He laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out of the rock. Then he rolled a great stone in front of the door of the tomb, and departed. Mary Magdalene was near the tomb. The other Mary was also there. It was morning, the day after Preparation. The chief priests and the Pharisees were gathered together with Pilate. They said: Sir, we remember while he was yet alive, the deceiver said, 'After three days I will rise again.' Command the tomb be secured until the third day. Otherwise his disciples could come and steal him away. They could say to the people. 'He is risen from the dead.' The last deception will be worse than the first. Pilate said to them: You have a guard; make it as secure as you can. So they made the tomb secure. They sealed the stone and placed a guard there.

Evening arrived. It was the Preparation Day (Exodus 16:22-27), the day before the Sabbath. Joseph of Arimathaea was a prominent council member who also was looking for the Kingdom of God. He boldly approached Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. Pilate wondered if he were already dead. So he summoned the centurion and asked him about the death. read more.
When the centurion confirmed it he granted the body to Joseph. He bought a linen cloth, and taking him down, wound him in the linen cloth. Then he laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of a rock. He took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth. Then he laid him in a tomb that was carved in stone. No man had ever lain in this tomb. It was the day of the Preparation and the Sabbath was near. The women from Galilee went with him to see the tomb and the place for the body. They returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

It was Preparation and the Jews insisted that bodies not remain on the stake on the Sabbath. The day of that Sabbath was a high day. They asked Pilate that the legs be broken and that they might be taken away. The soldiers broke the legs of the two who were impaled with him. When they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already so they did not break his legs. read more.

So he took the body away. Nicodemus also came with a mixture of myrrh and about a hundred pounds of aloes. Nicodemus is the one who came to Jesus at night. They prepared the body of Jesus for burial. They bound it in linen cloths with spices. This was the custom of the Jews. There was a garden at the place where he was impaled. It contained a new tomb where no one had been buried. They laid Jesus there because the Jews Preparation was close at hand.

Moses and Aaron assembled the congregation in front of the rock and said to them: Listen, you rebels, must we bring water out of this rock for you? Moses raised his hand and hit the rock twice with the staff. Water came pouring out! All the people and their animals drank.

Behold! I will stand before you there upon the rock in Horeb. Strike the rock and water will come out of it. Then the people may drink. Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.

You are Jehovah, the true God, who took Abram and made him yours, guiding him from Ur of the Chaldees, and gave him the name of Abraham; You saw that his heart was true to you, and made an agreement with him to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Jebusite and the Girgashite, even to give it to his seed, and you have done what you said; for righteousness is yours. You saw the trouble of our fathers in Egypt, and their cry came to your ears by the Red Sea. read more.
You did signs and wonders on Pharaoh and all his servants and all the people of his land. You saw how cruel they were to them. So you made a name for yourself as it is today. You parted the sea before them, so that they went through the sea on dry land; and those who went after them went down into the deep, like a stone into great waters. And you went before them by day in a pillar of cloud and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light on the way they were to go. You came down on Mount Sinai, and your voice came to them from heaven, giving them right decisions and true laws, good rules and orders. They received word of your holy Sabbath from you. You gave them orders and rules and a law, by the hand of Moses your servant. They received bread from heaven when they were in need, and you made water come out of the rock for their drink, and gave them orders to go in and take for their heritage the land that your hand give them.

He split the rocks in the wilderness and gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths.

You will put to shame all that forsake you, O Jehovah, the hope of Israel. Those who turn away on earth will be written down, for they have forsaken Jehovah, the fountain of living water.

How precious is your loving-kindness, O God! And the children of men put their trust in the shadow of your wings. They drink their fill of the abundance of your house. You give them the river of your delights to drink. For with you is the fountain (source) of life. In your light we see light. (Jeremiah 2:13) (Acts 17:28)

Be horrified over this, heaven. Be terribly afraid, declares Jehovah. My people have done two things wrong: (l) They have abandoned me, the fountain (source) of living waters. They have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. (Revelation 4:11)
