The Punishment Of Benjamin

1 Then all the children of Israel went out: and there gathered a congregation together as it had been but one man, even from Dan to Beersheba and out of the land of Gilead, unto the land to Mizpeh.

1 Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan even to Beersheba, with the land of Gilead, unto the LORD in Mizpeh.

1 Then all the sons of Israel from Dan to Beersheba, including the land of Gilead, came out, and the congregation assembled as one man to the Lord at (A)Mizpah.

1 All the Israelites from Dan to Beer-sheba(A) and from the land of Gilead came out, and the community assembled as one body before the Lord at Mizpah.(B)

1 Then the entire Israeli nation from Dan to Beer-sheba, including the territory of Gilead came out for war. The army assembled as one united force to God at Mizpah.

2 And there stood folk out of all quarters of all the tribes of Israel, in the congregation of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew swords.

2 And the chief of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword.

2 The (a)chiefs of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, took their stand in the assembly of the people of God, 400,000 foot (b)soldiers (B)who drew the sword.

2 The leaders(C) of all the people and of all the tribes of Israel presented themselves in the assembly of God’s people: 400,000 armed foot soldiers.

2 The officials of the entire nation, including every tribe of Israel, took their stand in the assembly of the people of God: 400,000 foot soldiers, all of them expert swordsmen.

3 And the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizphah. Then said the children of Israel, "Tell us how this wickedness happened."

3 (Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh.) Then said the children of Israel, Tell us, how was this wickedness?

3 (Now the sons of Benjamin heard that the sons of Israel had gone up to Mizpah.) And the sons of Israel said, “Tell us, how did this wickedness take place?”

3 The Benjaminites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah. The Israelites asked, “Tell us, how did this outrage occur?”

3 While the descendants of Benjamin were learning that the Israelis had gone up to Mizpah, the Israelis asked, "Somebody tell us how this evil could happen?"

4 And the Levite, the woman's husband that was slain, answered and said, "I came into Gibeah that is in Benjamin with my concubine to lodge all night.

4 And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was slain, answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.

4 So the Levite, the husband of the woman who was murdered, answered and said, “I came with my concubine to spend the night at Gibeah which belongs to Benjamin.

4 The Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, answered: “I went to Gibeah in Benjamin with my concubine to spend the night.

4 So the descendant of Levi, the husband of the murdered woman, spoke up and replied, "I came to spend the night at Gibeah, which is part of Benjamin, along with my mistress.

5 And the citizens of Gibeah rose against me, and set the house round about upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and caught my concubine and forced her, that she died.

5 And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and beset the house round about upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and my concubine have they forced, that she is dead.

5 But the (C)men of Gibeah rose up against me and surrounded the house at night because of me. They intended to kill me; instead, they (D)ravished my concubine so that she died.

5 Citizens of Gibeah ganged up on me and surrounded the house at night. They intended to kill me, but they raped my concubine, and she died.

5 But the officials of Gibeah attacked me and surrounded the house because of me. They intended to kill me, but instead they tortured my mistress to death.

6 And I took my concubine and cut her in pieces and sent her throughout all the lands of the inheritance of Israel. For they have committed abomination and folly in Israel.

6 And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel: for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel.

6 And I (E)took hold of my concubine and cut her in pieces and sent her throughout the land of Israel’s inheritance; for (F)they have committed a lewd and disgraceful act in Israel.

6 Then I took my concubine and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout Israel’s territory, because they committed a horrible shame(D) in Israel.

6 So I grabbed my mistress, cut her in pieces, and sent her remains throughout the territory of Israel's inheritance, because they've committed a vile, stupid outrage in Israel.

7 Behold, ye are all children of Israel. See therefore and give your advice in the case."

7 Behold, ye are all children of Israel; give here your advice and counsel.

7 Behold, all you sons of Israel, (G)give your advice and counsel here.”

7 Look, all of you are Israelites. Give your judgment and verdict here and now.”

7 So look, all you Israelis! Speak up and give us your advice!"

8 Then all the people arose, as it had been one man, saying, "There shall not a man of us go to his tent, neither turn into his house.

8 And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn into his house.

8 Then all the people arose as one man, saying, “Not one of us will go to his tent, nor will any of us return to his house.

8 Then all the people stood united and said, “None of us will go to his tent or return to his house.

8 Then the entire army stood up as a single unit and declared, "Nobody's going back to his tent, and nobody's going home!

9 And now this is it that we shall do to Gibeah, and cast lots against it.

9 But now this shall be the thing which we will do to Gibeah; we will go up by lot against it;

9 But now this is the thing which we will do to Gibeah; we will go up against it by lot.

9 Now this is what we will do to Gibeah: we will go against it by lot.

9 This is what we'll do to Gibeah: we're going to assemble an army by lottery.

10 And we will take ten men of the hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred of the thousand, and a thousand out of the ten thousand, to fetch victuals for the people to make that they may go against Gibeah Benjamin, according to all the folly, that they have wrought in Israel."

10 And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and an hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.

10 And we will take 10 men out of 100 throughout the tribes of Israel, and 100 out of 1,000, and 1,000 out of 10,000 to (c)supply food for the people, that when they come to (d)Gibeah of Benjamin, they may (e)punish them for all the disgraceful acts that they have committed in Israel.”

10 We will take 10 men out of every 100 from all the tribes of Israel, and 100 out of every 1,000, and 1,000 out of every 10,000 to get provisions for the people when they go to Gibeah in Benjamin to punish them for all the horror they did in Israel.”

10 We'll take ten men out of 100 from all of the tribes of Israel. We'll appoint 100 out of 1,000 and 1,000 out of 10,000 to supply provisions for the army. And when we reach Gibeah in the territory of Benjamin, we'll punish them for all of the stupid things that they've done in Israel."

11 And so all the men of Israel gathered together, unto Gibeah, knit together as it had been but one man.

11 So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.

11 Thus all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, united as one man.

11 So all the men of Israel gathered united against the city.

11 That's how the army of Israel came to be gathered together to attack the city, united as a single unit.

12 And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin saying, "What wickedness is this that is happened among you?

12 And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is done among you?

12 Then the tribes of Israel sent men through the entire (f)tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What is this wickedness that has taken place among you?

12 Then the tribes of Israel sent men throughout the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What is this outrage that has occurred among you?

12 The tribes of Israel sent men throughout the entire tribe of Benjamin to ask them, "What is this evil thing that has occurred among you?

13 Now therefore deliver us the men, those wicked wretches of Gibeah that we may slay them, and put away evil from Israel." Neverthelater, the children of Benjamin would not hearken unto the voice of their brethren the children of Israel:

13 Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel:

13 Now then, deliver up the men, the (g)(H)worthless fellows in Gibeah, that we may put them to death and (I)remove this wickedness from Israel.” But the sons of Benjamin would not listen to the voice of their brothers, the sons of Israel.

13 Hand over the perverted men in Gibeah so we can put them to death and eradicate evil from Israel.” But the Benjaminites would not obey their fellow Israelites.

13 Now then, hand over the men those ungodly men, and we'll execute them in order to remove this evil from Israel."

14 but gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to come out in battle against the children of Israel.

14 But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.

14 The sons of Benjamin gathered from the cities to Gibeah, to go out to battle against the sons of Israel.

14 Instead, the Benjaminites gathered together from their cities to Gibeah to go out and fight against the Israelites.

14 But the descendants of Benjamin wouldn't obey the request of their own relatives, the Israelis, so the descendants of Benjamin assembled from the cities of Gibeah to fight the Israelis in battle.

15 And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time, out of the cities: twenty six thousand men that drew swords, beside the inhabiters of Gibeah which were numbered seven hundred chosen men.

15 And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, beside the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men.

15 From the cities on that day the (J)sons of Benjamin were (h)numbered, 26,000 men who draw the sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah who were (i)numbered, 700 choice men.

15 On that day the Benjaminites rallied 26,000 armed men(E) from their cities, besides 700 choice men rallied by the inhabitants of Gibeah.

15 The day of the battle, the army from the descendants of Benjamin numbered 26,000 expert swordsmen from their cities, not including the inhabitants of Gibeah, who numbered 700 special forces soldiers.

16 And among all these folk were seven hundred left handed men, which every one could sling stones at a hair breadth, and not miss.

16 Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss.

16 Out of all these people 700 (K)choice men were left-handed; each one could sling a stone at a hair and not miss.

16 There were 700 choice men who were left-handed among all these people; all could sling a stone at a hair and not miss.

16 Out of all these soldiers, 700 of them were left-handed and each one could sling a stone at a hair and never miss.

17 And the children of Israel, beside the children of Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew swords, and all men of war.

17 And the men of Israel, beside Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war.

17 Then the men of Israel besides Benjamin were (j)numbered, 400,000 men who draw the sword; all these were men of war.

17 The Israelites, apart from Benjamin, rallied 400,000 armed men, every one an experienced warrior.

17 But the Israeli army not counting the tribe of Benjamin numbered 400,000 expert swordsmen, all of them battle-hardened soldiers.

The War Against The Benjaminites

18 And the children of Israel arose and went up to Bethel, and asked of God, who should begin the battle against the children of Benjamin, and the LORD said, "Judah shall begin."

18 And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the LORD said, Judah shall go up first.

18 Now the sons of Israel arose, went up to Bethel, and (L)inquired of God and said, “Who shall go up first for us to battle against the sons of Benjamin?” Then the Lord said, “Judah shall go up first.”

18 They set out, went to Bethel, and inquired of God.(F) The Israelites asked, “Who is to go first to fight for us against the Benjaminites?”And the Lord answered, “Judah will be first.”

18 The Israelis mounted up, traveled to Bethel, and asked God what to do. They said, "Who is to lead us in our opening attack against the descendants of Benjamin?" The LORD replied, "Judah is to open the attack."

19 And the children of Israel stood up early and besieged Gibeah.

19 And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah.

19 So the sons of Israel arose in the morning and camped against Gibeah.

19 In the morning, the Israelites set out and camped near Gibeah.

19 So the Israelis got up in the morning, encamped near Gibeah,

20 And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin, and put themselves in array against them, to fight against Gibeah.

20 And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel put themselves in array to fight against them at Gibeah.

20 The men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin, and the men of Israel arrayed for battle against them at Gibeah.

20 The men of Israel went out to fight against Benjamin and took their battle positions against Gibeah.

20 and the army of Israel went out to fight the tribe of Benjamin, assembling in battle array against them at Gibeah.

21 And the children of Benjamin came out of Gibeah and destroyed in Israel that day twenty two thousand men, and brought them to the earth.

21 And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men.

21 Then the sons of Benjamin came out of Gibeah and (k)(M)felled to the ground on that day 22,000 men of Israel.

21 The Benjaminites came out of Gibeah and slaughtered 22,000 men of Israel on the field that day.

21 The descendants of Benjamin came out of Gibeah, and 22,000 soldiers of Israel fell in battle that day.

22 And the folk of the children of Israel plucked up their hearts, and went to again and made battle in the same place where they did the first day:

22 And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in array in the place where they put themselves in array the first day.

22 But the people, the men of Israel, encouraged themselves and arrayed for battle again in the place where they had arrayed themselves the first day.

22 But the Israelite army rallied and again took their battle positions in the same place where they positioned themselves on the first day.

22 But the army the men of Israel encouraged themselves and arrayed for battle again the next day in the same place where they had gathered the day before.

23 but they went first up and wept before the LORD unto evening, and asked of the LORD saying, "Shall we go again to battle against the children of Benjamin, our brethren?"

23 (And the children of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until even, and asked counsel of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the LORD said, Go up against him.)

23 (N)The sons of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until evening, and (O)inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall we again draw near for battle against the sons of my brother Benjamin?” And the Lord said, “Go up against him.”

23 They went up, wept(G) before the Lord until evening, and inquired of Him: “Should we again fight against our brothers the Benjaminites?”And the Lord answered: “Fight against them.”

23 From there the Israelis went up and wept in the LORD's presence until evening. Then they asked the LORD, "Should we attack the descendants of Benjamin again?" The LORD replied, "Attack them."

24 And the LORD said, "Go up unto them." And when the children of Israel were come to the children of Benjamin the second day,

24 And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.

24 Then the sons of Israel (l)came against the sons of Benjamin the second day.

24 On the second day the Israelites advanced against the Benjaminites.

24 So the Israelis attacked the descendants of Benjamin for a second day,

25 the children of Benjamin went against them out of Gibeah, the second day, and destroyed to the earth of the children of Israel once again, eighteen thousand men that drew swords every man of them.

25 And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.

25 Benjamin went out (m)against them from Gibeah the second day and (n)felled to the ground again 18,000 men of the sons of Israel; all these drew the sword.

25 That same day the Benjaminites came out from Gibeah to meet them and slaughtered an additional 18,000 Israelites on the field; all were armed men.

25 and the tribe of Benjamin went to war against them from Gibeah during that second day, and 18,000 soldiers from the Israelis all of them expert swordsmen fell to the ground.

26 Then the children of Israel and all the people went up and came unto Bethel, and wept and sat there before the LORD, and fasted the same day unto evening, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.

26 Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the LORD, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.

26 Then (P)all the sons of Israel and all the people went up and came to Bethel and wept; thus they remained there before the Lord and fasted that day until evening. And they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.

26 The whole Israelite army went to Bethel where they wept and sat before the Lord.(H) They fasted that day until evening and offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the Lord.

26 All the Israelis, including its army, went up from there to Bethel and wept, remaining there in the LORD's presence, fasting throughout the day until dusk, when they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings in the LORD's presence.

27 And they asked the LORD - for there was the ark of the covenant of God, in those days;

27 And the children of Israel inquired of the LORD, (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,

27 The sons of Israel (Q)inquired of the Lord (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,

27 Then the Israelites inquired of the Lord. In those days, the ark of the covenant(I) of God was there,

27 The Israelis inquired of the LORD, since the Ark of the Covenant was there at that time

28 and Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron waiting upon it at that time - and they said, "Shall we go out any more to battle against the children of Benjamin our brethren, or shall we cease?" And the LORD said, "Go. For tomorrow I will deliver them into your hands."

28 And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the LORD said, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.

28 and Phinehas the son of Eleazar, Aaron’s son, stood before it to minister in those days), saying, “Shall I yet again go out to battle against the sons of my brother Benjamin, or shall I cease?” And the Lord said, “Go up, (R)for tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand.”

28 and Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, was serving before it. The Israelites asked: “Should we again fight against our brothers the Benjaminites or should we stop?”The Lord answered: “Fight, because I will hand them over to you tomorrow.”(J)

28 while Eleazar's son Phinehas, a descendant of Aaron, served before it in those days. They asked, "Should we go out to war again against the descendants of our relative Benjamin, or shall we cease?" And the LORD answered, "Go out, and tomorrow I will deliver them into your control."

29 And Israel set layers await against Gibeah round about.

29 And Israel set liers in wait round about Gibeah.

29 (S)So Israel set men in ambush around Gibeah.

29 So Israel set up an ambush(K) around Gibeah.

29 So Israel set soldiers in ambush around Gibeah.

30 And the children of Israel went against the children of Benjamin the third time, and put themselves in array against Gibeah, as twice before.

30 And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.

30 The sons of Israel went up against the sons of Benjamin on the third day and arrayed themselves against Gibeah as at other times.

30 On the third day the Israelites fought against the Benjaminites and took their battle positions against Gibeah as before.

30 The Israelis went out against the descendants of Benjamin on the third day, arraying themselves against Gibeah as they had done previously.

31 Then came the children of Benjamin against the people, till they were drawn a great way from the city. And they began to smite of the people dead - as twice before, by two highways of which one goeth up to Bethel and the other to Gibeah through the field - upon a thirty men of Israel.

31 And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.

31 (T)The sons of Benjamin went out (o)against the people and were drawn away from the city, and they began to strike (p)and kill some of the people as at other times, on the highways, one of which goes up to Bethel and the other to Gibeah, and in the field, about thirty men of Israel.

31 Then the Benjaminites came out against the people and were drawn away from the city.(L) They began to attack the people as before, killing about 30 men of Israel on the highways, one of which goes up to Bethel and the other to Gibeah through the open country.

31 They attacked the army and were drawn away from the city as they began to inflict casualties on the soldiers along the roads to Bethel and Gibeah, just as they had done the other times. About 30 soldiers from Israel fell in battle there and in the fields.

32 For the children of Benjamin thought that the other had been beaten before them, as at the first time. But the children of Israel said, "Let us flee and pluck them away from the city, unto the highways."

32 And the children of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them from the city unto the highways.

32 The sons of Benjamin said, “They are struck down before us, as at the first.” But the sons of Israel said, “Let us flee that we may draw them away from the city to the highways.”

32 The Benjaminites said, “We are defeating them as before.”But the Israelites said, “Let’s flee and draw them away from the city to the highways.”

32 Then the descendants of Benjamin told themselves, "They're falling right in front of us, just like before!"

33 And then all the men of Israel rose up out of their standing, and put themselves in array at Baaltamar. And likewise the layers in wait of Israel came forth out of their places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah,

33 And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and put themselves in array at Baaltamar: and the liers in wait of Israel came forth out of their places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah.

33 Then all the men of Israel arose from their place and arrayed themselves at Baal-tamar; (U)and the men of Israel in ambush broke out of their place, even out of Maareh-geba.

33 So all the men of Israel got up from their places and took their battle positions at Baal-tamar, while the Israelites in ambush charged out of their places west of(a) Geba.(M)

33 But the army of Israel told themselves, "Let's draw them away by escaping to the highways from the city." So the entire army of Israel moved from their location and arrayed themselves at Baal-tamer while that part of their army moved from their ambush positions from Maareh-geba.

34 and came before Gibeah: ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and there was sore battle. But the other knew not that evil was so nigh them.

34 And there came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was sore: but they knew not that evil was near them.

34 When ten thousand choice men from all Israel came against Gibeah, the battle became (q)fierce; (V)but (r)Benjamin did not know that (s)disaster was (t)close to them.

34 Then 10,000 choice men from all Israel made a frontal assault against Gibeah, and the battle was fierce, but the Benjaminites did not know that disaster was about to strike them.

34 As 10,000 of Israel's best soldiers came to fight Gibeah, the battle became fierce, but the army of Benjamin didn't know that disaster was close at hand.

35 And the LORD plagued Benjamin before Israel, so that the children of Israel destroyed in Benjamin the same day twenty five thousand and a hundred men, that drew swords every one of them.

35 And the LORD smote Benjamin before Israel: and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the sword.

35 And the Lord struck Benjamin before Israel, so that the sons of Israel destroyed 25,100 men of Benjamin that day, all (u)who draw the sword.

35 The Lord defeated Benjamin in the presence of Israel, and on that day the Israelites slaughtered 25,100 men of Benjamin; all were armed men.

35 The LORD struck Benjamin in the full view of Israel. As a result, the Israelis destroyed 25,100 soldiers of Benjamin that day, all expert swordsmen.

36 It seemed the children of Benjamin, that the other had been put to the worse. For the men of Israel gave room to Benjamin, because they trusted unto the layers in wait which they had laid against Gibeah.

36 So the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten: for the men of Israel gave place to the Benjamites, because they trusted unto the liers in wait which they had set beside Gibeah.

36 So the sons of Benjamin saw that they were (v)defeated. (W)When the men of Israel gave (w)ground to Benjamin because they relied on the men in ambush whom they had set against Gibeah,

36 Then the Benjaminites realized they had been defeated. The men of Israel had retreated before Benjamin, because they were confident in the ambush they had set against Gibeah.

36 Then the descendants of Benjamin realized that they had been defeated. The army of Israel pretended to retreat from the army of Benjamin, knowing that they had set some soldiers in ambush near Gibeah.

How The Israelites Won

37 And the layers in wait hasted and ran upon Gibeah, and went and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.

37 And the liers in wait hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.

37 (X)the men in ambush hurried and rushed against Gibeah; the men in ambush also deployed and struck all the city with the edge of the sword.

37 The men in ambush had rushed quickly against Gibeah; they advanced and put the whole city to the sword.

37 The soldiers in ambush rushed out to attack Gibeah, deploying in force and executing the entire city with swords.

38 And the appointment of the men of Israel with the layers in wait to run upon Benjamin with the sword, was when they should make the smoke rise up out of the city.

38 Now there was an appointed sign between the men of Israel and the liers in wait, that they should make a great flame with smoke rise up out of the city.

38 Now the appointed sign between the men of Israel and the men in ambush was (Y)that they would make a great cloud of smoke rise from the city.

38 The men of Israel had a prearranged signal with the men in ambush: when they sent up a great cloud of smoke from the city,

38 Meanwhile, the army of Israel had arranged to signal their soldiers who had been hiding in ambush by sending up a cloud of smoke from the city.

39 And the men of Israel fled in the battle. And Benjamin began to smite dead of the children of Israel, about a thirty persons, for they supposed that the other had been put to the worse before them, as in the first battle.

39 And when the men of Israel retired in the battle, Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle.

39 Then the men of Israel turned in the battle, and Benjamin began to strike (x)and kill about thirty men of Israel, (Z)for they said, “Surely they are (y)defeated before us, as in the first battle.”

39 the men of Israel would return to the battle. When Benjamin had begun to strike them down, killing about 30 men of Israel, they said, “They’re defeated before us, just as they were in the first battle.”(N)

39 The army of Israel turned around in the battle, and the army of Benjamin began to attack and kill about 30 soldiers, thinking, "Now we're really defeating them, just like before."

40 Then began to arise out of the city, a pillar of smoke. And the Benjamites looked back: and behold, the wasting of the whole city began to ascend up to heaven.

40 But when the flame began to arise up out of the city with a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them, and, behold, the flame of the city ascended up to heaven.

40 But when the cloud began to rise from the city in a column of smoke, Benjamin looked (AA)behind them; and behold, the whole city was going up in smoke to heaven.

40 But when the column of smoke began to go up from the city, Benjamin looked behind them, and the whole city was going up in smoke.(b)

40 But then the smoke began to rise from the city in a column. The army of Benjamin observed behind them that the whole city was going up in flames straight into the sky!

41 When the men of Israel turned again, the men of Benjamin were abashed: for they saw that evil approached them.

41 And when the men of Israel turned again, the men of Benjamin were amazed: for they saw that evil was come upon them.

41 Then the men of Israel turned, and the men of Benjamin were terrified; for they saw that (z)(AB)disaster was (aa)close to them.

41 Then the men of Israel returned, and the men of Benjamin were terrified when they realized that disaster had struck them.

41 At that point, as the army of Israel turned back to face the army of Benjamin, the army of Benjamin was filled with terror, because they realized that disaster was about to overtake them.

42 And they turned before the men of Israel into the way that leadeth to the wilderness, the other following them at the hard heels. And beside that they of the city destroyed them in the middle of them.

42 Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.

42 Therefore, they turned their backs before the men of Israel (AC)toward the direction of the wilderness, but the battle overtook them while those who came out of the cities destroyed them in the midst of them.

42 They retreated before the men of Israel toward the wilderness,(O) but the battle overtook them, and those who came out of the cities(c) slaughtered those between them.

42 So they turned tail and ran away from the army of Israel toward the wilderness, but they were overtaken in battle when soldiers came out from the cities to destroy them.

43 And they compassed Benjamin about, and chased them to Menuah, and overran them before Gibeah on the east side.

43 Thus they inclosed the Benjamites round about, and chased them, and trode them down with ease over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.

43 (AD)They surrounded Benjamin, pursued them without rest and trod them down opposite Gibeah toward the (ab)east.

43 They surrounded the Benjaminites, pursued them, and easily overtook them near Gibeah toward the east.

43 They surrounded the army of Benjamin, pursuing them ceaselessly until they defeated them near the east-facing border of Gibeah.

44 And there were slain of Benjamin eighteen thousand, and all men of might.

44 And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valour.

44 Thus 18,000 men of Benjamin fell; all these were valiant warriors.

44 There were 18,000 men who died from Benjamin; all were warriors.

44 That's how 18,000 men from the tribe of Benjamin fell in battle, all of whom were valiant soldiers.

45 And they turned and fled to the wilderness ward and unto the rock of pomegranates. And the other slew by the way of the rest of them, five thousand men, and sticked unto them until they came to Gidom, and slew two thousand more of them.

45 And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and slew two thousand men of them.

45 (ac)The rest turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of (AE)Rimmon, but they (ad)caught 5,000 of them on the highways and overtook them (ae)at Gidom and (af)killed 2,000 of them.

45 Then Benjamin turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon,(P) and Israel killed 5,000 men on the highways. They overtook them at Gidom and struck 2,000 more dead.

45 The rest of them turned and ran into the wilderness in the direction of the rock of Rimmon, but 5,000 of them were killed on the highways while 2,000 of them were overtaken and killed near Gidom.

46 So that all that were slain that same day of Benjamin were twenty five thousand men that drew swords, and all men of might.

46 So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour.

46 So all of Benjamin who fell that day were 25,000 men who draw the sword; all these were valiant warriors.

46 All the Benjaminites who died that day were 25,000 armed men; all were warriors.

46 To sum up, the soldiers from the tribe of Benjamin who died that day totaled 25,000 men, all of them expert swordsmen and valiant soldiers.

47 Only, six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness, unto the rock of pomegranates and abode there four months.

47 But six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and abode in the rock Rimmon four months.

47 But 600 men turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, and they remained at the rock of Rimmon four months.

47 But 600 men escaped into the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon and stayed there four months.

47 However, 600 soldiers ran into the wilderness in the direction of the rock of Rimmon, where they remained as fugitives for four months.

48 And then the men of Israel turned back again unto the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword in the cities, both man and beast and all that came to hand, and moreover set all the cities they could come by on fire.

48 And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.

48 The men of Israel then turned back against the sons of Benjamin and struck them with the edge of the sword, both the entire city with the cattle and all that they found; they also set on fire all the cities which they found.

48 The men of Israel turned back against the other Benjaminites and killed them with their swords—the entire city, the animals, and everything that remained. They also burned down all the cities that remained.

48 Meanwhile, the army of Israel went back to fight the surviving descendants of Benjamin. They attacked the entire city with swords, including its cattle and everyone they could find. Then they set fire to all of the cities that they could find.
