And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up: and according to his custom He went into the synagogue on the sabbath-day, and stood up to read. And there was delivered to Him the book of the prophet Esaias; and opening the book, He found the place where it was written,

And among those that came up to worship at the feast there were certain Greeks:

Now there were at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.

And he arose and went; and behold a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, and her high-treasurer, who had come to Jerusalem to worship,

Now the chief priests and elders, and the whole council sought false-witness against Jesus, that they might put Him to death: but found none. And tho' many false witnesses came, they found none to their purpose. But at last came two false witnesses and said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.

At last there rose up some and bare false witness against Him, saying, We heard Him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands:

and they set up false witnesses; who said, This man is continually speaking blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law.

But when the seven days were near ended, the Jews that came from Asia seeing him in the temple, raised a tumult among the people, and laid hands on him, crying out, Men of Israel, help: this is the man that teaches all men every where against the people of the Jews, and the law, and this sacred place? and besides, hath brought Greeks too into the temple, and polluted this holy place. (For they had before seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with him, whom they thought Paul had brought into the temple.)

Ye search the scriptures; for ye think that in them ye have eternal life:

Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites, who tithe even your mint, and anise, and cummin, but neglect the weightier matters of the law, judgement, mercy, and fidelity: these ye ought undoubtedly to practise, and not to omit the others.

For whosoever shall keep the whole law besides, but offend in one point, he is under the penalty of all:

Wo unto you, ye blind guides, who say, If any one swear by the temple, it is nothing; but if any man swear by the gold of the temple, the oath is binding. Foolish and blind creatures! for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? And, If any one swear by the altar, it is nothing; but if any one swear by the gift upon it, he is bound.

And there were gathered unto Him the pharisees, and some of the scribes, from Jerusalem; and when they saw some of his disciples eating with impure (that is, unwashed) hands, they found fault: for the pharisees, and indeed all the Jews, do not eat till they have washed their hands thoroughly, observing the tradition of the ancients.read more.
And when they come from the market, they do not eat till they have washed. And there are many other things, which they have received to observe, as the washing of cups, and pots, and brass-vessels, and seats. Then the pharisees and the scribes ask Him, Why do not thy disciples walk according to the tradition of the ancients, but eat without washing their hands? But He answered them, Well did Esaias prophesy concerning you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me: and in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the injunctions of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye retain the tradition of men, as the washings of pots and cups, and many other such like things. And ye expressly annul the commandment of God, that ye may retain your own tradition; for Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, He that revileth father or mother, let him be put to death: but ye say, If a man tell his father or mother, That which thou mightest be profited by from me is Corban, (that is, a gift to the temple) it sufficeth: and so ye allow him to do nothing more for his father or his mother: making void the word of God by your tradition,. And many such like things ye do.

Then came to Jesus the scribes and pharisees from Jerusalem saying, Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat. But He answered and said unto them, And why do ye transgress the commandment of God for your tradition?read more.

About this time as Jesus passed through the cornfields on the sabbath-day, his disciples being hungry began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat them. And when the pharisees saw it they said to Him, See, thy disciples are doing what is not lawful for them to do on the sabbath.

And as He was going thro' the corn-fields on the sabbath-day, his disciples began as they went along to pluck the ears of corn. And the pharisees said to Him, See, why do they what is not lawful to be done on the sabbath-day?

And it came to pass on the second-sabbath after the first, that as He was passing through the corn-fields, his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and rubbed them in their hands and ate them. And some of the pharisees said to them, Why do ye do that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath-days?

for the pharisees, and indeed all the Jews, do not eat till they have washed their hands thoroughly, observing the tradition of the ancients. And when they come from the market, they do not eat till they have washed. And there are many other things, which they have received to observe, as the washing of cups, and pots, and brass-vessels, and seats.

And when the pharisee saw it he wondered that He did not wash first, before dinner.

Two men went up to the temple to pray; the one a pharisee and the other a publican. The pharisee standing by himself prayed thus, O God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are, rapacious, unjust, adulterous, or even as this publican. I fast twice a week, and I give tithes of all that I possess.

knowing me before, (if they would testify it,) that according to the strictest sect of our religion I lived a pharisee.

Then the high priest rose up, and all that were with him, (being of the sect of the sadducees,) and were filled with rage:

But when he saw many of the pharisees and sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Then come the sadducees to Him, who say there is no resurrection;

On the same day came the sadducees to Him, who say there is no resurrection,

And some of the Sadducees (who deny a resurrection) came to Him and asked Him,

And his disciples asked Him, saying, Why then do the scribes say, that Elias must first come?

And when He came to the other disciples, He saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes disputing with them.

and after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, attending to them and asking them questions.

And on the morrow their rulers, and elders, and scribes were gathered together at Jerusalem:

Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, and Simon called Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James,

Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites: for ye compass sea and land to make a proselyte, and when he is gained, ye make him more the child of hell than yourselves.

And the advice pleased the whole multitude, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith, and of the holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus a proselyte of Antioch.

And when the synagogue was broken up, many of the Jews and of the devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas; who addressing themselves to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

Now the feast of the passover and unleavened bread was within two days: and the chief priests and the scribes were contriving how they might seize Him by treachery and put Him to death.

Therefore many of the Jews, that came to Mary and saw what Jesus did, believed on Him. But some of them went to the pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. Therefore the chief priests and the pharisees held a council and said, What are we doing? for this man worketh many miracles.read more.
If we suffer Him to go on thus, all the people will believe on Him, and the Romans will come and destroy both our place and nation. But Caiaphas who was one of them, being high-priest that year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all; nor do ye consider, that it is better for us that one man should die for the people, than that the whole nation should perish.

for they will excommunicate you: yea, the time is coming, that whosoever killeth you, will think that he offers an acceptable service to God.

And while they were speaking to the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the sadducees came upon them, being vexed that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead. And they laid hands on them, and put them into custody till the next day: for it was now evening.

Then the high priest rose up, and all that were with him, (being of the sect of the sadducees,) and were filled with rage: and laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the public prison.

For ye have heard of my conversation formerly in Judaism, that I outragiously persecuted the church of God, and laid it waste: and I made a proficiency in Judaism above many of the same age with me in my own nation, being excessively zealous for the traditions of my fathers.

But there rose up, said they, some of the sect of the pharisees that believed, saying, that it was necessary to circumcise them, and enjoin them to keep the law of Moses.

Now some that came down from Judea, taught the brethren, saying, Except ye be circumcised according to the law of Moses, ye cannot be saved. A dissension therefore arising, and Paul and Barnabas having no small dispute with them, it was resolved that Paul and Barnabas, and some others, should go up to the apostles and elders at Jerusalem about this question.

But when Peter came to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was indeed to be blamed. For before certain men came from James, he did eat with the gentiles; but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those of the circumcision. And the rest of the Jews dissembled also with him; so that Barnabas too was carried away with their dissimulation.read more.
But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all,---If thou, who art a Jew, livest sometimes after the manner of the gentiles, and not like the Jews, why dost thou now in a manner compel the gentiles to judaize? We, who are Jews by birth, and not sinners of the gentiles, knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
