Bildad's Second Speech

1 And Bildad the Shuhite answereth and saith: --

1 Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,

1 Then Bildad the Shuhite (a)responded,

1 Then Bildad the Shuhite(A) replied:

1 Bildad from Shuah replied, saying:

2 When do ye set an end to words? Consider ye, and afterwards do we speak.

2 How long will it be ere ye make an end of words? mark, and afterwards we will speak.

2 “How long will you hunt for words?Show understanding and then we can talk.

2 How long until you stop talking?Show some sense, and then we can talk.

2 "When are you going to stop your word hunt? Think first, and then we can talk.

3 Wherefore have we been reckoned as cattle? We have been defiled in your eyes!

3 Wherefore are we counted as beasts, and reputed vile in your sight?

3 “Why are we (A)regarded as beasts,As stupid in your eyes?

3 Why are we regarded as cattle,as stupid in your sight?

3 Why do you think we're like dumb animals? Do you think we're stupid?

4 (He is tearing himself in his anger.) For thy sake is earth forsaken? And removed is a rock from its place?

4 He teareth himself in his anger: shall the earth be forsaken for thee? and shall the rock be removed out of his place?

4 “O (b)you who tear yourself in your anger—For your sake is the earth to be abandoned,Or the rock to be moved from its place?

4 You who tear yourself in anger(a)should the earth be abandoned on your account,or a rock be removed from its place?

4 You're tearing yourself to pieces in your anger. Will the land be abandoned because of you, or the rock be moved from its place?"

What A Wicked Person Can Expect From Life

5 Also, the light of the wicked is extinguished. And there doth not shine a spark of his fire.

5 Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine.

5 “Indeed, the (B)light of the wicked goes out,And the (c)flame of his fire gives no light.

5 Yes, the light(B) of the wicked(C) is extinguished;the flame of his fire does not glow.

5 "Indeed, the light of the wicked is extinguished; the flame from his fire doesn't shine.

6 The light hath been dark in his tent, And his lamp over him is extinguished.

6 The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his candle shall be put out with him.

6 “The light in his tent is (C)darkened,And his lamp goes out above him.

6 The light in his tent grows dark,(D)and the lamp beside him is put out.

6 Light in his tent is dark, and his lamp goes out above him.

7 Straitened are the steps of his strength, And cast him down doth his own counsel.

7 The steps of his strength shall be straitened, and his own counsel shall cast him down.

7 “His (d)vigorous stride is shortened,And his (D)own scheme brings him down.

7 His powerful stride is shortened, and his own schemes trip him up.(E)

7 His strong steps are restricted, and his own advice trips him up.

8 For he is sent into a net by his own feet, And on a snare he doth walk habitually.

8 For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walketh upon a snare.

8 “For he is (E)thrown into the net by his own feet,And he steps on the webbing.

8 For his own feet lead him into a net,and he strays into its mesh.

8 "For he has stumbled into a net with his own feet; he walked right into the network!

9 Seize on the heel doth a gin, Prevail over him do the designing.

9 The gin shall take him by the heel, and the robber shall prevail against him.

9 “A snare seizes him by the heel,And a trap snaps shut on him.

9 A trap catches him by the heel;a noose seizes him.

9 The trap seizes him by the heel; a snare tightens its hold on him.

10 Hidden in the earth is his cord, And his trap on the path.

10 The snare is laid for him in the ground, and a trap for him in the way.

10 “A noose for him is hidden in the ground,And a trap for him on the path.

10 A rope lies hidden for him on the ground, and a snare waits for him along the path.

10 A rope lies hidden in the dirt; a trap lies waiting for him where he is walking."

11 Round about terrified him have terrors, And they have scattered him -- at his feet.

11 Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and shall drive him to his feet.

11 “All around (F)terrors frighten him,And (G)harry him at every step.

11 Terrors frighten him on every side(F)and harass him at every step.

11 "He is petrified by terror that surrounds him on all sides; they chase at his heels.

12 Hungry is his sorrow, And calamity is ready at his side.

12 His strength shall be hungerbitten, and destruction shall be ready at his side.

12 “His strength is (H)famished,And calamity is ready at his side.

12 His strength is depleted;disaster lies ready for him to stumble.(b)

12 He is starved for strength; and is ripe for a fall.

13 It consumeth the parts of his skin, Consume his parts doth death's first-born.

13 It shall devour the strength of his skin: even the firstborn of death shall devour his strength.

13 (e)His skin is devoured by disease,The firstborn of death (I)devours his (f)limbs.

13 Parts of his skin are eaten away;death’s firstborn consumes his limbs.

13 Something gnaws on his skin; a deadly disease consumes his limbs.

14 Drawn from his tent is his confidence, And it causeth him to step to the king of terrors.

14 His confidence shall be rooted out of his tabernacle, and it shall bring him to the king of terrors.

14 “He is (J)torn from (g)the security of his tent,And (h)they march him before the king of (K)terrors.

14 He is ripped from the security of his tentand marched away to the king of terrors.

14 Torn from the security of his home, he is brought before the king of terrors.

15 It dwelleth in his tent -- out of his provender, Scattered over his habitation is sulphur.

15 It shall dwell in his tabernacle, because it is none of his: brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation.

15 (i)There dwells in his tent nothing of his;(L)Brimstone is scattered on his habitation.

15 Nothing he owned remains in his tent.Burning sulfur(G) is scattered over his home.

15 "There's nothing in his tent that belongs to him; sulfur is scattered all over his dwelling place.

16 From beneath his roots are dried up, And from above cut off is his crop.

16 His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branch be cut off.

16 “His (M)roots are dried below,And his (N)branch is cut off above.

16 His roots below dry up,and his branches above wither away.(H)

16 His roots wither underneath, while his branches above are being cut off.

17 His memorial hath perished from the land, And he hath no name on the street.

17 His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street.

17 (O)Memory of him perishes from the earth,And he has no name abroad.

17 All memory(I) of him perishes from the earth;he has no name anywhere.(c)

17 No one remembers him anywhere in the land; no one names streets in his honor.

18 They thrust him from light unto darkness, And from the habitable earth cast him out.

18 He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.

18 (j)He is driven from light (P)into darkness,And (Q)chased from the inhabited world.

18 He is driven from light to darknessand chased from the inhabited world.

18 He is driven away from light to darkness, made to wander the landscape.

19 He hath no continuator, Nor successor among his people, And none is remaining in his dwellings.

19 He shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings.

19 “He has no (R)offspring or posterity among his people,Nor any survivor where he sojourned.

19 He has no children or descendants among his people,no survivor where he used to live.(J)

19 He has no children or descendants within his own people; and no survivors where he once lived.

20 At this day westerns have been astonished And easterns have taken fright.

20 They that come after him shall be astonied at his day, as they that went before were affrighted.

20 “Those (k)in the west are appalled at (S)his (l)fate,And those (m)in the east are seized with horror.

20 Those in the west are appalled(K) at his fate, while those in the east tremble in horror.

20 People who live west of him are appalled at his fate; those who live east of him are seized with terror.

21 Only these are tabernacles of the perverse, And this the place God hath not known.

21 Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knoweth not God.

21 “Surely such are the (T)dwellings of the wicked,And this is the place of him who does not know God.”

21 Indeed, such is the dwelling of the unjust man,and this is the place of the one who does not know God.(L)

21 Indeed, the residences of the wicked are like this; and so are the homes of those who don't know God."
