'Census' in the Bible
“When you take a census of the Israelites to register them, each of the men must pay a ransom for himself to the Lord as they are registered. Then no plague will come on them as they are registered.
“Take a census of the entire Israelite community by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of every male one by one.
“Do not register or take a census of the tribe of Levi with the other Israelites.
Here is a summary of the census of the Israelis according to the tribes of their ancestral houses: All the divisions in the camps numbered 603,550,
You are to pay a ransom for the 273 first-born Israelis who exceed the census number of the descendants of Levi,
“Among the Levites, take a census of the Kohathites by their clans and their ancestral houses,
“Take a census of the Gershonites also, by their ancestral houses and their clans.
Then the presiding leaders of Israel, as heads of the ancestral houses, brought an offering. They were the leaders of the tribes who supervised the census.
Your corpses will fall in this wilderness—all of you who were registered in the census, the entire number of you 20 years old or more—because you have complained about Me.
“Take a census of the entire Israelite community by their ancestral houses of those 20 years old or more who can serve in Israel’s army.”
“Take a census of those 20 years old or more, as the Lord had commanded Moses and the Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt.”
and told him, “Your servants have taken a census of the fighting men under our command, and not one of us is missing.
since when they took a census of the assembly, not even one of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead was in attendance.
Later, God's anger blazed forth against Israel, so he incited David to move against them by telling him, "Go take a census of Israel and Judah."

Then Satan attacked Israel by inciting David to enumerate a census of Israel.
David ordered Joab and the commanders of the army, "Go take a census of Israel from Beer-sheba to Dan, and bring me a report so I can be aware of the total number."
Joab gave the number of the census of all the people to David. And all Israel were 1,100,000 men who drew the sword; and Judah was 470,000 men who drew the sword.
Levi and Benjamin were not included in the census, because what the king had commanded was unethical to Joab.
David told God, "Wasn't I the one who ordered the census of the population? Wasn't it I who sinned and acted wickedly? Now as for these sheep, what have they done? LORD God, please let your hand be against me and my ancestral household, but don't let your people be ravaged by plague!"
The Levites were numbered from thirty years old and upward, and their number by census of men was 38,000.
These were the sons of Levi according to their fathers’ households, even the heads of the fathers’ households of those of them who were counted, in the number of names by their census, doing the work for the service of the house of the Lord, from twenty years old and upward.
David did not complete a census of those younger than 20 years of age, since the LORD had said he would make Israel as numerous as the stars of heaven.
Joab son of Zeruiah began to count them, but he didn’t complete it. There was wrath against Israel because of this census, and the number was not entered in the Historical Record of King David.
Solomon took a census of all the foreign men in the land of Israel, after the census that his father David had conducted, and the total was 153,600.
Moreover, Amaziah assembled Judah and appointed them according to their fathers’ households under commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds throughout Judah and Benjamin; and he took a census of those from twenty years old and upward and found them to be 300,000 choice men, able to go to war and handle spear and shield.
The Lord writes in the census book of the nations, "This one was born there." (Selah)
But it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census should be made of all the habitable world.
The census itself first took place when Cyrenius had the government of Syria.
And all went to be inscribed in the census roll, each to his own city:
to be inscribed in the census roll with Mary who was betrothed to him as his wife, she being great with child.
