For there are many disorderly persons, vain-talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision; whose mouths must be stopped: who subvert whole families, teaching what they ought not, for shameful gain:
to slander no man, to avoid contention, to be gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.
If any among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his heart, this man's devotion is vain.
So the tongue is a small part of the body, yet boasteth great things. Behold how much fuel a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our several parts, defiling the whole body, inflaming the course of nature, and is set on fire by hell. For every kind of wild beasts, and birds, and reptiles, and fishes, is tamed and hath been tamed by mankind:read more.
but the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless God even the Father; and with it we curse men, who are made after the likeness of God: out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. These things, my brethren, ought not so to be.
Speak not against one another, my brethren; he that speaketh against his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh against the law, and judgeth the law; but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.
What! know ye not that the unjust shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the effeminate, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor rapacious persons, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
Their throat is an open sepulchre: with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
Wherefore putting away lying, speak ye every one truth to his neighbor; for we are all members of one society.
Let no corrupt word come out of your mouth; but what is good to useful edification, that it may benefit the hearers. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God whereby ye are sealed to the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and fury, and clamor, and calumny, be put away from you, with all malice: and be kind one to another,
nor ribaldry, nor buffoonery, nor wanton jesting, which are not meet: but rather giving of thanks.
