1 Concerning the Ammonites, thus saith the LORD; Hath Israel no sons? hath he no heir? why then doth their king inherit Gad, and his people dwell in his cities?
1 To the people of Ammon: This is what the LORD says: "Does Israel have no sons? Does he have no heir? Why then has Milcom taken possession of Gad, and his people settled in its towns?
2 “Therefore behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord,“That I will cause a (b)(B)trumpet blast of war to be heardAgainst (C)Rabbah of the sons of Ammon; And it will become a desolate heap,And her (D)towns will be set on fire. Then Israel will take (E)possession of his possessors,”Says the Lord.
2 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites; and it shall be a desolate heap, and her daughters shall be burned with fire: then shall Israel be heir unto them that were his heirs, saith the LORD.
2 Therefore look, the days are coming—this is the Lord’s declaration—when I will make the shout of battle(C) heardagainst Rabbah of the Ammonites. It will become a desolate mound, and its villages will be burned down.Israel will dispossess their dispossessors, says the Lord.
2 Therefore, look, the time is coming," declares the LORD, "when I'll cause a battle cry to be heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites. It will become a desolate mound, and its towns will be burned with fire. Israel will take possession of those who possessed him," says the LORD.
2 “Therefore behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord,“When I will cause an alarm of war to be heardAgainst Rabbah of the Ammonites; And it [along with the high ground on which it stands] will become a desolate heap,And its villages will be set on fire. Then will Israel take possession of his possessors,”Says the Lord.(A)
3 “Wail, O (F)Heshbon, for (G)Ai has been destroyed!Cry out, O daughters of Rabbah,(H)Gird yourselves with sackcloth and lament,And rush back and forth inside the walls; For (c)Malcam will (I)go into exileTogether with his priests and his princes.
3 Howl, O Heshbon, for Ai is spoiled: cry, ye daughters of Rabbah, gird you with sackcloth; lament, and run to and fro by the hedges; for their king shall go into captivity, and his priests and his princes together.
3 Wail, Heshbon,(D) for Ai is devastated;cry out, daughters of Rabbah!Clothe yourselves with sackcloth,(E) and lament;run back and forth within your walls,(c)because Milcom will go into exiletogether with his priests and officials.(F)
3 "Wail, Heshbon, because Ai is destroyed. Cry out, daughters of Rabbah, put on sackcloth and lament. Run back and forth inside the walls, for Milcom is going into exile along with his priests and his princes.
4 Wherefore gloriest thou in the valleys, thy flowing valley, O backsliding daughter? that trusted in her treasures, saying, Who shall come unto me?
4 Why do you boast in your valleys? Your valley is flowing away, faithless daughter, who trusted in her treasures, saying, "Who will come against me?'
4 “Why do you boast of your valleys?Your valley is flowing away,[O Ammon] rebellious and faithless daughterWho trusts in her treasures, saying,‘Who will come against me?’
5 “Behold, I am going to bring (N)terror upon you,”Declares the Lord (d)God of hosts,“From all directions around you;And each of you will be (O)driven out (e)headlong,With no one to gather the (P)fugitives together.
5 Behold, I will bring a fear upon thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts, from all those that be about thee; and ye shall be driven out every man right forth; and none shall gather up him that wandereth.
5 Look, I'm bringing terror on you from all around you," declares the Lord GOD of the Heavenly Armies. "You will be driven out, fleeing recklessly, and there will be no one to gather the fugitives.
5 “Behold, I am going to bring terror on you,”Says the Lord God of hosts,“From all who are around you;And each of you will be driven out headlong,And there will be no one to gather the fugitives together.
6 And afterward I will bring again the captivity of the children of Ammon, saith the LORD.
6 But afterwards I'll restore the fortunes of the people of Ammon," declares the LORD.
7 Concerning Edom, thus saith the LORD of hosts; Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished?
7 To Edom: This is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies says: "Is there no longer wisdom in Teman? Has counsel perished among the prudent? Is their wisdom gone?
8 Flee ye, turn back, dwell deep, O inhabitants of Dedan; for I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, the time that I will visit him.
8 Flee, turn around! Go to a remote place to stay, residents of Dedan! For I'll bring Esau's disaster on him at the time when I punish him.
9 If grapegatherers come to thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? if thieves by night, they will destroy till they have enough.
9 If the grape harvesters came to you, would they not leave gleanings? If thieves came at night, they would destroy only until they had enough.
9 “If grape gatherers came to you,Would they not leave some ungleaned grapes [on the vines]?If thieves came by night,Would they not destroy [only] what is enough [for them]?
10 “But I have (X)stripped Esau bare,I have uncovered his hiding placesSo that he will not be able to conceal himself; His (j)offspring has been destroyed along with his (k)relativesAnd his neighbors, and (Y)he is no more.
10 But I have made Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: his seed is spoiled, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and he is not.
10 But I will strip Esau bare;I will uncover his secret places.(N)He will try to hide himself, but he will be unable. His descendants will be destroyedalong with his relatives and neighbors. He will exist no longer.
10 But I'll strip Esau bare. I'll uncover his hiding places so he cannot conceal himself. His offspring, his relatives, and his neighbors will be destroyed, and he will no longer exist.
10 “But I have stripped Esau (Edom) bare;I have uncovered his hiding placesAnd he cannot hide himself. His descendants have been destroyed along with his brothers (relatives) and his neighbors; And he is no more.
11 Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me.
11 Leave your orphans. I'll keep them alive. Let your widows trust in me."
11 “Leave your orphans behind; I will [do what is needed to] keep them alive. And let [those who are] your widows trust and confide in Me.”
12 For thus says the Lord, “Behold, those (m)who were not sentenced to drink the (AB)cup will certainly drink it, and are you the one who will be (AC)completely acquitted? You will not be acquitted, but you will certainly drink it.
12 For thus saith the LORD; Behold, they whose judgment was not to drink of the cup have assuredly drunken; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink of it.
12 “For this is what the Lord says: If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, can you possibly remain unpunished? You will not remain unpunished, for you must drink it too.
12 For this is what the LORD says: "Look, those who don't deserve to drink the cup will surely drink it, and will you actually go unpunished? You won't go unpunished! You will certainly drink it!
13 For I have sworn by myself, saith the LORD, that Bozrah shall become a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all the cities thereof shall be perpetual wastes.
13 Indeed, I've sworn by myself," declares the LORD, "that Bozrah will become an object of horror and scorn, a waste, and an object of ridicule. All her towns will become perpetual ruins."
14 I have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent unto the heathen, saying, Gather ye together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle.
14 I have heard a message from the Lord;a messenger has been sent among the nations:Assemble yourselves to come against her.Rise up for war!
14 I've heard a message from the LORD, and a messenger has been sent among the nations: "Gather together and come up against her, and rise up to fight.
14 I have heard a report from the Lord,And a messenger has been sent to the nations, saying,“Gather together and come against her,And rise up for the battle.”
15 “For behold, I have made you small among the nations,Despised among men.
15 For, lo, I will make thee small among the heathen, and despised among men.
15 Look, I will certainly make you insignificant among the nations, despised among humanity.
15 Indeed, I'll make you the least of the nations, despised among men.
16 “As for the terror of you,The arrogance of your heart has deceived you,O you who live in the clefts of (n)the (AJ)rock,Who occupy the height of the hill.Though you make your nest as (AK)high as an eagle’s,I will (AL)bring you down from there,” declares the Lord.
16 Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the LORD.
16 As to the terror you cause,(h)your presumptuous heart has deceived you.You who live in the clefts of the rock,(i)you who occupy the mountain summit, though you elevate your nest like the eagle, even from there I will bring you down. This is the Lord’s declaration.(Q)
16 The terror you cause and the pride of your heart have deceived you. You who live in hidden places in the rocks, who hold on to the heights of the hill, although you make your nest high like the eagle, I'll bring you down from there," declares the LORD.
17 Also Edom shall be a desolation: every one that goeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss at all the plagues thereof.
17 "Edom will become an object of horror. Everyone who passes by her will be horrified and will scoff because of all her wounds.
17 “Edom will become an object of horror; everyone who goes by it will be astonished and shall hiss [scornfully] at all its plagues and disasters.
18 As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it.
18 Just like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbors," says the LORD, "no one will live there. No human being will reside in it.
18 As [it was] in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah with their neighboring cities,” says the Lord, “no man will live there, nor will a son of man dwell in it.
19 (AQ)Behold, one will come up like a lion from the (o)(AR)thickets of the Jordan against (p)a perennially watered pasture; for in an instant I will make him run away from it, and whoever is (AS)chosen I shall appoint over it. For who is (AT)like Me, and who will summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd (AU)who can stand against Me?”
19 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan against the habitation of the strong: but I will suddenly make him run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?
19 “Look, it will be like a lion coming from the thickets(j) of the Jordan to the watered grazing land. Indeed, I will chase Edom away from her land in a flash. I will appoint whoever is chosen for her. For who is like Me? Who will summon Me?(U) Who is the shepherd who can stand against Me?”
19 Look, like a lion comes up from the thicket of the Jordan to a pasture that grows year round, so I'll drive them away from her in an instant, and I'll appoint whomever is chosen over her. Indeed, who is like me? Who gives me counsel? Who is the shepherd who will stand against me?"
19 See, one will come like a lion from the thicket of the Jordan against the enduring habitation [of Edom] and its watered pastures; for in an instant I will make (k)him (Edom) run from his land. I will appoint over him the one whom I choose. For who is like Me, and who will summon Me [into court] and prosecute Me [for this]? Who is the [earthly] shepherd who can stand [defiantly] before Me?”
20 Therefore hear the (AV)plan of the Lord which He has planned against Edom, and His purposes which He has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: surely they will drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; surely He will make their (q)pasture (AW)desolate because of them.
20 Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Edom; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitations desolate with them.
20 Therefore, hear the plans that the Lord has drawn up against Edom and the strategies He has devised against the people of Teman:(V) The flock’s little lambs will certainly be dragged away,(W) and their grazing land will be made desolate because of them.
20 Therefore, hear the plan that the LORD has made against Edom, and the strategy that he devised against the inhabitants of Teman. Surely he will drag the little ones of the flock away. Surely their pasture will be desolate because of them.
20 Therefore hear the plan of the Lord which He has devised against Edom, and [hear] what He has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: surely they will be dragged away, even the little ones of the flock; surely He will make their dwelling place desolate because of them.
21 The earth is moved at the noise of their fall, at the cry the noise thereof was heard in the Red sea.
21 The earth will quake at the sound of their fall. A cry it's her voice is heard at the Reed Sea.
21 The earth has quaked at the noise of their downfall. There is an outcry! The sound of its noise has been heard at the Red Sea.
22 Behold, (s)He will mount up and (AY)swoop like an eagle and spread out His wings (t)against Bozrah; and the (AZ)hearts of the mighty men of Edom in that day will be like the heart of a woman in labor.
22 Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his wings over Bozrah: and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of Edom be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.
22 Look! It will be like an eagle soaring upward, then swooping down and spreading its wings over Bozrah. In that day the hearts of Edom’s warriors will be like the heart of a woman with contractions.(Y)
22 Look, he will rise up and fly swiftly like an eagle. He will spread his wings against Bozrah, and on that day the hearts of the warriors of Edom will be like the heart of a woman in labor.
23 Concerning Damascus. Hamath is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil tidings: they are fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet.
23 To Damascus: "Hamath and Arpad will be humiliated. Their courage melts because they have heard bad news. There is anxiety like the sea that cannot be calmed.
23 Concerning Damascus [in Syria].“Hamath and Arpad are perplexed and shamed,For they have heard bad news; They are disheartened;Troubled and anxious like a [storm-tossed] seaWhich cannot be calmed.
24 Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth herself to flee, and fear hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in travail.
24 Damascus has become weak;she has turned to run;panic has gripped her.Distress and labor pains have seized herlike a woman in labor.
24 Damascus will become weak. She will turn to flee, but panic will seize her. Distress and anguish will take hold of her like that of a woman giving birth.
24 “Damascus has become helpless; She has turned away to flee,Terror (panic) has seized her;Anguish and distress have gripped herLike a woman in childbirth.
25 How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy!
25 Why is the famous city, the joyful town, not abandoned?
25 “Why has the renowned city not been deserted,The city of My joy!
26 Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD of hosts.
26 Therefore her young men will fall in her streets, and all her soldiers will be silenced on that day," declares the LORD of the Heavenly Armies.
27 And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces of Benhadad.
27 "I'll kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it will devour the strongholds of Ben-hadad."
28 Concerning Kedar, and concerning the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon shall smite, thus saith the LORD; Arise ye, go up to Kedar, and spoil the men of the east.
28 To Kedar and the kingdoms of Hazor that King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon destroyed: This is what the LORD says: "Arise, go against Kedar! Plunder the people of the east!
29 “They will take away their tents and their flocks; They will carry off for themselvesTheir tent (BM)curtains, all their goods and their (BN)camels,And they will call out to one another, ‘(BO)Terror on every side!’
29 Their tents and their flocks shall they take away: they shall take to themselves their curtains, and all their vessels, and their camels; and they shall cry unto them, Fear is on every side.
29 Take their tents and their flocks, their tent curtains and all their goods. Take their camels away from them. Cry out against them, "Terror is all around!'
30 Flee, get you far off, dwell deep, O ye inhabitants of Hazor, saith the LORD; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath taken counsel against you, and hath conceived a purpose against you.
30 Run! Escape quickly! Lie low, residents of Hazor—this is the Lord’s declaration—for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylonhas drawn up a plan against you;he has devised a strategy against you.
30 Flee! Run away quickly! Go to a remote place to stay, residents of Hazor," declares the LORD. "For King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon has formed a plan and devised a strategy against them.
30 “Flee, run far away! Dwell in the depths [of the desert],O inhabitants of Hazor,” says the Lord,“For Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has planned a course of action against youAnd devised a scheme against you.
31 Arise, get you up unto the wealthy nation, that dwelleth without care, saith the LORD, which have neither gates nor bars, which dwell alone.
31 "Arise, go up against a nation at ease, living securely," declares the LORD, "without gates or bars, living alone.
31 “Arise [Nebuchadnezzar], go up against a nation which is at ease,Which lives securely,” says the Lord,“A nation which has neither gates nor bars; They dwell apart and alone.
32 “Their camels will become plunder,And their many cattle for booty,And I will (BT)scatter to all the winds those who (BU)cut the corners of their hair; And I will bring their disaster from every side,” declares the Lord.
32 And their camels shall be a booty, and the multitude of their cattle a spoil: and I will scatter into all winds them that are in the utmost corners; and I will bring their calamity from all sides thereof, saith the LORD.
32 Their camels will become plunder, and their massive herds of cattle will become spoil.(AI)I will scatter them to the wind in every direction, those who shave their temples;I will bring calamity on them across all their borders. This is the Lord’s declaration.
32 Their camels will become booty, their many herds will become spoil. I'll scatter to the winds those who shave the corners of their beards, and I'll bring disaster on them from every side," declares the LORD.
33 And Hazor shall be a dwelling for dragons, and a desolation for ever: there shall no man abide there, nor any son of man dwell in it.
33 "Hazor will become a dwelling place for jackals, a perpetual wasteland. No one will live there; no human being will reside in it."
33 “Hazor will become a haunt and dwelling place of jackals,A desolation forever; No one will live there,Nor will a son of man reside in it.”
34 The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet against Elam in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying,
34 This is what came as a message from the LORD to Jeremiah the prophet about Elam at the beginning of the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah:
35 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their might.
35 This is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies says: "Look, I'm going to break the bow of Elam, the finest of their troops.
35 “Thus says the Lord of hosts,‘Behold (listen carefully), I am going to break the bow of Elam,The finest [weapon] of their strength.
36 And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come.
36 I will bring the four winds against Elamfrom the four corners of the heavens, and I will scatter them to all these winds. There will not be a nationto which Elam’s banished ones will not go.
36 I'll bring the four winds against Elam from the four corners of the heavens, and I'll scatter them to all these winds. There will be no nation to which the exiles from Elam won't go.
36 ‘And I will bring upon Elam the four windsFrom the four corners of heaven; And I will scatter them toward all those winds,And there will be no nationTo which the outcasts of Elam will not go.
37 ‘So I will (z)shatter Elam before their enemiesAnd before those who seek their lives; And I will (CB)bring calamity upon them,Even My (CC)fierce anger,’ declares the Lord,‘And I will (CD)send out the sword after themUntil I have consumed them.
37 For I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger, saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them:
37 I will devastate Elam before their enemies, before those who want to take their lives.I will bring disaster on them,My burning anger. This is the Lord’s declaration.I will send the sword after them(AN)until I finish them off.
37 I'll terrify Elam before their enemies and before those who seek to kill them. I'll bring on them disaster and become fiercely angry at them," declares the LORD. "I'll send the sword after them, until I've made an end of them.
37 ‘So I will cause Elam to be shattered (dismayed) before their enemiesAnd before those who seek their lives; And I will bring disaster on them,Even My fierce anger,’ says the Lord.‘And I will send the sword after themUntil I have consumed them.
38 And I will set my throne in Elam, and will destroy from thence the king and the princes, saith the LORD.
38 I will set My throne in Elam, and I will destroy the king and officials from there. This is the Lord’s declaration.
38 I'll put my throne in Elam, and destroy the king and the officials there," declares the LORD.
39 But it shall come to pass in the latter days, that I will bring again the captivity of Elam, saith the LORD.
39 "But in the latter days I'll restore the fortunes of Elam," declares the LORD.
39 ‘But it will be in the last days (the end of days)That I will reverse the captivity and restore the fortunes of Elam,’”Says the Lord.
