1 My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
1 My son, if you accept my words, and treasure my instructions
1 My son, if you will receive my wordsAnd treasure my commandments within you,
2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
2 making your ear attentive to wisdom, and turning your heart to understanding
2 So that your ear is attentive to [skillful and godly] wisdom,And apply your heart to understanding [seeking it conscientiously and striving for it eagerly];
3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
3 furthermore, if you call out to insightand lift your voice to understanding,
3 if, indeed, you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding,
3 Yes, if you cry out for insight,And lift up your voice for understanding;
4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
4 if you seek it like silver and search for it like hidden treasure,
4 If you seek skillful and godly wisdom as you would silverAnd search for her as you would hidden treasures;
5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
5 then you will understand the fear of the Lordand discover the knowledge of God.
5 then you will understand the fear of the LORD and learn to know God.
6 For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
6 For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
6 For the Lord gives [skillful and godly] wisdom;From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.
7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright and is a shield to those who walk in integrity
7 He stores away sound wisdom for the righteous [those who are in right standing with Him];He is a shield to those who walk in integrity [those of honorable character and moral courage],
8 He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.
8 guarding the paths of the just and protecting the way of his faithful ones.
9 Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.
9 Then you will understand righteousness, justice,and integrity—every good path.
9 Then you will understand what is right, just, and upright every good path.
9 Then you will understand righteousness and justice [in every circumstance]And integrity and every good path.
10 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;
10 For wisdom will enter your mind,and knowledge will delight your heart.
10 For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
10 For [skillful and godly] wisdom will enter your heartAnd knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:
11 Discretion will protect you; understanding will watch over you,
11 Discretion will watch over you,Understanding and discernment will guard you,
12 To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;
12 rescuing you from the way of evil—from the one who says perverse things,
12 delivering you from the way of evil, from men who speak perverse things,
12 To keep you from the way of evil and the evil man,From the man who speaks perverse things;
13 Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;
13 and from those who abandon the right path to travel along the ways of darkness;
13 From those who leave the paths of uprightnessTo walk in the ways of darkness;
14 Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked;
14 who delight in doing evil, and rejoice in the perverseness of evil;
14 Who find joy in doing evilAnd delight in the perversity of evil,
15 Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths:
15 whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways,
15 Whose paths are crooked,And who are devious in their ways;
16 To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;
16 delivering you from the adulteress, from the immoral woman with her seductive words,
17 Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God.
17 someone who abandoned the companion of her youth and forgot the covenant of her God.
17 Who leaves the companion (husband) of her youth,And forgets the covenant of her God.
18 For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead.
18 For her house leads down to death, and her paths down to the realm of the dead.
18 For her house leads down to deathAnd her paths lead to the dead;
19 None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.
19 None who go to her return, nor do they reach the paths of life.
19 None who go to her return again,Nor do they regain the paths of life—
20 That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous.
20 This is how you will walk in the way of good men and will keep to the paths of the righteous.
20 So you will walk in the way of good men [that is, those of personal integrity, moral courage and honorable character],And keep to the paths of the righteous.
21 For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it.
21 For the upright will live in the land, and people of integrity will remain in it.
21 For the upright [those who are in right standing with God] will live in the landAnd those [of integrity] who are blameless [in God’s sight] will remain in it;
22 But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.
22 But the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the treacherous will be uprooted from it.
22 But the wicked will be cut off from the landAnd the treacherous shall be [forcibly] uprooted and removed from it.
