Many times He restrained His anger
And did not stir up all His wrath.
Many times did [God] deliver them, but they were rebellious in their counsel and sank low through their iniquity. For if He causes grief,
Then He will have compassion
According to His abundant lovingkindness and tender mercy.

Rejoice not against me, O my enemy! When I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light to me. Even so, they will be cut off and pass away.

So the Lord changed His mind about the harm which He had said He would do to His people.
Who knows, God may turn [in compassion] and relent and withdraw His burning anger (judgment) so that we will not perish.”
