my coming will occasion discord between the son and his father, between the daughter and her mother, between the daughter in law and her mother in law:

do you imagine that my coming will produce peace on the earth? I tell you, no; but rather division. for the future, if there are five persons in one family, they will be divided; three against two, and two against three.

and the people were much divided about him: for some said, he is a good man: others said, not at all; but he seduces the people.

many of the people therefore, who heard this discourse, said, this man is certainly a prophet. some said, this is the Messias. but said others, shall the Messias come out of Galilee? hath not the scripture said, that the Messiah is to rise out of the family of David, and out of Bethlehem, the village where David was born?read more.
so that the people were divided in their opinions about him.

thereupon some of the Pharisees said, this man has no divine mission, because he does not observe the sabbath. but said others, if he be an impostor, how can he do such miracles? and there was a schism among them.

There was another schism therefore among the Jews, occasion'd by this discourse.

so that the people of the city were divided, some siding with the Jews, and others with the apostles.

upon which Paul and Barnabas having warmly contested the point with them, it was resolved, that Paul and Barnabas and some others should go to Jerusalem to consult the apostles upon this question.

and after the question had been much canvass'd, Peter rose up, and said, my brethren, you know that a considerable time since God chose me from among you to preach the gospel to the Gentiles, and bring them to the faith.

at these words the Pharisees and the Sadducees were all in confusion, the whole assembly being divided: for the Sadducees maintain, there is neither resurrection, nor angel, or spirit, whereas the Pharisees acknowledge both: the clamour was great, and the Scribes taking part with the Pharisees, grew warm in the debate, and said, "we find no harm in this man; perhaps a spirit or an angel has spoke to him."read more.
but the tumult growing worse, the tribune apprehensive that Paul might be torn to pieces among them, order'd detachment to secure him by force of arms, and bring him to the castle.

Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to maintain all the same doctrine, to suffer no divisions among you; but to be perfectly united in the same mind, and in the same judgment.

for you are still subject to your passions. since envy, and strife, and divisions are among you, are you not actuated by the vices of the animal part? while one cries I am Paul's disciple, and another, I am Apollo's, are ye not vicious?

All these things happened to them for examples: and are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come. wherefore let him that thinks he stands firm, take heed lest he fall. you have met with no trials yet, but such as are common to men: and God who is faithful, will not suffer you to be tempted above your strength; but will with the temptation make a way to escape, by enabling you to bear it.

and I of Christ." is the school of Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were you baptized into the name of Paul? I thank God, I baptized none of you, except Crispus and Gaius: lest any should say, I had baptized into mine own name. true, I baptized the family of Stephanas: but I don't know that I baptized any other besides. for Christ did not send me to baptize: but to preach the gospel: tho' not with the preaching of the wise, lest the cross of Christ should have been hinder'd in its efficacy.

He that does not join with me, is against me: and he that is not active for me, is a deserter.

However some that arrived from Judea, told the Gentile converts, unless you are circumcised agreeably to the law of Moses, you cannot be saved. upon which Paul and Barnabas having warmly contested the point with them, it was resolved, that Paul and Barnabas and some others should go to Jerusalem to consult the apostles upon this question.

Some time after, Paul said to Barnabas, let us return to visit all those cities, where we have preach'd the word of the Lord, to see what condition the brethren are in. upon which Barnabas propos'd to take John surnam'd Mark, with them. but Paul did not think it proper to take one that had quitted them at Pamphylia, refusing to accompany them in their ministry.read more.
and the contention was so sharp between them, that they separated: so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed to Cyprus. but Paul chose Silas, and having been recommended by the brethren to the favour of God, he departed, and passing through Syria and Cilicia, he settled the churches there.

this man is known to be a pernicious fellow that goes about the world to raise seditions among the Jews: he is the ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes,

Now I beseech you, brethren, mark those who cause divisions and revolts against the doctrine which you have learned; and avoid them.

At my departure from Macedonia, I advised you to stay at Ephesus in order to charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, or trouble their heads with fables and endless genealogies, which rather promote disputes than the gospel-dispensation:
