1 But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.
1 But now this is what the LORD says, the one who created you, Jacob, the one who formed you, Israel: "Do not be afraid, because I've redeemed you. I've called you by name; you are mine.
1 But now [in spite of past judgments for Israel's sins], thus says the Lord, He Who created you, O Jacob, and He Who formed you, O Israel: Fear not, for I have redeemed you [ransomed you by paying a price instead of leaving you captives]; I have called you by your name; you are Mine.
2 “When you (G)pass through the waters, (H)I will be with you;And through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you (I)walk through the fire, you will not be scorched,Nor will the flame burn you.
2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
2 I will be with you(D)when you pass through the waters,(E)and when you pass through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you.You will not be scorchedwhen you walk through the fire,(F)and the flame will not burn you.
2 When you pass through the waters, I'll be with you; and through the rivers, they won't sweep over you. when you walk through fire you won't be scorched, and the flame won't set you ablaze.
2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned or scorched, nor will the flame kindle upon you.
3 For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee.
3 "I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Redeemer And I've given Egypt as your ransom, Cush and the people of Seba in exchange for you.
3 For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt [to the Babylonians] for your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba [a province of Ethiopia] in exchange [for your release].
4 Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life.
4 Since you're precious in my sight and honored, and because I love you, I'm giving up people in your place, and nations in exchange for your life."
4 Because you are precious in My sight and honored, and because I love you, I will give men in return for you and peoples in exchange for your life.
5 Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west;
5 "Don't be afraid, for I am with you; I'll bring your children from the east, and gather you from the west.
5 Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east [where they are dispersed] and gather you from the west.
6 I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth;
6 I'll say to the north, "Give them up'! and to the south, "Don't keep them back!' Bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the ends of the earth
6 I will say to the north, Give up! and to the south, Keep not back. Bring My sons from afar and My daughters from the ends of the earth -- "
7 Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.
7 everyone called by My nameand created for My glory.I have formed him; indeed, I have made him.”
7 everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.
7 Even everyone who is called by My name, whom I have created for My glory, whom I have formed, whom I have made.
8 Bring forth the blind people that have eyes, and the deaf that have ears.
8 "Bring out the people who are blind, yet still have eyes, who are deaf, yet still have ears!
8 Bring forth the blind people who have eyes and the deaf who have ears.
9 All the nations have (AA)gathered togetherSo that the peoples may be assembled.Who among them can (AB)declare thisAnd proclaim to us the former things?Let them present (AC)their witnesses (AD)that they may be justified,Or let them hear and say, “It is true.”
9 Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled: who among them can declare this, and shew us former things? let them bring forth their witnesses, that they may be justified: or let them hear, and say, It is truth.
9 All the nations are gathered together, and the peoples are assembled.(P)Who among them can declare this,(Q)and tell us the former things?Let them present their witnessesto vindicate themselves,so that people may hear and say, “It is true.”
9 Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the nations be assembled. "Who is there among them who can declare this, or announce the former things? Let them produce their witnesses to prove them right, and let them proclaim so people will say, "It's true.'
9 Let all the nations be gathered together and let the peoples be assembled. Who among [the idolaters] could predict this [that Cyrus would be the deliverer of Israel] and show us the former things? Let them bring their witnesses, that they may be justified, or let them hear and acknowledge, It is the truth.
10 “You are (AE)My witnesses,” declares the Lord,“And (AF)My servant whom I have chosen,So that you may know and believe MeAnd understand that (AG)I am He.(AH)Before Me there was no God formed,And there will be none after Me.
10 Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
10 “You are My witnesses”(R)—this is the Lord’s declaration—“and My servant whom I have chosen,(S)so that you may know and believe Meand understand that I am He.(T)No god was formed before Me,and there will be none after Me.(U)
10 "You are my witnesses," declares the LORD, "and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and trust me and understand that I am the One. Before me no God was formed, nor will there be one after me.
10 You are My witnesses, says the Lord, and My servant whom I have chosen, that you may know Me, believe Me and remain steadfast to Me, and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after Me.
11 I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.
11 I, yes I, am the LORD, and apart from me there is no savior.
11 I, even I, am the Lord, and besides Me there is no Savior.
12 I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, that I am God.
12 I've revealed and saved and proclaimed, when there was no foreign god among you and you are my witnesses," declares the LORD.
12 I have declared [the future] and have saved [the nation in times of danger], and I have shown [that I am God] -- "when there was no strange and alien god among you; therefore you are My witnesses, says the Lord, that I am God.
13 Yea, before the day was I am he; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who shall let it?
13 "I am God; also from ancient days I am the one. And there is no one who can deliver out of my hand; when I act, who can reverse it?"
13 Yes, from the time of the first existence of day and from this day forth I am He; and there is no one who can deliver out of My hand. I will work, and who can hinder or reverse it?
14 Thus says the Lord your (AP)Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel,“For your sake I have sent to Babylon,And will bring them all down as fugitives,(c)Even the (AQ)Chaldeans, into the (AR)ships (d)in which they rejoice.
14 Thus saith the LORD, your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; For your sake I have sent to Babylon, and have brought down all their nobles, and the Chaldeans, whose cry is in the ships.
14 This is what the Lord, your Redeemer,(Z) the Holy One of Israel(AA) says:Because of you, I will send to Babylonand bring all of them as fugitives,(c)even the Chaldeans(AB) in the ships in which they rejoice.(d)
14 This is what the LORD says, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: "For your sake I will send to Babylon, and bring them all down as fugitives. Now as for the Babylonians, their ringing cry will become lamentation.
14 Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: For your sake I have sent [one] to Babylon, and I will bring down all of them as fugitives, [with] all their nobles, even the Chaldeans, into the ships over which they rejoiced.
15 I am the LORD, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King.
15 I am Yahweh, your Holy One,the Creator of Israel, your King.
15 I am the LORD, your Holy One, Creator of Israel, and your King."
15 I am the Lord, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King.
16 Thus saith the LORD, which maketh a way in the sea, and a path in the mighty waters;
16 This is what the LORD says who makes a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters,
16 Thus says the Lord, Who makes a way through the sea and a path through the mighty waters,
17 Which bringeth forth the chariot and horse, the army and the power; they shall lie down together, they shall not rise: they are extinct, they are quenched as tow.
17 who brings out chariots and horsemen, and armies and warriors at the same time. They lay there, never to rise again, extinguished, snuffed out like a candle:
17 Who brings forth chariot and horse, army and mighty warrior. They lie down together, they cannot rise; they are extinguished, they are quenched like a lampwick:
18 Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.
18 "Don't remember the former things; don't dwell on things past.
18 Do not [earnestly] remember the former things; neither consider the things of old.
19 Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
19 Watch! I'm about to carry out something new! And now it's springing up don't you recognize it? I'm making a way in the wilderness and paths in the desert.
19 Behold, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs forth; do you not perceive and know it and will you not give heed to it? I will even make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
20 The beast of the field shall honour me, the dragons and the owls: because I give waters in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, my chosen.
20 Wild animals, jackals, and owls will honor me because I provide water in the desert and streams in the wilderness to give drink to my people, my chosen ones,
20 The beasts of the field honor Me, the jackals and the ostriches, because I give waters in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to My people, My chosen,
21 This people have I formed for myself; they shall shew forth my praise.
21 the people whom I formed for myself and so that they may speak my praise."
21 The people I formed for Myself, that they may set forth My praise [and they shall do it].
22 But thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob; but thou hast been weary of me, O Israel.
22 "And yet you didn't call upon me, Jacob; indeed, you are tired of me, Israel!
22 Yet you have not called upon Me [much less toiled for Me], O Jacob; but you have been weary of Me, O Israel!
23 Thou hast not brought me the small cattle of thy burnt offerings; neither hast thou honoured me with thy sacrifices. I have not caused thee to serve with an offering, nor wearied thee with incense.
23 You haven't brought me your sheep for a burnt offering, nor have you honored me with your sacrifices, nor have you made meal offerings for me yet I have not tired you about incense!
23 You have not brought Me your sheep and goats for burnt offerings, or honored Me with your sacrifices. I have not required you to serve with an offering or treated you as a slave by demanding tribute or wearied you with offering incense.
24 “You have bought Me not (f)(BJ)sweet cane with money,Nor have you (g)filled Me with the fat of your sacrifices;Rather you have burdened Me with your sins,You have (BK)wearied Me with your iniquities.
24 Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices: but thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast wearied me with thine iniquities.
24 You haven't bought me sweet cane with money, nor have you satisfied me with the fat of your sacrifices. You have only burdened me with your sins and made me tired with your iniquities.
24 You have not bought Me sweet cane with money, or satiated Me with the fat of your sacrifices. But you have only burdened Me with your sins; you have wearied Me with your iniquities.
25 I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.
25 "I, I am the one who blots out your transgression for my own sake, and I'll remember your sins no more.
25 I, even I, am He Who blots out and cancels your transgressions, for My own sake, and I will not remember your sins.
26 Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified.
26 Recount the brief! Let's argue the matter together; Present your case, so that you may be proved right.
26 Put Me in remembrance [remind Me of your merits]; let us plead and argue together. Set forth your case, that you may be justified (proved right).
27 Thy first father hath sinned, and thy teachers have transgressed against me.
27 Your first ancestor sinned, and your mediators rebelled against me.
27 Your first father [Jacob, in particular] sinned, and your teachers [the priests and the prophets -- "your mediators] transgressed against Me.
28 Therefore I have profaned the princes of the sanctuary, and have given Jacob to the curse, and Israel to reproaches.
28 So I'll disgrace the leaders of the Temple, and I'll consign Jacob to total destruction and Israel to contempt.
28 And so I will profane the chief ones of the sanctuary and will deliver Jacob to the curse (the ban, a solemn anathema or excommunication) and [will subject] Israel to reproaches and reviling.
