Job's Fifth Speech

11 Then Job answered,

11 Then Job answered and said,

11 Then Job answered:

11 In response, Job said:

11 Then Job answered,

22 "I have heard many such things; Sorry comforters are you all.

22 I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all.

22 I have heard many things like these. You are all miserable comforters.

22 "I've heard many things like this. What miserable comforters you all are!

22 I have heard many such things; wearisome and miserable comforters are you all!

33 "Is there no limit to windy words? Or what plagues you that you answer?

33 Shall vain words have an end? or what emboldeneth thee that thou answerest?

33 Is there [no] end to your empty words? What provokes you that you continue testifying?

33 Will windy words like yours never end? What is upsetting you that you keep on arguing?

33 Will your futile words of wind have no end? Or what makes you so bold to answer [me like this]?

44 "I too could speak like you, If I were in your place. I could compose words against you And shake my head at you.

44 I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head at you.

44 If you were in my place I could also talk like you. I could string words together against you and shake my head at you, [but I wouldn't].

44 "I could also talk like you if only you were in my place! Then I would put together an argument against you. I would shake my head at you

44 I also could speak as you do, if you were in my stead; I could join words together against you and shake my head at you.

55 "I could strengthen you with my mouth, And the solace of my lips could lessen your pain.

55 But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should asswage your grief.

55 I would encourage you with my mouth, and the consolation from my lips would bring relief.

55 and encourage you with what I have to say; my words of comfort would lessen your pain.

55 [But] I would strengthen and encourage you with [the words of] my mouth, and the consolation of my lips would soothe your suffering.

66 "If I speak, my pain is not lessened, And if I hold back, what has left me?

66 Though I speak, my grief is not asswaged: and though I forbear, what am I eased?

66 Even if I speak, my suffering is not relieved, and if I hold back, what have I lost?

66 "But if I speak, my pain isn't assuaged; if I refrain from speaking, what do I have to lose?"

66 If I speak [to you miserable comforters], my sorrow is not soothed or lessened; and if I refrain [from speaking], in what way am I eased? [I hardly know whether to answer you or be silent.]

77 "But now He has exhausted me; You have laid waste all my company.

77 But now he hath made me weary: thou hast made desolate all my company.

77 Surely He has now exhausted me. You have devastated my entire family.

77 "God has certainly worn me out; you devastated my entire world.

77 But now [God] has taken away my strength. You [O Lord] have made desolate all my family and associates.

88 "You have shriveled me up, It has become a witness; And my leanness rises up against me, It testifies to my face.

88 And thou hast filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness against me: and my leanness rising up in me beareth witness to my face.

88 You have shriveled me up-it has become a witness; My frailty rises up against me and testifies to my face.

88 You've arrested me, making me testify against myself! My leanness rises up to attack me, accusing me to my face.

88 You have laid firm hold on me and have shriveled me up, which is a witness against me; and my leanness [and wretched state of body] are further evidence [against me]; [they] testify to my face.

Job Describes What God Has Done To Him

99 "His anger has torn me and hunted me down, He has gnashed at me with His teeth; My adversary glares at me.

99 He teareth me in his wrath, who hateth me: he gnasheth upon me with his teeth; mine enemy sharpeneth his eyes upon me.

99 His anger tears [at me], and He harasses me. He gnashes His teeth at me. My enemy pierces me with His eyes.

99 His anger tears me in his persistent resentment against me; he gnashes his teeth at me. My adversary glares at me.

99 [ My adversary Satan] has torn [me] in his wrath and hated and persecuted me; he has gnashed upon me with his teeth; my adversary sharpens his eyes against me.

1010 "They have gaped at me with their mouth, They have slapped me on the cheek with contempt; They have massed themselves against me.

1010 They have gaped upon me with their mouth; they have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully; they have gathered themselves together against me.

1010 They open their mouths against me and strike my cheeks with contempt; they join themselves together against me.

1010 People gaped at me with mouths wide open; they slap me in their scorn and gather together against me.

1010 [The forces of evil] have gaped at me with their mouths; they have struck me upon the cheek insolently; they massed themselves together and conspired unanimously against me.

1111 "God hands me over to ruffians And tosses me into the hands of the wicked.

1111 God hath delivered me to the ungodly, and turned me over into the hands of the wicked.

1111 God hands me over to unjust men; He throws me into the hands of the wicked.

1111 God has delivered me over to the ungodly, throwing me into the control of the wicked.

1111 God has delivered me to the ungodly (to the evil one) and cast me [headlong] into the hands of the wicked (Satan's host).

Everything Was Going Well

1212 "I was at ease, but He shattered me, And He has grasped me by the neck and shaken me to pieces; He has also set me up as His target.

1212 I was at ease, but he hath broken me asunder: he hath also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark.

1212 I was at ease, but He shattered me; He seized [me] by the scruff of the neck and smashed me to pieces. He set me up as His target;

1212 "He tore me apart when I was at ease; grabbing me by my neck, he shook me to pieces then he really made me his target.

1212 I was living at ease, but [Satan] crushed me and broke me apart; yes, he seized me by the neck and dashed me in pieces; then he set me up for his target.

1313 "His arrows surround me Without mercy He splits my kidneys open; He pours out my gall on the ground.

1313 His archers compass me round about, he cleaveth my reins asunder, and doth not spare; he poureth out my gall upon the ground.

1313 His archers surround me. He pierces my kidneys without mercy and pours my bile on the ground.

1313 His archers surround me, slashing open my kidneys without pity; he pours out my gall on the ground.

1313 [Satan's] arrows whiz around me. He slashes open my vitals and does not spare; he pours out my gall on the ground.

1414 "He breaks through me with breach after breach; He runs at me like a warrior.

1414 He breaketh me with breach upon breach, he runneth upon me like a giant.

1414 He breaks through my defenses again and again; He charges at me like a warrior.

1414 Attack follows attack as he breaks through my defenses! He runs over me like a mighty warrior.

1414 [Satan] stabs me, making breach after breach and attacking again and again; he runs at me like a giant and irresistible warrior.

1515 "I have sewed sackcloth over my skin And thrust my horn in the dust.

1515 I have sewed sackcloth upon my skin, and defiled my horn in the dust.

1515 I have sewn sackcloth over my skin; I have buried my strength in the dust.

1515 "I've even sewn sackcloth directly to my skin; I've buried my strength in the dust.

1515 I have sewed sackcloth over my skin [as a sign of mourning] and have defiled my horn (my insignia of strength) in the dust.

1616 "My face is flushed from weeping, And deep darkness is on my eyelids,

1616 My face is foul with weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death;

1616 My face has grown red with weeping, and the shadow of death covers my eyes,

1616 My face is red from my tears, and dark shadows encircle my eyelids,

1616 My face is red and swollen with weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death [my eyes are dimmed],

1717 Although there is no violence in my hands, And my prayer is pure.

1717 Not for any injustice in mine hands: also my prayer is pure.

1717 although my hands are free from violence and my prayer is pure.

1717 even though violence is not my intention, and my prayer is pure."

1717 Although there is no guilt or violence in my hands and my prayer is pure.

Job Appeals His Case To Heaven

1818 "O earth, do not cover my blood, And let there be no resting place for my cry.

1818 O earth, cover not thou my blood, and let my cry have no place.

1818 Earth, do not cover my blood; may my cry for help find no resting place.

1818 "Listen, earth! Don't cover my blood, for my outcry has no place to rest.

1818 O earth, cover not my blood, and let my cry have no resting-place [where it will cease being heard].

1919 "Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven, And my advocate is on high.

1919 Also now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my record is on high.

1919 Even now my witness is in heaven, and my advocate is in the heights!

1919 Even now, behold! I have a witness in heaven, my Advocate is on high.

1919 Even now, behold, my Witness is in heaven, and He who vouches for me is on high.

2020 "My friends are my scoffers; My eye weeps to God.

2020 My friends scorn me: but mine eye poureth out tears unto God.

2020 My friends scoff at me as I weep before God.

2020 My friends mock me, while my eyes overflow with tears to God,

2020 My friends scorn me, but my eye pours out tears to God.

2121 "O that a man might plead with God As a man with his neighbor!

2121 O that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleadeth for his neighbour!

2121 I wish that someone might arbitrate between a man and God just as a man [pleads] for his friend.

2121 crying for him to arbitrate between this man and God; as a human being does with his fellow neighbor.

2121 Oh, that there might be one who would plead for a man with God and that he would maintain his right with Him, as a son of man pleads with or for his neighbor!

2222 "For when a few years are past, I shall go the way of no return.

2222 When a few years are come, then I shall go the way whence I shall not return.

2222 For [only] a few years will pass before I go the way of no return.

2222 For when only a few years have elapsed, I'll start down a path from which I'll never return."

2222 For when a few years are come, I shall go the way from which I shall not return.
