Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave clothes: and his face was bound about with a cloth. Jesus said unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
However Jesus spoke of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
(It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom you love is sick.
And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent you may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, said unto him, Lord, by this time he stinks: for he has been dead four days.
But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;
When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.
These things said he: and after that he said unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleeps; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
Then he said, I pray you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house:
The people therefore that were with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bore record.
Many people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.
For I have five brothers; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
And in hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and seeing Abraham far off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Jesus said unto her, Said I not unto you, that, if you would believe, you should see the glory of God?
Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.
And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
And I knew that you hear me always: but because of the people who stand by I said it, that they may believe that you have sent me.
There was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and feasted sumptuously every day:
Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!

The people therefore that were with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bore record. For this cause the people also met him, for they heard that he had done this miracle.

If any man walks in the day, he stumbles not, because he sees the light of this world. But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because there is no light in him. These things said he: and after that he said unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleeps; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleeps, he shall do well. However Jesus spoke of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
