For as I was passing through, and looking attentively at the objects of your worship, I dis covered also an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore you ignorantly worship, him I make known to you.

You worship you know not what; we know what we worship; for salvation is of the Jews.

But all these things they will do to you on my account, because they know not him that sent me.

But, then, because you knew not God, you were enslaved to those who, by nature, are not gods:

darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart;

At that time Jesus answered and said: I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son, but the Father; nor does any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.

In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said: I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to babes; even so, Father, for so it seemed good in thy sight. And Jesus answered and said to him: Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah; for flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

And lo, a voice from heaven, saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I delight.
