and having summoned together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he enquired of them where the Messiah was to be born: and they told him, at Bethlehem in Judea;

but when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonders that He wrought, and the children crying out in the temple, Hosanna to the Son of David, they were vexed to the heart, and said to Him, Dost thou hear what these say?

And from that time began Jesus to acquaint his disciples, that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, and chief priests, and scribes; and be put to death, and be raised again on the third day.

And on one of those days as He was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes and elders came upon Him, saying, Tell us by what authority thou dost these things? or who it is that gave thee this authority?

And when the chief priests and pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that He spake of them: and would have seized Him, but that they were afraid of the people; because they took Him for a prophet.

And the chief priests and the scribes would have laid hands on Him at that very time, but were afraid of the people: for they perceived that He had spoken this parable against them.

Now the pharisees heard the people murmuring these things concerning Him: and they, with the chief priests, sent officers to seize Him.

Now the feast of the passover and unleavened bread was within two days: and the chief priests and the scribes were contriving how they might seize Him by treachery and put Him to death.

Now the chief priests and elders, and the whole council sought false-witness against Jesus, that they might put Him to death: but found none.

About this time went one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot,

But the chief priests took up the pieces of silver, and said, It is not lawful to put them into the treasury of the temple, because it is the price of blood:

And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing.

But Pilate said to the chief priests, and to the people, I find nothing criminal in this man.

When the chief priests therefore and the officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, "Crucify Him, crucify Him." Pilate saith unto them, Take Him yourselves, and crucify Him: for I find no fault in Him.

And in like manner the chief priests also insulting Him, with the scribes and elders,

And the chief priests likewise scoffing at Him among themselves, with the scribes, said, He saved others, Himself He cannot save: let Christ,

(for he knew that the chief priests had delivered Him up to him out of envy:)

how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him.

Pilate replied, Am I a Jew? thine own nation, and the chief priests, have delivered thee to me: what hast thou done?

Now the next day after the preparation, the chief priests and pharisees went together to Pilate, saying, Sir, we remember that this impostor, when He was alive, said, After three days I will rise again: order therefore the sepulchre to be secured till the third day, least his disciples should come and steal Him away, and tell the people, He is risen from the dead: and so the last error will be worse than the first.read more.
But Pilate said to them, Ye have a guard of your own, go and make it as secure as ye will. So they went and made the sepulchre safe, sealing the stone, and setting a guard to watch it.

Now while they were going, behold some of the guard came into the city, and told the chief priests all that had happened: and they assembled with the elders, and taking counsel together gave the soldiers a large sum of money, saying, Do you say, that his disciples came by night, and stole Him away, while we were asleep.read more.
And if this should come to a hearing before the governor, we will satisfy him, and indemnify you. So they took the money, and did as they were instructed: and this is commonly reported among the Jews to this day.

Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Cesar.

Being dismissed they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them.

Now when the high priest, and the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these words, they were in doubt concerning them, what this would come to;

and here too he hath authority from the chief priests to apprehend all that call upon thy name.
