What Israel is seeking for, this he did not obtain; but the election obtained it, and the rest were hardened; as it has been written, "God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear, unto this day." And David says, "Let their table be a snare, and a trap, and a stumbling-block, and a recompense to them: let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back always." I Say, then, did they stumble, that they might fall? It could not be! But by their trespass salvation has come to the gentiles to provoke them to rivalry.
