The Temptation Of Jesus

1 Then Jesus was led up to the desert by the Holy Spirit in order to be put to the test by the devil.

1 (A)Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness (B)to be tempted by the devil.

1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

1 Then(A) Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the Devil.(B)

1 After this, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the Devil.

2 After He had fasted forty days and nights, He was [very] hungry.

2 And after He had (C)fasted forty days and forty nights, He (a)then became hungry.

2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

2 After He had fasted 40 days and 40 nights,(C) He was hungry.

2 After fasting for 40 days and 40 nights, he finally became hungry.

3 The tempter [i.e., the devil] came and said to Him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to turn into bread."

3 And (D)the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the (E)Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

3 Then the tempter approached Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”(D)

3 Then the tempter came. "Since you are the Son of God," he said, "tell these stones to become loaves of bread."

4 But Jesus answered, "It is written [Deut. 8:3], 'A person is not to live by [eating] bread only, but [instead] by [believing and obeying] every statement spoken by God.'"

4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘(F)Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”

4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

4 But He answered, “It is written:Man must not live on bread alonebut on every word that comesfrom the mouth of God.(E)(a)

4 But he answered, "It is written, "One must not live on bread alone, but on every word coming out of the mouth of God.'"

5 Then the devil took Him to the holy city [i.e., Jerusalem] and placed Him on an [elevated] wing of the Temple,

5 Then the devil *took Him into (G)the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple,

5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

5 Then the Devil took Him to the holy city,(b) had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple,(F)

5 Then the Devil took him to the Holy City and had him stand on the highest point of the Temple.

6 and said to Him, "If you are the Son of God jump off, for it is written [Psalm 91:11-12]: 'He will put His angels in charge of you' and 'They will lift you up with their hands so you do not trip over a stone.'"

6 and *said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written,(H)He will command His angels concerning You’;andOn their hands they will bear You up,So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”

6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:He will give His angels(G) orders concerning you,and they will support you with their handsso that you will not strikeyour foot against a stone.(H)(c)

6 He told Jesus, "Since you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, because it is written, "God will put his angels in charge of you,' and, "With their hands they will hold you up, so that you will never hit your foot against a rock.'"

7 Jesus said to him, "It is also written [Deut. 6:16], 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'"

7 Jesus said to him, (b)On the other hand, it is written, ‘(I)You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

7 Jesus told him, “It is also written: Do not test the Lord your God.(I)(d)

7 Jesus responded to him, "It is also written, "You must not tempt the Lord your God.'"

8 The devil took Him again, [this time] to a very high mountain and showed Him all the world's kingdoms, along with their splendor,

8 (J)Again, the devil *took Him to a very high mountain and *showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory;

8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

8 Again, the Devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.

8 Once more the Devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, along with their splendor.

9 and said to Him, "I will give you all these things if you fall to the ground and worship me."

9 and he said to Him, “(K)All these things I will give You, if You fall down and (c)worship me.”

9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

9 And he said to Him, “I will give You all these things if You will fall down and worship me.”(e)

9 He told Jesus, "I will give you all these things if you will bow down and worship me!"

10 Then Jesus replied to him, "Get away from me Satan, for it is written [Deut. 6:13], 'You are supposed to worship the Lord your God, and serve only Him.'"

10 Then Jesus *said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, ‘(L)You shall worship the Lord your God, and (d)serve Him only.’”

10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

10 Then Jesus told him, “Go away,(f) Satan! For it is written:Worship the Lord your God,and serve only(J) Him.(g)

10 Then Jesus told him, "Go away, Satan! Because it is written, "You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'"

11 Then the devil left Him and angels came and tended to His needs [i.e., food, water, etc.].

11 Then the devil *left Him; and behold, (M)angels came and began to minister to Him.

11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

11 Then the Devil left Him, and immediately angels came and began to serve Him.(K)

11 So the Devil left him, and angels came and began ministering to him.

13 [After] leaving Nazareth [i.e., a major town in Galilee], He came to live in Capernaum, [a city] beside Lake Galilee, near the districts of Zebulun and Naphtali.

13 and leaving Nazareth, He came and (P)settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali.

13 He left Nazareth and settled in Capernaum by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali,

14 [This was] so that what Isaiah the prophet had spoken would be fulfilled, saying,

14 This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet:

14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

14 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

14 in order to fulfill what was declared by the prophet Isaiah when he said,

15 [Isa. 9:1-2] "The districts of Zebulun and Naphtali, near the lake, beyond [i.e., where it enters] the Jordan in Galilee, [the territory] of the Gentiles;

15 (Q)The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,(e)By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the (f)Gentiles

15 The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;

15 Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,along the sea road, beyond the Jordan,Galilee of the Gentiles!

15 "O Land of Zebulun and Land of Naphtali, on the road to the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the unbelievers!

16 the people who lived [there] in [spiritual] darkness saw a great light. Light shone upon these people, who lived in an area that was under the shadow of death."

16 (R)The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light,And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death,Upon them a Light dawned.”

16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.

16 The people who live in darknesshave seen a great light,and for those living in the shadowland of death,light has dawned.(h)(O)(i)

16 The people living in darkness have seen a great light, and for those living in the land and shadow of death, a light has risen."

Jesus Chooses Some Followers

17 From that time onward Jesus began to preach, saying, "You people [must] repent [i.e., change your hearts and lives], for the kingdom of heaven is near."

17 (S)From that time Jesus began to (g)preach and say, (T)Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
