esteeming the sufferings of Israel greater riches than the treasures of Egypt: for he had an eye to the reward.

no man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or he will be attach'd to the one, and neglectful of the other. ye cannot serve God and Mamon.

a servant cannot serve two masters: for either he will neglect the one, and attend the other; or he will be attached to the first, and misbehave to the last. you cannot serve God and mammon.

I advise you in like manner to lay out your fallacious treasure in acts of charity, that when you die, they may secure to you everlasting habitations.

if therefore your fidelity has not appear'd in the use of these transitory enjoyments, how can you be trusted with what is more lasting?

Lay not up for your selves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal.

then said Jesus to his disciples, I declare unto you, it will be difficult for a rich man to enter into the gospel kingdom. but Jesus looking at them, said, however impracticable this is to men, all things are possible to God.

then Jesus looking round about, said to his disciples, how difficult a thing is it for those who have riches to enter into the gospel kingdom! at this expression the disciples were much surpriz'd. but Jesus reassum'd the discourse, and said, how difficult a thing is it for those, who place their trust in riches, to enter into the divine kingdom? it is easier for a cable to pass thro' the eye of a needle, than for such a rich man to enter into the divine kingdom. read more.
at this they were more amazed than before, and said to one another, how then can such a man be saved? but Jesus casting his eye upon them, said, what is impossible to men, is not so to God; for to God all things are possible.

Jesus perceiving him so very dejected, said, how difficult is it for those, who have riches, to enter into the kingdom of God! it is easier for a cable to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. upon which the audience said, who then can be saved? read more.
Jesus answer'd, by divine assistance men may do that which would be otherwise impossible.

for you are sensible of the beneficence of our Lord Jesus Christ; powerful as he was, for your sake he became poor, that you through his poverty might be made rich.

Charge those that are rich in this world, not to be elated, not to depend upon their perishable wealth, but upon the God of life, who furnishes us with every thing in plenty for our enjoyment;

to which purpose he propos'd to them this parable: a rich man had some land that was very fruitful. and thus he reason'd with himself, what shall I do for want of room to store up my crop? this will I do, said he, I will pull down my barns, and build greater: and there I will bestow all my rich product. read more.

at length the beggar died: and was conveyed by the angels to Abraham's bower. the rich man died too, and was buried. and being in the infernal regions of torments, he lift up his eyes, and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bower. and he cry'd out, saying, father Abraham, take pity on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water to cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. but Abraham said, son, remember you had your enjoyments, when you were alive, and Lazarus his misfortunes: but now he has his consolation, and you your torments. besides this, there is an unalterable chasm between us and you, so that the passage from one place to the other is impracticable to those who should attempt it. upon which he said, father, I beg it of you, that you would send him to my father's family, where I have five brothers, to give them warning, lest they also come into this place of torment. but Abraham replied, they have Moses and the prophets, let them mind them. no, father Abraham, said he, they will not: but if any of the dead went to them, they will certainly repent. Abraham replied, if they disregard Moses and the prophets, they will not believe any one, though he rose from the dead.

but Peter said unto him, thy money perish with thee, for thinking that the gift of God may be purchased with money.

Charge those that are rich in this world, not to be elated, not to depend upon their perishable wealth, but upon the God of life, who furnishes us with every thing in plenty for our enjoyment; to be beneficent, to be rich in good works, to be liberal to the common fund, securing to themselves a well-grounded expectation of obtaining hereafter an immortal life.

which some having obtain'd, have revolted from the faith, and brought upon themselves variety of piercing pains.

Then one of the company said to him, order my brother to give me my share of our inheritance. but Jesus answer'd him, who made me a judge, or an arbitrator between you? then he said to them, take care to be clear of all avarice: for the enjoyment of life does not depend upon the having large possessions.
