MERCY, MERCIFUL

Mercy (French merci) is traced, through ecclesiastical Latin, to merces (reward); it seems to have got its meaning from the exclamation of the alms-receiver, 'Merci!' i.e. 'Reward to you (in heaven)!' 'May God reward you!'
