And the youngest of them said to the father, Father, give me the portion of the estate that falls to me; and he divided to them his living. And not many days after, the youngest son, collecting all his property, went abroad to a distant country; and there wasted his property, living intemperately. And when he had spent all, there was a severe famine in that country; and he began to be in want. And he went and attached himself to one of the citizens of that country; and he sent him into his field to feed swine. And he desired to fill his stomach with the carob pods which the swine eat; and no man gave him. And coming to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father abound in bread, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and say to him, Father, I have sinned to Heaven, and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me as one of your hired servants. And he arose, and came to his father. But while he was yet far off, his father saw him, and had compassion on him, and ran and fell on his neck, and kissed him. And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned to Heaven, and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son. But the father said to his servants, Bring out the best robe and put on him; and put a ring on his hand, and sandals on his feet; and bring the fatted calf and kill it; let us eat, and rejoice; for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.
