‘You shall rise before the gray-headed and honor the aged, and you shall fear your God [with profound reverence]; I am the Lord.
Listen to your father, who sired you,
And do not despise your mother when she is old.
Do not sharply reprimand an older man, but appeal to him as [you would to] a father, to younger men as brothers,
The young men saw me and hid themselves,
The aged arose and stood [respectfully];
to older women as mothers, to younger women as sisters, in all purity [being careful to maintain appropriate relationships].
Likewise, you younger men [of lesser rank and experience], be subject to your elders [seek their counsel]; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another [tie on the servant’s apron], for God is opposed to the proud [the disdainful, the presumptuous, and He defeats them], but He gives grace to the humble.
The silver-haired head is a crown of splendor and glory;
It is found in the way of righteousness.
The glory of young men is their [physical] strength,
And the honor of aged men is their gray head [representing wisdom and experience].
Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in steadfastness [Christlike in character].
