and I will shew prodigies in the heavens, and signs on the earth; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke. the sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and illustrious day of the Lord shall come.

who was destin'd before the creation of the world, tho' 'tis of late only that he has appear'd, upon your account:

God sent forth his own son born of a woman, and subject to the law, to redeem those, who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

"the time, said he, is accomplish'd, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel."

but if I exorcize devils by the spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is set up among you.

but if I cast out demons by the finger of God, it follows, that the reign of the Messiah is now begun among you.

he said to them, I must likewise proclaim the kingdom of God in other cities; for to that end am I sent.

After this Jesus went about, preaching to every city and village, proclaiming the reign of the Messias, attended by his twelve apostles,

"the spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to proclaim the favourable year of the Lord." then he closed the book, and returning it to the minister, he sat down: and as the eyes of the whole synagogue were fix'd with attention upon him,read more.
he undertook to show them, how the passage they had heard, was actually then accomplished.

Jesus answered them, go and relate to John, what you hear and what you see: the blind recover their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

then he gave them this answer, go, and tell John what you have seen, and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are healed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the gospel is proclaim'd to the poor.

but this is the accomplishment of what was said by the prophet Joel, "it shall come to pass in the last days (saith God) I will pour out of my spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men dream dreams: and on my servants, and on my handmaidens I will pour out of my spirit in those days, and they shall prophesy:

God who at sundry times, and in divers manners, spake in time past to the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his SON, whom he hath constituted heir of all things, by whom also be made the world.

but happy are you that your eyes have sight; and that your ears have their hearing. for I declare unto you, that many prophets and just men have desired to see what ye see, and have not seen it: and to hear what ye hear, and have not heard it.

then addressing himself to his disciples in particular, he said, happy are they, who see what you see: for I assure you, that many prophets and princes have desired to see what you now behold, but they never saw it; and to hear what you have heard, which they never did.

Now to him that is able to establish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, conformable to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret from antient times, but now is laid open, and by the writings of the prophets (according to the commandment of the eternal God) made known to all the Gentiles, to induce them to obey the faith:

and display to all the world that mysterious dispensation, which from all past ages has been conceal'd in the secret purpose of God, who created all things:

that mystery, which has been hid from ages and generations, but is now made manifest to his saints:

for then must he have suffered several times since the beginning of the world, when in the consummation of the ages, he has appeared once for all to expiate sin by offering himself as a sacrifice.

and then whoever shall call on the name of the Lord, shall be saved."

for he saith, " I have heard thee in a favourable time, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee." now this is the favourable time; this is that day of salvation.

considering, that it was not by such perishable things as silver or gold, that you were releas'd from those vain rites and customs impos'd upon you by your fathers, but by the precious blood of Christ, who is the lamb without spot, and without blemish: who was destin'd before the creation of the world, tho' 'tis of late only that he has appear'd, upon your account:

Take notice that in the latter days difficult incidents will arise; for men will be selfish, avaricious, vain, proud, slanderers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, villainous, unnatural, perfidious, defamers, debauchees,read more.
cruel, enemies to virtue, traitors, insolent, conceited, and more devoted to pleasure than to piety: of which they wear the appearance, but disclaim its influence. have no intercourse with such.

Now the spirit says expresly, that in the latter times some shall abandon the faith, by giving credit to seducing spirits, and the doctrine concerning demons;

Jesus answered them, take care not to be deceived by any one: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am the Christ: and shall deceive many.

Jesus answer'd by saying, take care not to let any one impose upon you;

he answered, take care, that you be not seduced: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am the Christ. it won't be long e'er this happens, therefore do not follow them.

then shall many relapse, and shall pursue one another with mutual treachery and hatred. many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. and as iniquity becomes more flagrant, the zeal of many will grow cool.

Dear children, the last time is come: as ye have heard that antichrist was to come, accordingly many antichrists have already appeared; whereby we know that we are now in the last times. they went out from us, but they were not of us: for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that it might be manifest, that they were not all of us.

Above all things you are to know, that in these last times, impostors will appear, who will abandon themselves to their own sensual passions, whose cry will be, "where is the promise of his coming? for since our fathers are dead, the state of things is the same it has ever been since the beginning of the world."

but shall receive at present in this age, what will be a hundred times better to him, than houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, tho' with persecution: and in the age to come eternal life.

but before all these events, they will seize upon you and persecute you, drag you to the synagogues and to prisons, being accused before kings and governours, for professing my name. and that shall be one proof of the truth of your profession. fix it therefore in your mind, not to think beforehand about your defence.read more.
for I will make you speak with such strength of argument, as all your adversaries shall not be able to contradict or withstand. you will be betrayed even by your very parents, and brethren, and kindred, and friends. nay, some of you they will prosecute even to death. you will be hated by all mankind for professing my name,

then shall they deliver you up to torments, and to death: and ye shall be hated by all nations upon my account. then shall many relapse, and shall pursue one another with mutual treachery and hatred.

these are the beginning of sorrows. then look to your selves: for they will deliver you up to the tribunals, and scourge you in the synagogues: you will be brought before governours, and princes upon my account, to be my witnesses against them. but the gospel must first be published among all nations. now when they shall lead you to deliver you up, be not sollicitous about your defence, don't premeditate upon it; but what shall be suggested to you at the very occasion, that deliver: for it is not you that will plead, but the holy spirit.read more.
then the brother shall betray his brother to death, and the father his son: children shall prosecute their parents, and be the instruments to take away their lives: you will be the object of universal hatred upon my account; but he that shall persevere unto the end, shall be saved.

so Christ being once offered up to take away the sins of many; he shall appear the second time, without making any further expiation to save those who expect him.

so it shall be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and after they have separated the wicked from the just,

And when he was upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came to him in private, and said, tell us when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of this age?

as some of you have already own'd, that I am matter of joy to you, as you will be to me in the day of the Lord Jesus Christ:

for you very well know, that the day of the Lord steals on like a thief in the night.

As for that day of the Lord, it will advance like a thief: then the heavens will rush with violence, the boiling elements will be dissolved, and the earth with all its contents, shall be burnt away.

and have known by experience the truth of the divine promises, and the miracles of the age that was to come; it is impossible,

and how exceedingly great that power is, which he has employ'd upon us who believe, a power corresponding to that energy of his mighty strength; which he exerted in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at the head of his heavenly kingdom, far above all the principalities, all the powers, all the potentates, all the dominations, and whatever order can be named, not only in this age, but also in the age to come:

If then you are risen with Christ, seek the things, that are above, where Christ sits at the right hand of God. let the things above, and not such worldly matters be the object of your thoughts. for you are dead to them, and Christ has secured your life with God.read more.
Christ is your life, and when he shall appear, then shall you also appear with him in glory.

and let us animate one another to the mutual returns of love, and kind offices: not abandoning our assemblies, as some do; but encourage one another: even so much the more, as you see the day approaching.
