The angel of Jehovah called to Abraham from heaven a second time.


The angel of Jehovah found Hagar near a spring in the desert. It was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.

The angel of God, who had been going before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them. The pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them.

The donkey saw the angel of Jehovah standing in the road with his sword drawn. The donkey turned off the road into a field. Balaam hit the donkey to get it back on the road.

An angel of Jehovah came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said: I led you out of Egypt and brought you to the land about which I swore to your fathers that I would never break my covenant with you.

When the angel of Jehovah spoke these words to all the children of Israel the people wept loudly.

I will establish my covenant between us. I will greatly increase your numbers.

I also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they lived as foreigners.

Tell Phinehas that I now make a promise of peace to him.

I will choose one of your sons to be king when you reach the end of your life and are buried in the tomb of your ancestors. I will make him a strong ruler.

I will keep my loving kindness for him forevermore. My covenant will stand firm with him.

Jehovah your God is a merciful God. He will not forsake you. He will not destroy you, nor forget the covenant he made with your fathers.

You are a holy people to Jehovah your God. Jehovah your God has chosen you to be his own special people out of all the nations of the earth. Jehovah set his heart on you. He chose you, even though you did not outnumber all the other people. You were the smallest of all nations. You were chosen because Jehovah loved you and kept the oath he swore to your fathers. So he used his mighty hand to bring you out. He freed you from slavery under Pharaoh king of Egypt.

He will call to me: You are my Father, My God, and the rock of my salvation! I will also appoint him my firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth. I will keep my loving kindness for him forevermore. My covenant will stand firm with him. read more.
I will make his descendants endure forever and his throne like the days of heaven. If his descendants abandon my law and do not live by my rules, if they violate my statutes and do not obey my commandments, then with a rod I will punish their transgression and their crimes with beatings. But I will not take my loving kindness away from him or allow my truth to become perverted. I will not dishonor my promise or alter my own agreement.

He provides food for those who reverence him. He always remembers his covenant. He has revealed the power of his works to his people by giving them the lands of other nations as an inheritance. His works are done with truth and justice. All his guiding principles are trustworthy. They last (are upheld) forever and ever. They are carried out with truth and decency. He has sent deliverance to his people. He has ordered that his covenant should continue forever. His name is holy and awesome.


You will give truth to Jacob, and show loving-kindness (unchanging love) to Abraham. For you have sworn this to our fathers from the days of old.

Even when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them or look at them with disgust. I will not reject or cancel my promise to them, because I am Jehovah their God. Deal with them in this way: Destroy their altars and break down their sacred pillars. Cut down their idols and burn them with fire.

Do not worship or serve their gods or follow their practices. You must destroy their gods and crush their sacred stones.

Remove the foreign gods you have. He demanded: Pledge your loyalty to Jehovah, the God of Israel.

I will force out the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. You must do what I command you today. As you advance, force out all the people who live there. Get rid of all their stone and metal idols, and destroy all their places of worship.

Destroy all the places where the nations you dispossess serve their gods, on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree. Tear down their altars and smash their sacred pillars. Burn their Asherah poles with fire. Cut down the carved images of their gods and obliterate their name from that place.

Why are you going to Egypt to drink water from the Nile (Shihor) River? You will not gain anything by going to Assyria to drink water from the Euphrates River.

A fool's lips want to argue. His mouth calls for blows. A fool's mouth is his ruin. His lips are the snares of his life.

Instead, they intermarried with other nations. They learned to do what other nations did. They worshiped their idols, which became a trap for them.

Destroy all the peoples whom Jehovah your God gives you. Do not look at them with pity. Do not serve their gods. For that would be a snare to you.

I will make the borders of your land extend from the Gulf of Aqaba to the Mediterranean Sea and from the desert to the Euphrates River. I will give you power over the inhabitants of the land. You will drive them out as you advance. Do not make any agreement with them or with their gods. Do not allow them to live in your land for they will make you sin against me. If you serve their gods it will be a snare to you.

I will force out the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. You must do what I command you today. Watch yourself that you make no covenant with the inhabitants of the land into which you are going. It will become a snare in your midst.

Take heed of yourselves to love Jehovah your God. If you are disloyal and join with the nations that are still left among you and intermarry with them, Jehovah your God will no longer drive these nations out as you advance. Rather, they will be as dangerous for you as a trap or a pit and as painful as a whip on your back or thorns in your eyes. This will last until none of you are left in this good land that Jehovah your God gave you.
