Reuben, thou are my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the pre-eminence of dignity, and the pre-eminence of power. Boiling over as water, thou shall not have the pre-eminence, because thou went up to thy father's bed, then thou defiled it; he went up to my couch.

And the sons of Reuben the first-born of Israel (for he was the first-born, but, inasmuch as he defiled his father's couch, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel, and so the genealogy is not to be reckone

Judah, thy brothers shall praise thee. Thy hand shall be on the neck of thine enemies. Thy father's sons shall bow down before thee.


They shall come with weeping. And I will lead them with supplications. I will cause them to walk by rivers of waters, in a straight way in which they shall not stumble. For I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.

Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he a darling child? For as often as I speak against him, I do earnestly remember him still. Therefore my heart yearns for him. I will surely have mercy upon him, says LORD.

And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the sons of Israel instead of all the first-born who opens the womb among the sons of Israel. And the Levites shall be mine,

And LORD said to Moses, Number all the first-born males of the sons of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names. And thou shall take the Levites for me (I am LORD) instead of all the first-born among the sons of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattle of the sons of Israel. And all the first-born males according to the number of names, from a month old and upward, of those who were numbered of them, were twenty-two thousand two hundred and seventy-three.

And I have taken the Levites instead of all the first-born among the sons of Israel.



I also will make him first-born, the highest of the kings of the earth.



And it came to pass, when Pharaoh would hardly let us go, that LORD slew all the first-born in the land of Egypt, both the first-born of man, and the first-born of beast. Therefore I sacrifice to LORD all that opens the womb, being

for all the first-born are mine. On the day that I smote all the first-born in the land of Egypt I hallowed to me all the first-born in Israel, both man and beast. They shall be mine. I am LORD.

And God said, No, but Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son, and thou shall call his name Isaac. And I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his seed after him. And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall beget twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to thee at this set time in the next year.


And he blessed Joseph, and said, The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has fed me all my life long to this day, the [heavenly] agent who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads, and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth. And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him. And he held up his father's hand, to remove it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head. read more.
And Joseph said to his father, Not so, my father, for this is the firstborn, put thy right hand upon his head. And his father refused, and said, I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great. However, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations. And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee will Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh. And he set Ephraim before Manasseh.


And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel's left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel's right hand, and brought them near to him. And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim's head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh's head, guiding his hands deliberately, for Manasseh was the firstborn.


Only the firstling among beasts, which is made a firstling to LORD, no man shall sanctify it, whether it be ox or sheep, it is LORD's.


and thou shall give the money, with which the odd number of them is redeemed, to Aaron and to his sons. And Moses took the redemption-money from those who were over and above those who were redeemed by the Levites. He took the money from the first-born of the sons of Israel, a thousand three hundred and sixty-five [shekels], according to the shekel of the sanctuary. read more.
And Moses gave the redemption-money to Aaron and to his sons, according to the word of LORD, as LORD commanded Moses.


And for the redemption of the two hundred and seventy-three of the first-born of the sons of Israel, who are over and above [the number of] the Levites, thou shall take five shekels apiece by the poll. According to the shekel of the sanctuary thou shall take them (the shekel is twenty gerahs),


also the first-born of our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the law, and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our God, to the priests who minister in the house of our God,


And to Shem, the father of all the sons of Eber, the elder brother of Japheth, sons were also born to him.


And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat of it. And LORD had respect to Abel and to his offering, but he did not have respect to Cain and to his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.


And the flesh of them shall be thine. As the wave-breast and as the right thigh, it shall be thine.




And those that are to be redeemed of them from a month old shall thou redeem, according to thine estimation, for the money of five shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary (the same is twenty gerahs).


But the firstling of a cow, or the firstling of a sheep, or the firstling of a goat, thou shall not redeem. They are holy. Thou shall sprinkle their blood upon the altar, and shall burn their fat for an offering made by fire, for a


Everything that opens the womb, of all flesh which they offer to LORD, both of man and beast shall be thine. Nevertheless the first-born of man thou shall surely redeem, and the firstling of unclean beasts thou shall redeem.


And LORD said to Moses, See, I have made thee as God to Pharaoh, and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet. Thou shall speak all that I command thee, and Aaron thy brother shall speak to Pharaoh, that he let the sons of Israel go out of his land.


And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord, (just as it is written in a law of Lord that every male that opens a womb will be called holy to the Lord),
