Then He will speak to them in His [profound] angerAnd terrify them with His displeasure, saying,

Arise, O Lord, in Your anger;Lift up Yourself against the rage of my enemies;Rise up for me; You have commanded judgment and vindication.

You will make them as [if in] a blazing oven in the time of your anger;The Lord will swallow them up in His wrath,And the fire will devour them.

Do not hide Your face from me,Do not turn Your servant away in anger;You have been my help;Do not abandon me nor leave me,O God of my salvation!

Pour out Your indignation on them,And let [the fierceness of] Your burning anger overtake them.

You, even You, are to be feared [with the submissive wonder of reverence];Who may stand in Your presence when once You are angry?

But He, the source of compassion and lovingkindness, forgave their wickedness and did not destroy them;Many times He restrained His angerAnd did not stir up all His wrath.

He leveled a path for His anger [to give it free run];He did not spare their souls from death,But turned over their lives to the plague.

For they provoked Him to [righteous] anger with their high places [devoted to idol worship]And moved Him to jealousy with their carved images [by denying Him the love, worship, and obedience that is rightfully and uniquely His].

You have withdrawn all Your wrath,You have turned away from Your burning anger.

Restore us, O God of our salvation,And cause Your indignation toward us to cease.

Will You be angry with us forever?Will You prolong Your anger to all generations?

But You, O Lord, are a God [who protects and is] merciful and gracious,Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness and truth.

For we have been consumed by Your angerAnd by Your wrath we have been terrified.

Who understands the power of Your anger? [Who connects this brevity of life among us with Your judgment of sin?]And Your wrath, [who connects it] with the [reverent] fear that is due You?

Turn, O Lord [from Your fierce anger]; how long will it be?Be compassionate toward Your servants—revoke Your sentence.

Thus they provoked Him to anger with their practices,And a plague broke out among them.
