That we may be no longer children fluctuating and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the artful insinuations of men, and their crafty methods of deceiving;
This charge I commit to thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which before came on thee, that by them thou mightest war a good warfare, having faith and a good conscience, which some putting away have made shipwreck concerning the faith: of whom is Hymeneus and Alexander, whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.
But avoid prophane empty harangues; for they will proceed to more impiety, and their discourse will eat like a gangrene. Of whom is Hymeneus and Philetus; who have erred from the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and subvert the faith of some.
For there are many disorderly persons, vain-talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision; whose mouths must be stopped: who subvert whole families, teaching what they ought not, for shameful gain:
be not then carried about by various and strange doctrines; for it is good that the heart be established by grace, and not in meats, in which those that have been most exact, have not profited by them.
Do ye therefore, beloved, as ye know these things before, take heed least being seduced together with them by the error of the wicked, ye should fall from your own stedfastness.
Now I exhort you, brethren, to mark those who cause divisions and offences, contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned: and avoid them; for such people serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by a soothing address and good words deceive the hearts of the innocent.
As I exhorted thee to stay at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge certain persons not to teach other doctrine, nor attend to fables and endless genealogies, which occasion debates, rather than pious edification in the faith:
But tho' we or an angel from heaven should preach to you any other gospel than what we have preached to you; let him be accursed. I say it again, if any one preach to you any other gospel than what ye have received, let him be accursed.
But there were indeed false prophets among the people of old, as there will be also among you false teachers, who will privately introduce pernicious heresies, denying even the Lord that bought them, and bringing upon themselves swift destruction,
