But Pilate said to them, Ye have a guard of your own, go and make it as secure as ye will. So they went and made the sepulchre safe, sealing the stone, and setting a guard to watch it.
And he went and conferred with the chief priests and the captains, how he might betray Him unto them.
And when the centurion, and they that were with him guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake, and what was done, they were sore afraid, and said, This was indeed the Son of God.
And there were in the same country shepherds out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night: and lo,
Then said Jesus to the chief priests, and officers of the temple, and elders, that were come to Him, Are ye come out as against a robber with swords and clubs?
And while they were speaking to the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the sadducees came upon them,
whom he seized and put into prison, delivering him to four quaternions of soldiers to guard him; intending, after the passover, to bring him out to the people.
And when they had given them many stripes, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely.
And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also stood by and consented to his death, and kept the clothes of them that slew him.
I will hear thee, when thine accusers are also come. And he ordered him to be kept in Herod's palace.
And he commanded the centurion to keep Paul secure, and to let him have some liberty, and to hinder none of his friends from assisting him or coming to him.
And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was permitted to live by himself with the soldier that had him in custody.
so that my bonds are manifest in all the palace, and all other places, to be for the sake of Christ;
for if ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet ye have not many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you by the gospel.
Take heed to thyself, and to thy doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this, thou wilt both save thyself and those that hear thee.
and therefore when Jesus said to them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the pharisees and of the sadducees,
Be watchful, stand fast in the faith, behave like men, be strong:
And the peace of God, which surpasseth all understanding, shall guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Do ye therefore, beloved, as ye know these things before, take heed least being seduced together with them by the error of the wicked, ye should fall from your own stedfastness.
Behold we put bridles into the mouths of horses, that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body as we please. Behold also the ships which are of so great bulk, and even when they are driven by hard winds, yet are turned about by a very small helm which way soever the pilot pleaseth. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our several parts, defiling the whole body, inflaming the course of nature, and is set on fire by hell. For every kind of wild beasts, and birds, and reptiles, and fishes, is tamed and hath been tamed by mankind: but the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
And from among yourselves shall men arise, speaking perverse things to draw away disciples after them. Watch therefore, remembering that for the space of three years I ceased not by night and by day to warn every one with tears.
O Timothy, keep that with which thou art entrusted, avoiding profane empty babblings, and the oppositions of science falsely so called:
Alexander the brazier did me many ill turns: the Lord will reward him according to his deeds. Of whom do thou also beware: for he hath greatly opposed our doctrine.
Take heed therefore to yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the holy Spirit hath appointed you bishops, to feed the church of God, which He purchased with his own blood. For I know this, that after my departure grievous wolves will enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Be ruled by those that are your guides, and submit to them: for they watch for your souls; (as those that must give an account) that they may do it with joy and not with uneasiness: for this were unprofitable for you.
taking the episcopal charge of it, not by constraint, but willingly; not for shameful lucre, but with a ready mind:
