John baptized in the wilderness and preached the baptism of repentance, for the remission of sins. And there went out to him all the land of Judea, and all they of Jerusalem, and were baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

I indeed have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Ghost. And in those days, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John at Jordan. And coming up from the water, straitway he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him.

And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes, That Elijah must come first? And Jesus answering said to them, Elijah truly doth come first, and regulate all things. And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem, to ask him, Who art thou? And he confessed and denied not, but confessed, I am not the Christ. And they asked him, What then, Art thou Elijah? read more.

And thou, child, shalt be a prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord, to prepare his ways, To give knowledge of salvation to his people, by the remission of their sins, Thro' the tender mercy of our God, whereby the Day-spring from on high hath visited us, read more.

He was a burning and a shining light, and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

John having first preached before his coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John was fulfilling his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But behold one cometh after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose.
