A Question From John The Baptist
1 And so it happened, when Jesus had finished instructing His twelve apostles, He left there [and went] to teach and preach in the [other] Israelite towns. [See 10:23]
1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.

Jesus Speaks About John
7 As the messengers [sent by John. See Luke 7:27] went on their way, Jesus began to talk to the crowds about John. [He said], "What did you expect to see when you went out into the desert? A tall stem swaying in the wind?
7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
7 As these men were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out into (I)the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

8 What did you expect to see? A man dressed in fancy clothes? Look, people who wear fancy clothes live in kings' palaces.
8 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.
8 (h)But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ (i)palaces!
8 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? Look, those who wear soft clothes are in kings’ palaces.
8 Really, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fancy clothes? See, those who wear fancy clothes live in kings' houses.
9 Why did you go out [to the desert]? To see a prophet? Yes, I should say [he was], and much more than a prophet.
9 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.

10 He is the one about whom it was written [Mal. 3:1], 'Look, I [will] send my messenger on ahead of you. He will prepare the pathway in front of you.'
10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
10 This is the one about whom it (k)is written,‘(K)Behold, I send My messenger (l)ahead of You,Who will prepare Your way before You.’
10 This is the one it is written about:Look, I am sending My messenger ahead of You;(b)he will prepare Your way before You.(H)(c)
10 This is the man about whom it is written, "See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'
11 It is true when I tell you, among [all] those born of women, no one greater than John the Immerser has come along. Yet the least significant person in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
11 Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is (m)least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
11 “I assure you: Among those born of women no one greater than John the Baptist has appeared,(d) but the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
11 I tell all of you with certainty, among those born of women no one has appeared who is greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least important person in the kingdom from heaven is greater than he.
12 And from the days of John the Immerser the kingdom of heaven is experiencing turmoil, for violent men are [trying to] take control of it [by bringing it into existence] forcibly [i.e., before its appointed time. See Acts 1:6-7].

An Unresponsive Generation
16 But what should I compare the people of this generation with? They are like children sitting in the open shopping market, who call out to their playmates,

16 “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places, who call out to the other children,

16 "To what can I compare the people living today? They're like little children who sit in the marketplaces and shout to each other,
17 We [pretended like we] were making music [at a wedding] but you did not dance; we [pretended like we] were wailing [at a funeral] but you did not beat your chest [in mourning].'
17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
17 and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not (r)mourn.’
17 "A wedding song we played for you, the dance you all did scorn. A woeful dirge we chanted, too, but then you would not mourn.'
19 [Then] the Son of man came eating and drinking [at festive occasions] and they said, 'Look, He is a glutton and a drunkard and a friend of tax collectors and worldly people.' It proves that [God's] wise counsel is right by the way things turn out."
19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a (s)drunkard, (R)a friend of tax collectors and (t)sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

Woes Pronounced On Unrepentant Towns
20 Then Jesus began to rebuke the people of the towns where most of His powerful miracles were performed because they did not repent [when they saw Him perform them].
20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:

For if the powerful miracles had been performed in [the cities of] Tyre and Sidon which were performed in your presence, they would have repented long ago, [demonstrating it] by wearing sackcloth [i.e., a coarse cloth made of goat hair] and throwing ashes [into the air].
21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
21 “(T)Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, (U)Bethsaida! For if the (v)miracles had occurred in (V)Tyre and (W)Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago in (w)(X)sackcloth and ashes.
21 “Woe to you, Chorazin!(N) Woe to you, Bethsaida!(O) For if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon,(P) they would have repented in sackcloth and ashes long ago!
21 "How terrible it will be for you, Chorazin! How terrible it will be for you, Bethsaida! Because if the miracles that happened in you had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 But I tell you, Tyre and Sidon will be shown more leniency on the judgment day than you people will.
22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
22 Nevertheless I say to you, (Y)it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in (Z)the day of judgment than for you.
22 But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment(Q) than for you.
22 Indeed I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on Judgment Day than for you!
23 And Capernaum, do you think you will be lifted up toward heaven [as a proud city]? [No indeed], you will [surely] go down to the place of the unseen [i.e., become obscure or obliterated as a city]. For if the powerful miracles had been performed in Sodom which were performed in your presence, it would have remained [even] until today.
23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
23 And you, (AA)Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will (AB)descend to (AC)Hades; for if the (x)miracles had occurred in (AD)Sodom which occurred in you, it would have remained to this day.
23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to Hades.(R) For if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until today.
23 "And you, Capernaum! You won't be lifted up to heaven, will you? You'll go down to Hell! Because if the miracles that happened in you had taken place in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.
24 But I say to you, Sodom will be shown more leniency on the judgment day than you will."

A Yoke That Is Easy
25 About that time Jesus said [in prayer], "I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things [i.e., the significance of Jesus' words and works] from those who [thought they] were wise and intelligent and have [instead] revealed them to people who are child-like.
25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
25 (AG)At that (y)time Jesus said, “I praise You, (AH)Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that (AI)You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants.
25 At that time Jesus said,(S) “I praise(j) You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned and revealed them to infants.(T)
25 At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from wise and intelligent people and have revealed them to infants.
27 "All things have been entrusted to me by my Father and no one [truly] knows the Son except the Father. And neither does anyone [truly] know the Father except the Son and that person to whom the Son wants to reveal Him.
27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
27 (AK)All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father (AL)except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.
