After Noah was five hundred years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Now Noah became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

On the very same day Noah and Shem and Ham and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark,

The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem and Ham and Japheth. Ham would become the father of Canaan.

So Shem and Japheth took a robe and put it on both their shoulders, and walked backwards and covered the nakedness of their father; their faces were turned away so that they did not see their father’s nakedness.

He also said,

“Blessed be the Lord,
The God of Shem;
And let Canaan be his servant.


“May God enlarge [the land of] Japheth,
And let him dwell in the tents of Shem;
And let Canaan be his servant.”

These are the records of the generations (descendants) of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah; and the sons born to them after the flood:

Also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber [including the Hebrews], the older brother of Japheth, children were born.

The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud and Aram;

These are Shem’s descendants according to their constituent groups (families), according to their languages, by their lands, according to their nations.

These are the records of the generations of Shem [from whom Abraham descended]. Shem was a hundred years old when he became the father of Arpachshad, two years after the flood.

And Shem lived five hundred years after Arpachshad was born, and he had other sons and daughters.

These are the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These are the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife.

These are the sons of Reuel, Esau’s son: Chiefs Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, Mizzah. These are the chiefs of Reuel in the land of Edom; they are the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife.

But Jonadab the son of Shimeah, David’s brother, responded, “Do not let my lord assume that all the king’s sons have been put to death; for only Amnon is dead. This act of revenge has been on Absalom’s mind since the day Amnon violated his sister Tamar.

When King David came to Bahurim, a man named Shimei, the son of Gera, came out from there. He was of the family of Saul’s household and he was cursing continually as he came out.

This is what Shimei said as he cursed: “Get out, get out, you man of bloodshed, you worthless and useless man!

So David and his men went on the road; and Shimei went along on the hillside close beside David and cursed as he went and threw stones and dust at him.

Then Joab came into the house to the king and said, “Today you have put all your servants to shame who this day have saved your life and the lives of your sons and your daughters, and the lives of your wives and concubines.

Then Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, hurried and came down with the men [from the tribe of] of Judah to meet King David,

Then they [repeatedly] crossed the ford to bring over the king’s household (family), and to do what pleased him. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king as he was about to cross the Jordan,

But Abishai the son of Zeruiah said, “Should not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the Lord’s anointed?”

Therefore the king said to Shimei, “You shall not be put to death.” And so the king gave him his promise.

And when he taunted and defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimei, David’s brother, killed him.

Next to Eleazar was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. The Philistines were gathered into an army where there was a plot of ground full of lentils, and the people [of Israel] fled from the Philistines.

But Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and David’s most formidable warriors did not side with Adonijah [in his desire to become king].

And look, you have with you Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite of Bahurim; he is the one who cursed me with a sinister curse the day I went to Mahanaim. Shimei said to the king, “The word (ruling) is good. As my lord the king has said, so will your servant do.” So Shimei lived in Jerusalem for many days.

But it happened after three years, that two of Shimei’s servants ran away to Achish the son of Maacah, the king of Gath. And Shimei was told, “Behold, your [runaway] servants are in Gath.”

So Shimei arose, saddled his donkey, and went to Gath to [King] Achish to look for his servants. And Shimei went and brought them back from Gath.

Now Solomon was told that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and had returned.

So the king sent word and called for Shimei and said to him, “Did I not make you swear by the Lord and solemnly warn you, saying, ‘Know for certain that on the day you leave [Jerusalem] and go anywhere, you shall surely die’? And you said to me, ‘The word (ruling) I have heard is good.’

The king also said to Shimei, “You are aware in your own heart of all the evil you did to my father David; so the Lord shall return your evil on your own head.

So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and he went out and struck down Shimei, and he died.So the kingdom was established in the hands of Solomon.

But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

Noah, [and his sons] Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, Aram, Uz, Hul, Gether, and Meshech.

Shem [his genealogical line], Arpachshad, Shelah,

The sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah.

Jesse became the father of Eliab his firstborn, Abinadab the second, Shimea the third,

The sons of Onam: Shammai and Jada. The sons of Shammai: Nadab and Abishur.

The sons of Jada the brother of Shammai: Jether and Jonathan. Jether died childless.

The sons of Hebron: Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema.

Shema became the father of Raham, the father of Jorkeam. And Rekem became the father of Shammai.

The son of Shammai was Maon; Maon became the father of Bethzur.

These were born to David in Jerusalem: Shimea (Shammua), Shobab, Nathan, Solomon—four by Bath-shua (Bathsheba) daughter of Ammiel (Eliam);

The sons of Pedaiah: Zerubbabel and Shimei. The sons of Zerubbabel: Meshullam and Hananiah, and Shelomith was their sister;

When he taunted Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea, David’s brother, killed him.

Of the Gershonites: Ladan (Libni) and Shimei.

The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran—three in all. These were the heads of the fathers’ households of Ladan.
