Four Types Of Calamity

1 Then spake the LORD unto me, and said, "Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet have I no heart to this people. Drive them away, that they may go out of my sight.

1 Then said the LORD unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth.

1 Then the Lord said to me, “Even (A)though (B)Moses and (C)Samuel were to (D)stand before Me, My (a)heart would not be (b)with this people; (E)send them away from My presence and let them go!

1 Then the Lord said to me: “Even if(A) Moses and(B) Samuel should(C) stand before Me,(D) My compassions would not reach out to these people. Send them from My presence, and let them go.

1 Then the LORD told me, "Even if Moses and Samuel were standing before me, I wouldn't be favorably disposed toward this people. Send them out of my presence! Let them go!

2 And if they say unto thee, 'Whither shall we go?' Then tell them, 'The LORD giveth you this answer: Some unto death, some to the sword, some to hunger, some into captivity.'

2 And it shall come to pass, if they say unto thee, Whither shall we go forth? then thou shalt tell them, Thus saith the LORD; Such as are for death, to death; and such as are for the sword, to the sword; and such as are for the famine, to the famine; and such as are for the captivity, to the captivity.

2 And it shall be that when they say to you, ‘Where should we go?’ then you are to tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord:“Those destined (F)for death, to death; And those destined for the sword, to the sword; And those destined for famine, to famine; And those destined for captivity, to captivity.”’

2 If they ask you, ‘Where will we go?’ you must tell them: This is what the Lord says:Those destined for death,(E) to death;those destined for the sword, to the sword. Those destined for famine, to famine;those destined for captivity, to captivity.

2 "When they say to you, "Where can we go?', say to them, "This is what the LORD says: "Those destined for death, to death will go; those destined for the sword, to the sword will go; and those destined for captivity, to captivity will go.

3 For I will bring four plagues upon them, sayeth the LORD. The sword shall strangle them, the dogs shall devour them, the fowls of the air, and beasts of the earth shall eat them up, and destroy them.

3 And I will appoint over them four kinds, saith the LORD: the sword to slay, and the dogs to tear, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the earth, to devour and destroy.

3 I will (G)appoint over them four kinds of doom,” declares the Lord: “the sword to slay, the (H)dogs to drag off, and the (I)birds of the sky and the beasts of the earth to devour and destroy.

3 “I will ordain four kinds(a) of judgment for them”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“the sword to kill, the dogs to drag away,(F) and the birds of the sky and the wild animals of the land(G) to devour and destroy.

3 "I'll appoint four kinds of judgment for them," declares the LORD: "the sword to kill, the dogs to drag off, the birds of the sky to devour, and the animals of the land to destroy.

4 I will scatter them about also in all kingdoms and lands to be plagued, because of Manasseh the son of Hezekiah king of Judah, for the things that he did in Jerusalem.

4 And I will cause them to be removed into all kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasseh the son of Hezekiah king of Judah, for that which he did in Jerusalem.

4 I will (J)make them an object of horror among all the kingdoms of the earth because of (K)Manasseh, the son of Hezekiah, the king of Judah, for what he did in Jerusalem.

4 I will make them a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth because of Manasseh(H) son of Hezekiah, the king of Judah, for what he did in Jerusalem.

4 I'll make them a horrifying sight to all the kingdoms of the earth because of what Hezekiah's son Manasseh, king of Judah, did in Jerusalem.

5 Who shall then have pity upon thee, O Jerusalem? Who shall be sorry for thee? Or who shall make intercession, to obtain peace for thee,

5 For who shall have pity upon thee, O Jerusalem? or who shall bemoan thee? or who shall go aside to ask how thou doest?

5 “Indeed, who will have (L)pity on you, O Jerusalem,Or who will (M)mourn for you,Or who will turn aside to ask about your welfare?

5 Who will have pity on you, Jerusalem?(I)Who will show sympathy toward you?(J)Who will turn asideto ask about your welfare?

5 "Who will have pity on you, Jerusalem, and who will grieve for you? Who will go out of his way to ask about your welfare?

6 seeing thou goest from me and turnest backward? Sayeth the LORD: Therefore I will stretch out mine hand against thee, to destroy thee, and I will not be entreated.

6 Thou hast forsaken me, saith the LORD, thou art gone backward: therefore will I stretch out my hand against thee, and destroy thee; I am weary with repenting.

6 “You who have (N)forsaken Me,” declares the Lord,“You keep (O)going backward. So I will (P)stretch out My hand against you and destroy you;I am (Q)tired of relenting!

6 You have left Me.This is the Lord’s declaration. You have turned your back,so I have stretched out My hand against youand destroyed you.I am tired of showing compassion.

6 You have deserted me," declares the LORD. "You keep going backward. I'll reach out my hand and destroy you. I'm tired of showing compassion.

7 I will scatter thee abroad with the fan on every side of the land: I will waste my people and destroy them, for they have had no lust to turn from their own ways.

7 And I will fan them with a fan in the gates of the land; I will bereave them of children, I will destroy my people, since they return not from their ways.

7 “I will (R)winnow them with a winnowing forkAt the gates of the land;I will (S)bereave them of children, I will destroy My people;(T)They did not (c)repent of their ways.

7 I scattered them with a winnowing forkat the gates of the land.I made them childless; I destroyed My people. They would not turn from their ways.(K)

7 I'll winnow them with a winnowing fork in the gates of the land. I'll make them childless. I'll destroy my people, for they didn't change their ways.

8 I will make their widows more in number than the sands of the sea. Upon the mothers of their children, I shall bring a destroyer in the noonday. Suddenly and unawares, shall I send a fear upon their cities.

8 Their widows are increased to me above the sand of the seas: I have brought upon them against the mother of the young men a spoiler at noonday: I have caused him to fall upon it suddenly, and terrors upon the city.

8 “Their (U)widows will be more numerous before MeThan the sand of the seas;I will bring against them, against the mother of a young man,A (V)destroyer at noonday;I will suddenly bring down on herAnguish and dismay.

8 I made their widows more numerousthan the sand of the seas.(L)I brought a destroyer at noonagainst the mother of young men.I suddenly released on heragitation and terrors.

8 I'll make their widows more numerous than the sand of the sea. At noontime I'll send a destroyer against the mother of a young man. I'll cause terror and anguish to come to her unexpectedly.

9 She that hath born seven children, shall have none; her heart shall be full of sorrow. The Sun shall fail her in the clear day, when she shall be confounded and faint for very heaviness. As for those that remain, I will deliver them unto the sword of their enemies, sayeth the LORD."

9 She that hath borne seven languisheth: she hath given up the ghost; her sun is gone down while it was yet day: she hath been ashamed and confounded: and the residue of them will I deliver to the sword before their enemies, saith the LORD.

9 “She who (W)bore seven sons pines away;(d)Her breathing is labored. Her (X)sun has set while it was yet day;She has been (Y)shamed and humiliated. So I will (Z)give over their survivors to the swordBefore their enemies,” declares the Lord.

9 The mother of seven grew faint;(M)she breathed her last breath. Her sun set while it was still day;she was ashamed and humiliated. The rest of them I will give over to the swordin the presence of their enemies.”This is the Lord’s declaration.

9 "The woman who gave birth to seven will grow faint, her life will expire. Her sun will set while it's still day. She will be disgraced and humiliated. I'll kill the rest of them with swords in the presence of their enemies," declares the LORD.

Jeremiah's Lament And Yahweh's Response

10 O mother, alas that ever thou didst bear me, an enemy and hated of the whole land: Though I never lent nor received upon usury, yet all men speak evil upon me.

10 Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent on usury, nor men have lent to me on usury; yet every one of them doth curse me.

10 (AA)Woe to me, my mother, that you have borne meAs a (AB)man of strife and a man of contention to all the land!I have not (AC)lent, nor have men lent money to me,Yet everyone curses me.

10 Woe is me, my mother, that you gave birth to me,(N)a man who incites dispute and conflictin all the land.I did not lend or borrow, yet everyone curses me.(O)

10 How terrible for me, my mother, that you gave birth to me, a man of strife and contention for the whole land! I've neither lent nor borrowed, yet everyone curses me.

11 And the LORD answered me, "Lead not I thee then unto good? Come not I to thee, when thou art in trouble? And help thee, when thine enemy oppresseth thee?

11 The LORD said, Verily it shall be well with thy remnant; verily I will cause the enemy to entreat thee well in the time of evil and in the time of affliction.

11 The Lord said, “Surely I will (AD)set you free for purposes of good;Surely I will cause the (AE)enemy to make supplication to youIn a time of disaster and a time of distress.

11 The Lord said:I will certainly set you free and care for you.(b)I will certainly intercede for youin a time of trouble,in your time of distress, with the enemy.

11 The LORD said, "Have I not set you free for a good purpose? Have I not intervened for you with your enemies in times of trouble and times of distress?

12 Doth one iron hurt another, or one metal that cometh from the North, another?

12 Shall iron break the northern iron and the steel?

12 “Can anyone smash iron,(AF)Iron from the north, or bronze?

12 Can anyone smash iron, iron from the north, or bronze?

12 "Can anyone break iron iron from the north or bronze?

13 As for your riches and treasure, I will give them out into a prey; not for any money, but because of all your sins, that ye have done in all your coasts.

13 Thy substance and thy treasures will I give to the spoil without price, and that for all thy sins, even in all thy borders.

13 “Your (AG)wealth and your treasuresI will give for booty (AH)without cost,Even for all your sinsAnd within all your borders.

13 I will give up your wealthand your treasures as plunder, without cost,(P) for all your sinsin all your borders.

13 "I'll give away your wealth and your treasures as plunder, for free, because of all your sins throughout your territory.

14 And I will bring you with your enemies into a land that ye know not: for the fire that is kindled in my indignation, shall burn you up."

14 And I will make thee to pass with thine enemies into a land which thou knowest not: for a fire is kindled in mine anger, which shall burn upon you.

14 “Then I will cause your enemies to bring (e)itInto a (AI)land you do not know; For a (AJ)fire has been kindled in My anger,It will burn upon you.”

14 Then I will make you serve your enemies(c)in a land you do not know, for My anger will kindle a firethat will burn against you.(Q)

14 I'll make you serve your enemies in a land you don't know, for my anger has started a fire that will burn against you."

Jeremiah's Prayer For Vengeance

15 "O LORD," said I then, "thou knowest all things. Therefore remember me, and visit me, deliver me from my persecutors: Receive not my cause in thy long wrath; yet thou knowest, that for thy sake I suffer rebuke.

15 O LORD, thou knowest: remember me, and visit me, and revenge me of my persecutors; take me not away in thy longsuffering: know that for thy sake I have suffered rebuke.

15 (AK)You who know, O Lord,Remember me, take notice of me,And (AL)take vengeance for me on my persecutors.Do not, in view of Your patience, take me away;Know that (AM)for Your sake I endure reproach.

15 You know,(R) Lord;remember me and take note of me.Avenge me against my persecutors.(S)In Your patience,(d) don’t take me away.Know that I suffer disgrace for Your honor.(T)

15 You are aware LORD, remember me, pay attention to me, and vindicate me in front of those who pursue me. You are patient don't take me away. Know that I suffer insult because of you!

16 When I had found thy words, I ate them up greedily: they have made my heart joyful and glad, for I call upon thy name, O LORD God of Hosts.

16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.

16 Your words were found and I (AN)ate them,And Your (AO)words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart; For I have been (AP)called by Your name,O Lord God of hosts.

16 Your words were found, and I ate them.(U)Your words became a delight to meand the joy of my heart, for I am called by Your name,(V)Yahweh God of Hosts.

16 Your words were found, and I consumed them. Your words were joy and my hearts delight, because I bear your name, LORD God of the Heavenly Armies.

17 I dwell not among the council of scorners, neither is my delight therein: but I dwell only in the fear of thy hand, for thou hast filled me with bitterness.

17 I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand: for thou hast filled me with indignation.

17 I (AQ)did not sit in the circle of merrymakers,Nor did I exult.Because of Your hand upon me I sat (AR)alone,For You (AS)filled me with indignation.

17 I never sat with the band of revelers, and I did not celebrate with them.Because Your hand was on me, I sat alone,(W)for You filled me with indignation.

17 I didn't sit in the company of those who have fun, and I didn't rejoice. Because of your hand on me, I sat alone, for you filled me with indignation.

18 Shall my heaviness endure forever? Are my plagues then so great, that they may never be healed? Wilt thou be as a water that faileth, and cannot continue?"

18 Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuseth to be healed? wilt thou be altogether unto me as a liar, and as waters that fail?

18 Why has my pain been perpetualAnd my (AT)wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Will You indeed be to me (AU)like a deceptive streamWith water that is unreliable?

18 Why has my pain become unending,my wound incurable,(X)refusing to be healed? You truly have become like a mirage to me—water that is not reliable.

18 Why is my pain unending and my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? You are like a deceptive brook, whose waters cannot be depended on.

Jeremiah Told To Repent

19 Upon these words, thus said the LORD unto me, "If thou wilt turn again, I shall set thee in my service: and if thou wilt take out the thing that is precious from the vile, thou shalt be even as mine own mouth. They shall convert unto thee, but turn not thou unto them:

19 Therefore thus saith the LORD, If thou return, then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee; but return not thou unto them.

19 Therefore, thus says the Lord,(AV)If you return, then I will restore you—(AW)Before Me you will stand; And (AX)if you extract the precious from the worthless,You will become (f)My spokesman. They for their part may turn to you,But as for you, you must not turn to them.

19 Therefore, this is what the Lord says:If you return, I will restore you;you will stand in My presence. And if you speak noble words, rather than worthless ones, you will be My spokesman.(Y)It is they who must return to you;you must not return to them.

19 Therefore, this is what the LORD says: "If you repent, I'll take you back and you will stand before me. If you speak what is worthwhile, instead of what is worthless, then you will be my spokesman. People will turn to you, but you aren't to turn to them.

20 and so shall I make thee a strong wall of steel against this people. They shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail. For I myself will be with thee, to help thee, and deliver thee, sayeth the LORD.

20 And I will make thee unto this people a fenced brasen wall: and they shall fight against thee, but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith the LORD.

20 “Then I will (AY)make you to this peopleA fortified wall of bronze; And though they fight against you,They will not prevail over you;For (AZ)I am with you to save youAnd deliver you,” declares the Lord.

20 Then I will make you a fortified wall of bronzeto this people. They will fight against youbut will not overcome you,for I am with youto save you and deliver you.(Z)This is the Lord’s declaration.

20 I'll make you a fortified wall of bronze to this people. They'll fight against you, but they won't prevail against you, for I am with you to save you and deliver you,"

21 And I will rid thee out of the hands of the wicked, and deliver thee out of the hand of Tyrants."

21 And I will deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem thee out of the hand of the terrible.

21 “So I will (BA)deliver you from the hand of the wicked,And I will (BB)redeem you from the (g)grasp of the violent.”

21 I will deliver you from the power of evil peopleand redeem you from the control of the ruthless.

21 So I'll deliver you from the hand of the wicked, and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless."
