great hatred.
7 The days of (O)punishment have come,The days of (P)retribution have come;(i)Let Israel know this! The prophet is a (Q)fool,The (j)inspired man is (R)demented,Because of the grossness of your (S)iniquity,And because your hostility is so great.
7 The days of punishment have come;(N)the days of retribution have come.(O)Let Israel recognize it!The prophet is a fool,(P)and the inspired man is insane,(Q)because of the magnitudeof your guilt and hostility.(R)
7 The time for your judgment has now come; payday is here and Israel knows it. The prophet is a fool, and the spiritual man is insane. Because of your great sin, the hatred against you is great.
8 There is great hate against the watchman of Ephraim, the people of my God; as for the prophet, there is a net in all his ways, and hate in the house of his God.
8 The watchman of Ephraim was with my God: but the prophet is a snare of a fowler in all his ways, and hatred in the house of his God.
8 Ephraim was a watchman with my God, a prophet;Yet the snare of a bird catcher is in all his ways,And there is only hostility in the house of his God.
8 Ephraim’s watchman is with my God.The prophet encounters a fowler’s snareon all his ways.(S)Hostility is in the house of his God!
8 While Ephraim stands watch with my God, the prophet has snares set that will trap his ways, and hostility lodges in the Temple of his God.
9 They have gone deep in evil as in the days of Gibeah; he will keep in mind their wrongdoing, he will give them punishment for their sins.
9 They have deeply corrupted themselves, as in the days of Gibeah: therefore he will remember their iniquity, he will visit their sins.
9 They have gone (T)deep (k)in depravityAs in the days of (U)Gibeah; He will (V)remember their iniquity,He will punish their sins.
9 They have deeply corrupted themselves(T)as in the days of Gibeah.(U)He will remember their guilt; He will punish their sins.(V)
9 They have corrupted themselves deeply, as did Gibeah in its day. Therefore God will remember their lawlessness, and he will pay them back for their sins.
Ephraim Bereaved Of Offspring
10 I made discovery of Israel as of grapes in the waste land; I saw your fathers as the first-fruits of the fig-tree in her early fruit time; but they came to Baal-peor, and made themselves holy to the thing of shame, and became disgusting like that to which they gave their love.
10 I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the firstripe in the fig tree at her first time: but they went to Baalpeor, and separated themselves unto that shame; and their abominations were according as they loved.
10 I found Israel like (W)grapes in the wilderness;I saw your forefathers as the (X)earliest fruit on the fig tree in its first season. But they came to (Y)Baal-peor and devoted themselves to (l)(Z)shame,And they became as (AA)detestable as that which they loved.
10 I discovered Israellike grapes in the wilderness.(W)I saw your fatherslike the first fruit of the fig tree in its first season.(X)But they went to Baal-peor,(Y)consecrated themselves to Shame,(a)(Z)and became detestable,(AA)like the thing they loved.
10 "I found Israel, as one finds grapes in the wilderness; Your ancestors seemed to me like the fruit gleaned from a fig tree's first harvest. When they went to Baal-peor, they devoted themselves to that filth, and they became loathsome, like what they loved.
11 As for Ephraim, their glory will go in flight like a bird: there will be no birth and no one with child and no giving of life.
11 As for Ephraim, their glory shall fly away like a bird, from the birth, and from the womb, and from the conception.
11 As for Ephraim, their (AB)glory will fly away like a bird—No birth, no pregnancy and no conception!
11 The glory of Ephraim will fly away like a bird no birth, no pregnancy, not even a conception.
12 Even though their children have come to growth I will take them away, so that not a man will be there; for their evil-doing will be complete and they will be put to shame because of it.
12 Though they bring up their children, yet will I bereave them, that there shall not be a man left: yea, woe also to them when I depart from them!
12 Though they bring up their children,Yet I will bereave them (m)until not a man is left.Yes, (AC)woe to them indeed when I depart from them!
12 Even if they raise children,I will bereave them of each one.Yes, woe to them when I depart from them!(AD)
12 Even if they rear their children, I will, in turn, make them childless in fact, woe to them when I turn away from them!
13 As I have seen a beast whose young have been taken from her, so Ephraim will give birth to children only for them to be put to death.
13 Ephraim, as I saw Tyrus, is planted in a pleasant place: but Ephraim shall bring forth his children to the murderer.
13 Ephraim, as I have seen,Is planted in a pleasant meadow like (AD)Tyre; But Ephraim will bring out his children for slaughter.
13 I have seen Ephraim like Tyre,(AE)planted in a meadow,so Ephraim will bring out his childrento the executioner.
13 Ephraim, as I see it, is like Tyre, planted in a comfortable place; Ephraim will bear children but they will be executed."
14 O Lord, what will you give them? Give them bodies which may not give birth and breasts without milk.
14 Give them, O LORD: what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.
14 Give them, Lord—What should You give?Give them a womb that miscarriesand breasts that are dry!(AF)
14 Give them, LORD What will you give? You will give them a womb that miscarries and dry breasts.
The Lord's Judgment On Israel
15 All their evil-doing is in Gilgal; there I had hate for them; because of their evil-doing I will send them out of my house; they will no longer be dear to me; all their rulers are uncontrolled.
15 All their wickedness is in Gilgal: for there I hated them: for the wickedness of their doings I will drive them out of mine house, I will love them no more: all their princes are revolters.
15 All their evil is at (AF)Gilgal;Indeed, I came to hate them there!Because of the (AG)wickedness of their deedsI will drive them out of My house!I will love them no more; All their princes are (AH)rebels.
15 All their evil appears at Gilgal,(AG)for there I came to hate them.I will drive them from My housebecause of their evil, wicked actions.(AH)I will no longer love them;all their leaders are rebellious.(AI)
15 "All of their wickedness started in Gilgal, because I began to hate them there. Because of the wickedness of their behavior, I will drive them from my Temple. I will not love them anymore; all their leaders are rebels.
16 The rod has come on Ephraim, their root is dry, let them have no fruit; even though they give birth, I will put to death the dearest fruit of their bodies.
16 Ephraim is smitten, their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit: yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay even the beloved fruit of their womb.
16 (AI)Ephraim is stricken, their root is dried up,They will bear (AJ)no fruit.Even though they bear children,I will slay the (AK)precious ones of their womb.
16 Ephraim(AJ) is struck down;their roots are withered;they cannot bear fruit.(AK)Even if they bear children,I will kill the precious offspring of their wombs.(AL)
16 Ephraim is blighted; its roots shriveled. It can bear no fruit. Even if they bear children, I will kill their cherished offspring.
17 My God will give them up because they did not give ear to him; they will be wandering among the nations.
17 My God will cast them away, because they did not hearken unto him: and they shall be wanderers among the nations.
17 My God will cast them awayBecause they have (AL)not listened to Him;And they will be (AM)wanderers among the nations.
17 My God will reject thembecause they have not listened to Him;(AM)they will become wanderers among the nations.(AN)
17 "My God will reject them, because they did not obey him, and they will become wanderers among the nations."
