for at the appointed time Christ died for us, when we were in a helpless, sinful state. now for a wicked man no one would willingly die; but for a benefactor some have readily offer'd to die. but herein hath God displayed his love towards us, in that Christ died for us, even while we were yet sinners.

What do we say then? is there injustice in God? God forbid. for he saith to Moses, "I will show favour to whom I will show favour, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion." so that this is a matter not dependent on him that wills or runs, but on God, who shews mercy.

who has by his blood obtained for us the redemption, even the forgiveness of our sins, according to the riches of his grace,

it is a proposition worthy to be believ'd, and be embrac'd by all, that Jesus Christ is come into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the greatest. however I obtained mercy, that Jesus Christ might demonstrate the greatness of his clemency, by making me an eminent instance of it to those who should hereafter believe in him, in order to eternal life.

salvation is not to be had by any other: for there is no other name under heaven given to men whereby we can be saved.

things that little affect me, nor is life so much my concern, as to finish my course, and the charge I receiv'd from the Lord Jesus, to attest the declaration of the divine favour.

the type of him that was to come: but yet the damage of the fall does not exactly correspond to the advantages of the divine favour: for tho' through the fall of one, mankind became mortal, yet this is greatly over-ballanced by the favour and bounty of God, in the benevolence of one man, Jesus Christ, to all mankind. neither is the gift, as was the fall by one sin: for the sentence of condemnation, was for one offence; but the divine favour extends to justification from a multitude of sins. for tho' death reigned thro' the single offence of one, they who receive the most valuable favour, even the gift of righteousness, shall much more easily reign by the life of one, even Jesus Christ.

for he saith, " I have heard thee in a favourable time, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee." now this is the favourable time; this is that day of salvation.

who has deliver'd you from the state of darkness, and has translated you into the kingdom of his beloved son. It is by him, that we have obtain'd the redemption, even the remission of our sins:

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ, and God our father, who has loved us, and by his favour given us the advantageous hopes of eternal joys, consolate your souls,

For the divine savour has display'd its salutary effects to all mankind:

besides, the priesthood then devolv'd to many, death depriving them of a lasting possession. but he, by virtue of his immortal state, hath a priesthood that does not pass by succession. so that he has an uninterrupted power to save those, that come to God by him, because he ever lives to make intercession for them.

They cried with a loud voice, "salvation from our God who sits upon the throne, and unto the lamb.'

but when the kindness and love of God our saviour display'd itself to mankind, he saved us not in consideration of any virtuous actions which we had done, but out of his meer mercy, by the baptism of regeneration, he form'd us anew, by the plentiful effusion of the holy spirit, thro' Jesus Christ our saviour:read more.
that being justified by his favour, we should have the inheritance of eternal life, according to our hopes.

Then he propos'd this parable, concerning those who had a great opinion of their own justice, and look'd with contempt upon others. two men went to the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, the other a Publican. the Pharisee in a standing posture pray'd thus by himself, O God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men, a robber, a cheat, an adulterer, or like that Publican.read more.
I fast twice a week, and I pay the tythe of all I possess. but the Publican, who stood a good way lower, not daring to lift up even his eyes to heaven, only smote his breast, and said, O God, be merciful to me, who am a sinner. I tell you this man went home approv'd as just, and not the other. for whoever exalteth himself shall be humbled, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

in like manner at this time there is also a remnant chosen by the divine favour; and if it be by favour, it is not upon the account of merit. for then mercy would not be mercy.

Christ is of no use to you, whoever of you seek to be justified by the law; you have lost all interest in the gospel-dispensation.

the law was introduc'd, that the greatness of the fall might fully appear; but the more sin display'd its enormity, the divine favour was so much the more transcendent. that as sin prevailed unto death, even so might the divine favour prevail by righteousness unto eternal life, thro' Jesus Christ our Lord.

for then sin shall have no dominion over you: because you are not under the legal, but under the gospel dispensation.

Sentence of death therefore shall not pass upon those christians who do not lead a vicious life. for the christian dispensation of a spiritual life has set me free from the legal state of sin and death. God having sent his own son invested with a body like that of sinful men, as a sacrifice for sin, thereby destroyed its power; which the law could not effect, human nature being in such a corrupted state.read more.
so that the moral obligations of the law might be fulfilled by us, in living according to the spiritual, and not the carnal tenor thereof:

I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if justification be by the law, Christ died to no purpose.

this therefore I say, that the law, which was not till four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul the promise, that was ratified before by God, so as to set the promise afoot. now if the right to the inheritance be from the law, it is no longer founded upon the promise; altho' God made a donation of it to Abraham by promise.

it being plain, that the law was not design'd against the just, but against the lawless and refractory, against irreligion and vice, impiety and prophaneness, parricide and man-slaughter,

then it was that God, who is rich in mercy, thro' his great love, wherewith he loved us, did raise us all, who were in that deadly state of sin, to life by Christ, for by grace ye are saved: he hath raised us up together, and made us partakers of his heavenly kingdom.read more.
that in the ages to come, he might shew the immense riches of his gracious kindness towards us, through Christ Jesus. for by grace are ye saved, thro' faith (and that not from us: it is the gift of God) but not by works, so that no man can boast:

but the divine justification certified by the law and the prophets, is now clearly proposed independently of the law: that divine justification, which by faith in Jesus Christ is extended to all, that believe; for there is no distinction: for all having sinned, all have forfeited eternal glory:read more.
being justified by his unmerited favour through the redemption that is by Jesus Christ:

for if they only who are of the law have right of possession, faith is made useless, and the promise becomes of no effect. because the effect of the law is punishment: for if there had been no law, there could have been no transgression. therefore the inheritance is of faith, that it might be meerly of favour, to the end the promise might be assured to all his posterity, not to that part only who have the law, but to that also who have the faith of Abraham, the father of us all, as it is written,

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us access by faith to that degree of favour, we are in, by which we triumph in the hopes of divine glory.

us therefore approach with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may obtain the seasonable assistance of divine mercy and favour.
