Jonah's Prayer

1 Then prayed Jonah, unto Yahweh, his God, - out of the belly of the fish;

1 (a)Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God (A)from the stomach of the fish,

1 Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly,

1 Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from inside(a) the fish:(A)

1 Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from inside the sea creature.

2 and said - I cried - out of my distress - unto Yahweh, and he answered me, - Out of the belly of hades, called I, Thou didst hear my voice.

2 and he said,“I (B)called out of my distress to the Lord,And He answered me.I cried for help from the (b)depth of (C)Sheol; You heard my voice.

2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.

2 I called to the Lord in my distress,(B)and He answered me.I cried out for help in the belly of Sheol;(C)You heard my voice.(D)

2 He said: "I called out to the LORD from the midst of affliction directed at me, and he answered me. From the depths of death I cried out for help; and you heard my cry.

3 For thou hast cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and, a flood, enveloped me, - All thy breakers and thy rolling waves, over me, passed.

3 “For You had (D)cast me into the deep,Into the heart of the seas,And the current (c)engulfed me.All Your (E)breakers and billows passed over me.

3 For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.

3 You threw me into the depths,(E)into the heart of the seas,(F)and the current(b) overcame me.All Your breakers and Your billows swept over me.(G)

3 You cast me into the deep into the heart of the sea. Flood waters engulfed me. All your breakers and your waves swirled over me.

4 And, I, said, I am driven out from before thine eyes, - Yet will I again have regard unto thy holy temple:

4 “So I said, ‘I have been (F)expelled from (d)Your sight.Nevertheless I will look again (G)toward Your holy temple.’

4 Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.

4 But I said: I have been banished(H)from Your sight,(I)yet I will look once more(c)toward Your holy temple.(J)

4 So I told myself, "I have been driven away from you. How will I again gaze on your holy Temple?'

5 The waters, encompassed me, to the peril of my life, The roaring deep, enveloped me, - The sea-weed, was wrapped about my head:

5 (H)Water encompassed me to the (e)point of death. The great (I)deep (f)engulfed me,Weeds were wrapped around my head.

5 The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.

5 The waters engulfed me up to the neck;(d)(K)the watery depths overcame me;seaweed was wrapped around my head.(L)

5 Flood waters encompassed me, the deep surrounded me while seaweed wrapped around my head.

6 To the roots of the mountains, went I down, As for the earth, her bars, were about me, age-abidingly, - Then didst thou bring up - out of the pit - my life, O Yahweh my God.

6 “I (J)descended to the roots of the mountains. The earth with its (K)bars was around me forever,But You have (L)brought up my life from (g)the pit, O Lord my God.

6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.

6 I sank to the foundations of the mountains;(M)the earth with its prison bars closed behind me forever!(N)But You raised my life(O) from the Pit, Lord my God!(P)

6 I sank to the roots of the mountains; the earth's prison bars closed around me forever. Yet you resurrect the dead from the Pit, LORD my God!

7 When my soul, darkened itself over me, Yahweh, I remembered, - and my prayer, came in unto thee, unto thy holy temple.

7 “While (h)I was (M)fainting away,I (N)remembered the Lord,And my (O)prayer came to You,Into (P)Your holy temple.

7 When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.

7 As my life was fading away,(Q)I remembered Yahweh.(R)My prayer came to You,(S)to Your holy temple.(T)

7 "As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD; and my prayer came to you in your holy Temple.

8 They who take heed to the vanities of falsehood, do, their own lovingkindness, forsake.

8 “Those who (Q)regard (i)vain idolsForsake their faithfulness,

8 They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

8 Those who cling to worthless idols(U)forsake faithful love,(V)

8 Those who cling to vain idols leave behind the gracious love that could have been theirs.

9 But, I, with the voice of praise, will sacrifice unto thee, What I have vowed, I will pay, - Salvation, belongeth to Yahweh!

9 But I will (R)sacrifice to YouWith the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will (S)pay.(T)Salvation is from the Lord.”

9 But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.

9 but as for me, I will sacrifice(W) to Youwith a voice of thanksgiving.(X)I will fulfill(Y) what I have vowed.Salvation(e) is from the Lord!(Z)

9 But as for me, with a voice of thanksgiving I will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance is the LORD's!"

10 So then Yahweh spake unto the fish, - and it vomited out Jonah, upon the dry land.

10 Then the Lord commanded the (U)fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land.

10 And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

10 Then the Lord commanded the fish,(AA) and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

10 Then the LORD spoke to the sea creature, and it spewed Jonah onto the dry land.
