we are now going to Jerusalem, where the son of man will be betrayed to the chief priests, and to the Scribes, who will condemn him to die, and deliver him up to the Gentiles, to be insulted, scourged, and crucified: but the third day he shall rise again.

but he answered them, this wicked degenerate race demand a miracle; but no other miracle shall they have, except that of the prophet Jonas. for as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly: so shall the son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Some time after, while they were in Galilee, Jesus said to them, the son of man will be betrayed into the hands of men: they will kill him, but the third day he shall be raised again. at which they were exceeding sorry.

to this he answered, he that has his hand in the dish with mine, he it is that will betray me. the son of man is going to die, pursuant to the scripture: but wo to that man by whom the son of man is betrayed: it had been better for that man, if he had never been born.

and at his return, he said to his disciples, is this a time to sleep and take your rest? the hour draws nigh, and the son of man is betrayed into the hands of the gentiles. rise, let us be gone, there he is, the traytor is just upon us.

When they were on the road to Jerusalem, Jesus led the way, and they followed behind full of apprehension and fear. then Jesus calling the twelve apostles to him again, acquainted them with what should befal him. now, said he, we are going to Jerusalem, where the son of man will be delivered up to the chief priests, and to the Scribes, who will condemn him to die, and deliver him to the Gentiles. they will treat him with ignominy, subject him to the lash, spit upon him, and at last put him to death. but on the third day he will rise again.

the son of man must suffer many indignities: be rejected by the rulers, the chief priests, and Scribes: be put to death: and the third day be raised again. Then he said to the whole company, if any one will be my follower, let him renounce himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me. for whoever would save his life, shall lose it: and he that would lose his life, out of love to me, shall save it.

Afterwards Jesus took the twelve aside, and said to them, now we are going to Jerusalem where all that the prophets have writ concerning the son of man shall be accomplished. for he shall be delivered to the Gentiles by the Jews, who will treat him with mockery, insult him, spit in his face, scourge him, and put him to death; and the third day he shall rise again.

I say not this of you all; for I know whom I have chosen: and that passage of the scripture must be fulfilled, "He that eateth bread with me, hath lift up his heel against me." I tell it you now before it happens, that when it is come to pass, you may believe that I am the Messias. I declare unto you, he that receiveth him that I send, receiveth me: and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me. read more.
When Jesus utter'd these words, he was troubled in spirit, and said without disguise, I assure you, that one of you shall betray me. then the disciples looked one on another, being in pain to know who he meant. now the favourite disciple of Jesus sat next to him at table. Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, to ask who it was he meant. then accordingly bending his head to Jesus's ear, he whisper'd, Lord, who is it? Jesus answered, he it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have made it. and when he had made the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. and after he had taken the sop, Satan entred into him. then said Jesus to him, what you do, do quickly.

Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where are you going? Jesus answered him, you cannot at present follow me, where I am going; but hereafter you shall. Peter said to him, Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for your sake. Jesus answered him, you lay down your life for my sake! Verily, verily I say unto thee, the cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.

but whosoever shall renounce me before men, him will I also renounce before my father who is in heaven. don't imagine that I am come to bring peace upon the earth: I came not to bring peace, but war. my coming will occasion discord between the son and his father, between the daughter and her mother, between the daughter in law and her mother in law: read more.
even a man's own domestics shall prove his foes. he that loveth father or mother more than me, is unworthy of me: he that loveth son or daughter more than me, is unworthy of me. and he that does not take his cross, and so follow after me, is unworthy of me. he that would preserve his life, shall lose it: and he that exposeth his life for my sake, shall save it. He that receives you, receives me; and he that receives me, receives him that sent me. he that receives a prophet in quality of a prophet, shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receives a just man, as such, shall receive the reward of the just.

At the same time came the disciples to Jesus, saying, who is to be the greatest in the kingdom of the Messiah? and Jesus called a child to him, set him in the midst of them, and said, I declare to you, except ye lay aside your ambition, and become as children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of the Messias. read more.
he therefore who shall become as void of ambition as this child, he shall be greatest in the kingdom of the Messiah. and whoever shall receive one that is like such a child, in my name, receiveth me.

then sitting down, he address'd himself to the twelve, saying, he that would be the first, must be the last of all, and the servant of all. then taking a little child, he set him down before them; and embracing him in his arms, he said to them, whoever receives such a child as this upon my account, receives me; and he that receiveth me, does not so properly receive me, as the commands of him that sent me. read more.
Upon this occasion John address'd himself to Jesus, saying, master, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, tho' he did not belong to us, for which reason we opposed him. but Jesus said, do not oppose him: for no man can speak evil of me, at the same time he works a miracle by virtue of my name.

Jesus said to him, he that comes out from bathing has occasion only to wash his feet, the rest of his body being clean: so you are clean, but not every one of you. for he knew who would betray him; therefore, said he, you are not every one of you clean. after he had washed their feet, he took his garment, and setting down again, he said to them, do you comprehend what I have been doing? read more.
you call me master, and lord: and you are in the right; for so I am. if I then, tho' lord and master, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. for I have given you example, that you might behave to one another, as I have to you. I declare unto you, the servant is not greater than his lord, neither he that is sent, greater than he that sent him. if ye comprehend these things, happy are ye if ye put them in practice. I say not this of you all; for I know whom I have chosen: and that passage of the scripture must be fulfilled, "He that eateth bread with me, hath lift up his heel against me." I tell it you now before it happens, that when it is come to pass, you may believe that I am the Messias.
