The One Who Trusts In Humankind Contrasted With The One Who Trusts In Yahweh

5 The Lord says, "I will put a curse on people who trust in mere human beings, who depend on mere flesh and blood for their strength, and whose hearts have turned away from the Lord.

5 Thus says the Lord,(M)Cursed is the man who trusts in mankindAnd makes (N)flesh his (c)strength,And whose heart turns away from the Lord.

5 Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.

5 This is what the Lord says:The man who trusts in mankind,(F)who makes human flesh his strength(G)and turns his heart from the Lord is cursed.

5 This is what the LORD says: "Cursed is the person who trusts in mankind, who makes flesh his strength, and whose heart turns away from the LORD.

6 They will be like a shrub in the desert. They will not experience good things even when they happen. It will be as though they were growing in the desert, in a salt land where no one can live.

6 “For he will be like a (O)bush in the desertAnd will not see when prosperity comes,But will live in stony wastes in the wilderness,A (P)land of salt (d)without inhabitant.

6 For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited.

6 He will be like a juniper in the Arabah;(H)he cannot see when good comesbut dwells in the parched places in the wilderness,in a salt land where no one lives.(I)

6 He will be like a bush in the desert, and he won't see when good comes. He will dwell in parched places in the wilderness, a land of salt, without inhabitants.

7 My blessing is on those people who trust in me, who put their confidence in me.

7 (Q)Blessed is the man who trusts in the LordAnd whose (R)trust is the Lord.

7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.

7 The man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence indeed is the Lord, is blessed.(J)

7 Blessed is the person who trusts in the LORD, making the LORD his trust.

8 They will be like a tree planted near a stream whose roots spread out toward the water. It has nothing to fear when the heat comes. Its leaves are always green. It has no need to be concerned in a year of drought. It does not stop bearing fruit.

8 “For he will be like a (S)tree planted by the water,That extends its roots by a streamAnd will not fear when the heat comes; But its leaves will be green,And it will not be anxious in a year of (T)droughtNor cease to yield fruit.

8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

8 He will be like a tree planted by water:(K)it sends its roots out toward a stream,it doesn’t fear when heat comes, and its foliage remains green. It will not worry in a year of droughtor cease producing fruit.

8 He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by a stream. He won't fear when the heat comes, and his leaves will be green. In a year of drought he won't be concerned, nor will he stop producing fruit."

The Deceitful Heart

9 The human mind is more deceitful than anything else. It is incurably bad. Who can understand it?

9 “The (U)heart is more (V)deceitful than all elseAnd is desperately (W)sick;Who can understand it?

9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

9 The heart is more deceitful than anything else, and incurable—who can understand it?(L)

9 "The heart is more deceitful than anything. It is incurable who can know it?

10 I, the Lord, probe into people's minds. I examine people's hearts. I deal with each person according to how he has behaved. I give them what they deserve based on what they have done.

10 “I, the Lord, (X)search the heart,I test the (e)mind,Even (Y)to give to each man according to his ways,According to the (f)results of his deeds.

10 I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

10 I, Yahweh, examine the mind,I test the heart(c)(M)to give to each according to his way, according to what his actions deserve.(N)

10 I am the LORD who searches the heart, who tests the inner depths to give to each person according to what he deserves, according to the fruit of his deeds.

11 The person who gathers wealth by unjust means is like the partridge that broods over eggs but does not hatch them. Before his life is half over he will lose his ill-gotten gains. At the end of his life it will be clear he was a fool."

11 “As a partridge that hatches eggs which it has not laid,So is he who (Z)makes a fortune, but unjustly; In the midst of his days it will forsake him,And in (g)the end he will be a (AA)fool.”

11 As the partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.

11 He who makes a fortune unjustlyis like a partridge that hatches eggs it didn’t lay.In the middle of his dayshis riches will abandon him,so in the end he will be a fool.(O)

11 As a partridge gathers together eggs that it didn't lay, so is a person who amasses wealth unjustly. In the middle of his life it will leave him, and in the end he will prove to be a fool."

The Fountain Of Living Water

12 Then I said, "Lord, from the very beginning you have been seated on your glorious throne on high. You are the place where we can find refuge.

12 (AB)A glorious throne on high from the beginningIs the place of our sanctuary.

12 A glorious high throne from the beginning is the place of our sanctuary.

12 A throne of glory(P)on high(Q) from the beginningis the place of our sanctuary.(R)

12 A glorious throne exalted from the beginning is the place of our sanctuary.

13 You are the one in whom Israel may find hope. All who leave you will suffer shame. Those who turn away from you will be consigned to the nether world. For they have rejected you, the Lord, the fountain of life.

13 O Lord, the (AC)hope of Israel,All who (AD)forsake You will be put to shame. Those who turn (h)away on earth will be (AE)written down,Because they have forsaken the fountain of living water, even the Lord.

13 O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.

13 Lord, the hope of Israel,(S)all who abandon Youwill be put to shame. All who turn away from Mewill be written in the dirt, for they have abandonedthe Lord, the fountain of living water.(T)

13 LORD, you are the hope of Israel; all who forsake you will be put to shame. Those who turn aside from you will be written in the dust, because they have forsaken the LORD, the spring of living water.

Jeremiah's Plea

14 Lord, grant me relief from my suffering so that I may have some relief. Rescue me from those who persecute me so that I may be rescued.

14 (AF)Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed;(AG)Save me and I will be saved,For You are my (AH)praise.

14 Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.

14 Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed;save me, and I will be saved, for You are my praise.(U)

14 Heal me, LORD, and I'll be healed; deliver me, and I'll be delivered, because you are my praise.

15 Listen to what they are saying to me. They are saying, "Where are the things the Lord threatens us with? Come on! Let's see them happen!"

15 Look, they keep (AI)saying to me,“Where is the word of the Lord?Let it come now!”

15 Behold, they say unto me, Where is the word of the LORD? let it come now.

15 Hear how they keep challenging me,(V)“Where is the word of the Lord?Let it come!”

15 Look, they're saying to me, "Where is the message from the LORD? Let it come about!"

16 But I have not pestered you to bring disaster. I have not desired the time of irreparable devastation. You know that. You are fully aware of every word that I have spoken.

16 But as for me, I have not hurried away from being a shepherd after You,Nor have I longed for the woeful day;(AJ)You Yourself know that the utterance of my lipsWas in Your presence.

16 As for me, I have not hastened from being a pastor to follow thee: neither have I desired the woeful day; thou knowest: that which came out of my lips was right before thee.

16 But I have not run away from being Your shepherd, and I have not longed for the fatal day.You know my words were spoken in Your presence.

16 I haven't run away from being your shepherd, and I haven't longed for the day of sickness. You know what comes out from my lips, it's open before you.

17 Do not cause me dismay! You are my source of safety in times of trouble.

17 Do not be a (AK)terror to me;You are my (AL)refuge in the day of disaster.

17 Be not a terror unto me: thou art my hope in the day of evil.

17 Don’t become a terror to me.You are my refuge(W) in the day of disaster.

17 Don't be a terror to me. You are my refuge in a day of trouble.

18 May those who persecute me be disgraced. Do not let me be disgraced. May they be dismayed. Do not let me be dismayed. Bring days of disaster on them. Bring on them the destruction they deserve."

18 Let those who persecute me be (AM)put to shame, but as for me, (AN)let me not be put to shame;Let them be dismayed, but let me not be dismayed.(AO)Bring on them a day of disaster,And crush them with twofold destruction!

18 Let them be confounded that persecute me, but let not me be confounded: let them be dismayed, but let not me be dismayed: bring upon them the day of evil, and destroy them with double destruction.

18 Let my persecutors be put to shame,(X)but don’t let me be put to shame.Let them be terrified, but don’t let me be terrified.Bring on them the day of disaster;(Y)shatter them with total(d) destruction.

18 Let those who pursue me be put to shame, but don't put me to shame. Let them be terrified, but don't let me be terrified. Bring the day of judgment on them, and destroy them with double destruction!

The Sabbath Day

19 The Lord told me, "Go and stand in the People's Gate through which the kings of Judah enter and leave the city. Then go and stand in all the other gates of the city of Jerusalem.

19 Thus the Lord said to me, “Go and stand in the (i)public gate, through which the kings of Judah come in and go out, as well as in all the gates of Jerusalem;

19 Thus said the LORD unto me; Go and stand in the gate of the children of the people, whereby the kings of Judah come in, and by the which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem;

19 This is what the Lord said to me, “Go and stand at the People’s Gate, through which the kings of Judah enter and leave, as well as at all the gates of Jerusalem.

19 The LORD told me, "Go, stand in the gate of the people, where the kings of Judah come in and go out, and in the other gates of Jerusalem as well.

20 As you stand in those places announce, 'Listen, all you people who pass through these gates. Listen, all you kings of Judah, all you people of Judah and all you citizens of Jerusalem. Listen to what the Lord says.

20 and say to them, ‘(AP)Listen to the word of the Lord, (AQ)kings of Judah, and all Judah and all inhabitants of Jerusalem who come in through these gates:

20 And say unto them, Hear ye the word of the LORD, ye kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, that enter in by these gates:

20 Announce to them: Hear the word of the Lord, kings of Judah, all Judah, and all the residents of Jerusalem who enter through these gates.

20 Say to them, "Kings of Judah, all Judah, and all the residents of Jerusalem entering these gates, hear this message from the LORD.

21 The Lord says, 'Be very careful if you value your lives! Do not carry any loads in through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day.

21 Thus says the Lord, “(AR)Take heed for yourselves, and (AS)do not carry any load on the sabbath day or bring anything in through the gates of Jerusalem.

21 Thus saith the LORD; Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem;

21 This is what the Lord says: Watch yourselves; do not pick up a load and bring it in through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day.(Z)

21 This is what the LORD says: "Be careful! On the Sabbath day, don't carry any load or bring anything through the gates of Jerusalem.

22 Do not carry any loads out of your houses or do any work on the Sabbath day. But observe the Sabbath day as a day set apart to the Lord, as I commanded your ancestors.

22 You shall not bring a load out of your houses on the sabbath day (AT)nor do any work, but keep the sabbath day holy, as I (AU)commanded your (j)forefathers.

22 Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.

22 You must not carry a load out of your houses on the Sabbath day or do any work,(AA) but you must consecrate the Sabbath day, just as I commanded your ancestors.(AB)

22 Don't bring any load out of your houses on the Sabbath day, nor are you to do any work. You are to consecrate the Sabbath day, just as I commanded your ancestors.

23 Your ancestors, however, did not listen to me or pay any attention to me. They stubbornly refused to pay attention or to respond to any discipline.'

23 Yet they (AV)did not listen or incline their ears, but (AW)stiffened their necks in order not to listen or take correction.

23 But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction.

23 They wouldn’t listen or pay attention but became obstinate,(AC) not listening or accepting discipline.

23 But they didn't listen, nor did they pay attention. They were determined not to listen and not to accept instruction.

24 The Lord says, 'You must make sure to obey me. You must not bring any loads through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day. You must set the Sabbath day apart to me. You must not do any work on that day.

24 “But it will come about, if you (AX)listen attentively to Me,” declares the Lord, “to (AY)bring no load in through the gates of this city on the sabbath day, (AZ)but to keep the sabbath day holy by doing no work on it,

24 And it shall come to pass, if ye diligently hearken unto me, saith the LORD, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the sabbath day, but hallow the sabbath day, to do no work therein;

24 “However, if you listen to Me, says the Lord, and do not bring loads through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day and consecrate the Sabbath day and do no work on it,

24 If you listen to me carefully," declares the LORD, "and don't bring a load through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, and you consecrate the Sabbath day and don't do any work on it,

25 If you do this, then the kings and princes who follow in David's succession and ride in chariots or on horses will continue to enter through these gates, as well as their officials and the people of Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem. This city will always be filled with people.

25 (BA)then there will come in through the gates of this city kings and princes (BB)sitting on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they and their princes, the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and this (BC)city will be inhabited forever.

25 Then shall there enter into the gates of this city kings and princes sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they, and their princes, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and this city shall remain for ever.

25 kings and princes will enter through the gates of this city. They will sit on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses(AD) with their officials, the men of Judah, and the residents of Jerusalem. This city will be inhabited forever.

25 then kings and princes, sitting on the throne of David will come through the gates of this city. They, their princes, the men of Judah, and the residents of Jerusalem will come riding in chariots and on horses, and this city will be inhabited forever.

26 Then people will come here from the towns in Judah, from the villages surrounding Jerusalem, from the territory of Benjamin, from the western foothills, from the southern hill country, and from the southern part of Judah. They will come bringing offerings to the temple of the Lord: burnt offerings, sacrifices, grain offerings, and incense along with their thank offerings.

26 They will come in from the (BD)cities of Judah and from the environs of Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin, from the (BE)lowland, from the hill country and from the (BF)Negev, bringing burnt offerings, sacrifices, grain offerings and incense, and bringing sacrifices of thanksgiving to the house of the Lord.

26 And they shall come from the cities of Judah, and from the places about Jerusalem, and from the land of Benjamin, and from the plain, and from the mountains, and from the south, bringing burnt offerings, and sacrifices, and meat offerings, and incense, and bringing sacrifices of praise, unto the house of the LORD.

26 Then people will come from the cities of Judah and from the area around Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin and from the Judean foothills, from the hill country and from the Negev(AE) bringing burnt offerings and sacrifice, grain offerings and frankincense, and thank offerings to the house of the Lord.

26 They'll come from the cities of Judah, from the places around Jerusalem, from the territory of Benjamin, from the Shephelah, from the hill country, and from the Negev, bringing burnt offerings, sacrifices, grain offerings, and incense, and bringing thanksgiving offerings to the LORD's Temple.

27 But you must obey me and set the Sabbath day apart to me. You must not carry any loads in through the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. If you disobey, I will set the gates of Jerusalem on fire. It will burn down all the fortified dwellings in Jerusalem and no one will be able to put it out.'"

27 But (BG)if you do not listen to Me to keep the sabbath day holy by not carrying a load and coming in through the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day, then (BH)I will kindle a fire in its gates and it will (BI)devour the palaces of Jerusalem and (BJ)not be quenched.”’”

27 But if ye will not hearken unto me to hallow the sabbath day, and not to bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day; then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.

27 If you do not listen to Me to consecrate the Sabbath day by not carrying a load while entering the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, I will set fire to its gates,(AF) and it will consume the citadels(AG) of Jerusalem(AH) and not be extinguished.”(AI)

27 But if you don't listen to me, to consecrate the Sabbath day and not carry any load as you enter the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I'll start a fire in its gates. It will consume the palaces of Jerusalem and won't be extinguished."'"
