the second advent of Christ. Three different Greek words are used by the apostles to express this, (1) apokalupsis (1Co 1; 7; 2Th 1:7; 1Pe 1:7,13); (2) parousia (Mt 24:3,27; 1Th 2:19; Jas 5:7-8); (3) epiphaneia (1Ti 6:14; 2Ti 1:10; 4:1-8; Tit 2:13). There existed among Christians a wide expectation, founded on Mt 24:29-30,34, of the speedy return of Christ. (See Millennium.)

As he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, his disciples came to him privately and said, "Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"
For just like the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so the coming of the Son of Man will be.
"Immediately after the suffering of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man arriving on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.
and to you who are being afflicted to give rest together with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels.
to obey this command without fault or failure until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ
For there are many rebellious people, idle talkers, and deceivers, especially those with Jewish connections,
as we wait for the happy fulfillment of our hope in the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
So be patient, brothers and sisters, until the Lord's return. Think of how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the ground and is patient for it until it receives the early and late rains. You also be patient and strengthen your hearts, for the Lord's return is near.
