Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be arrogant or to set their hope on the uncertainty of wealth, but on God, who richly provides us with all things to enjoy.
For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from the fathers, not with perishable things, like silver or gold,
As soon as your eyes fly to it, it disappears, for it makes wings for itself and flies like an eagle to the sky.
saying: Woe, woe, the great city, clothed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet, adorned with gold, precious stones, and pearls; because in a single hour such fabulous wealth was destroyed! And every shipmaster, seafarer, the sailors, and all who do business by sea, stood far off
Now the one sown among the thorns-this is one who hears the word, but the worries of this age and the seduction of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
"Don't collect for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.
Won't all of these take up a taunt against him, with mockery and riddles about him? They will say: Woe to him who amasses what is not his- how much longer?- and loads himself with goods taken in pledge.
