'Off' in the Bible
And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.
since his disciples had gone off into town to buy food.
Then the woman left her water jar, went off into the town and said to the people,
Jesus *said to him, “Go; your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off.
The man went off and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.
Perceiving, however, that they were about to come and carry Him off by force to make Him a king, Jesus withdrew again up the hill alone by Himself.
There they got on board a boat, and pushed off to cross the Lake to Capernaum. By this time it had become dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them.
The next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the sea knew there had been only one boat. They also knew that Jesus had not boarded the boat with His disciples, but that His disciples had gone off alone.
Then the Pharisees said to them, “Have you also been deluded and swept off your feet?
and told him, "Go and wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is translated "Sent One"). So he went off, washed, and came back seeing.
He said, "The man named Jesus made some mud, spread it on my eyes, and told me, "Go to Siloam and wash.' So off I went and washed, and I received my sight."
Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there will be an offensive odor, for he has been dead four days! [It is hopeless!]”
though some of them went off to the Pharisees and told them what He had done.
Thus the Pharisees said to one another, "You see that you can do nothing. Look, the world has run off after him!"
got up from supper, took off His [outer] robe, and taking a [servant’s] towel, He tied it around His waist.
He cuts off every branch that does not produce fruit in me, and he cuts back every branch that does produce fruit, so that it might produce more fruit.
Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
So she ran off and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, whom Jesus kept loving. She told them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!"
So Peter and the other disciple took off for the tomb.
and the other disciples came by the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but as it were about two hundred cubits off, dragging the net of the fishes;
Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called the mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath-day's journey off.
For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
So in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or action is of men [merely human in origin], it will fail and be destroyed;
They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; so they came, dragged him off, and took him to the Sanhedrin.
Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.
dragged him out of the city, and stoned him, the witnesses throwing off their outer garments and giving them into the care of a young man called Saul.
Saul, however, was ravaging the church. He would enter house after house, drag off men and women, and put them in prison.
When Saul got up off the ground, he couldn't see anything, even though his eyes were open. So his companions took him by the hand and led him into Damascus.
and his hearers were all amazed, and began to ask one another, "Is not this the man who in Jerusalem tried to exterminate those who called upon that Name, and came here on purpose to carry them off in chains to the High Priests?"
When the brothers found out, they took him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus.
The news about them reached the ears of the church at Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas off to Antioch.
And they determined, according as any one of the disciples was well off, each of them to send to the brethren who dwelt in Judaea, to minister to them;
And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.
And they said to her, You are off your head. But still she said, with decision, that it was so. And they said, It is his angel.
Then after they had fasted, prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them off.
Then, throwing off all reserve, Paul and Barnabas said, "We were bound to proclaim God's Message to you first. But since you spurn it and judge yourselves to be unworthy of the Life of the Ages--well, we turn to the Gentiles.
But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.
Then, being sent off, they went down to Antioch, and after gathering the assembly, they delivered the letter.
After they had spent some time there, they were sent off in peace by the brothers to those who had sent them.
There was such a sharp disagreement that they parted company, and Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed off to Cyprus.
But when her owners saw that their hopes of gain were gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them off to the magistrates in the public square.
And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.
And suddenly there was an earth-shock, so that the base of the prison was moved: and all the doors came open, and everyone's chains came off.
As soon as it was night, the brothers sent Paul and Silas off to Berea. On arrival, they went into the synagogue of the Jews.
So at that time the brothers immediately sent Paul away to go as far as the sea; but Silas and Timothy remained there [at Berea].
And the whole city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord to the theatre, having seized and carried off with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, fellow-travellers of Paul.
A young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in a window, began to sink off into a deep sleep as Paul kept speaking longer and longer. Overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third floor and was picked up dead.
And we, having gone before on board ship, sailed off to Assos, going to take in Paul there; for so he had directed, he himself being about to go on foot.
Sailing from there, the next day we arrived off Chios. The following day we crossed over to Samos, and the day after, we came to Miletus.
When, however, our time was up, we left and went on our way, all the disciples and their wives and children coming to see us off. Then, after kneeling down on the beach and praying,
who, at once, having taken soldiers and centurions, ran down upon them, and they having seen the chief captain and the soldiers, did leave off beating Paul.
as also the high priest and all the Council of the elders can testify. From them I also received letters to the brethren, and started off for Damascus in order to bring even those who were there to Jerusalem as prisoners to be punished.
And now why delay? Rise, get yourself baptized, and wash off your sins, calling upon His name.'
and he said unto me, Go, because to nations far off I will send thee.'
They listened to him up to this word. Then they raised their voices, shouting, “Wipe this person off the earth—it’s a disgrace for him to live!”
And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air,
But Felix, having a more exact knowledge about the Way, put them off, saying, “When Lysias the commander comes down, I will decide your case.”
Therefore, if I am guilty and have committed anything worthy of death, I do not try to escape death; but if there is nothing to the accusations which these men are bringing against me, no one can hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar (Emperor Nero).”
When therefore they had come together here, without putting it off, I sat the next day on the judgment-seat and commanded the man to be brought:
And when he made his answer in these words, Festus said in a loud voice, Paul, you are off your head; your great learning has made you unbalanced.
Then Paul said, I am not off my head, most noble Festus, but my words are true and wise.
After sailing through the open sea off Cilicia and Pamphylia, we reached Myra in Lycia.
Sailing slowly for many days, we came with difficulty as far as Cnidus. Since the wind did not allow us to approach it, we sailed along the south side of Crete off Salmone.
After hoisting the skiff [on board], they used support lines [for frapping] to undergird and brace the ship’s hull; and fearing that they might run aground on the shallows of Syrtis [off the north coast of Africa], they let down the sea anchor and lowered the sails and were driven along [backwards with the bow into the wind].
Then fearing that we might run aground somewhere on the rocks, they dropped four anchors from the stern [to slow the ship] and kept wishing for daybreak to come.
Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.
After casting off the anchors, they left them in the sea, at the same time loosening the ropes that held the rudders. Then they hoisted the foresail to the wind and headed for the beach.
The soldiers’ plan was to kill the prisoners so that no one could swim away and escape.
But the captain, desiring to keep Paul safe, kept them from their purpose, and gave orders that those who had knowledge of swimming were to go off the ship and get first to land:
And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.
From there we cast off and arrived at Rhegium, and after one day a south wind sprang up and on the second day we came to Puteoli.
How then is the Jew better off? or what profit is there in circumcision?
What, then, does this mean? Are we Jews any better off? Not at all! For we have already accused everyone, both Jews and Greeks, of being under the power of sin.
I say then, Did God cast off his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
God did not cast off his people which he foreknew. Or know ye not what the scripture saith of Elijah? how he pleadeth with God against Israel:
And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;
Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in.
Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:
The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
Having finished this therefore, and having sealed to them this fruit, I will set off by you into Spain.
However, when we are among mature people, we do speak a message of wisdom, but not the wisdom of this world or of the rulers of this world, who are passing off the scene.
Being defamed, we entreat. We are made as the filth of the world, the dirt wiped off by all, even until now.
And all this describes what some of you were. But now you have had every stain washed off: now you have been set apart as holy: now you have been pronounced free from guilt; in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and through the Spirit of our God.
However, food will not bring us closer to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat food that has been offered to an idol, and no better off if we do.
but I hit hard and straight at my own body and lead it off into slavery, lest possibly, after I have been a herald to others, I should myself be rejected.
For if a woman does not cover herself, let her [hair] be shorn off. But if [it is] shameful for a woman to [have her head] shorn or shaved, let her cover her [head].
You know that when you were pagans, you were led off after speechless idols; however you were led off [whether by impulse or habit].
So allow no one to treat him with disdain [as if he were inconsequential]. But send him off [cordially, and speed him on his way] in peace, so that he may come to me, for I am expecting him [to come along] with the other brothers.
but whenever a person turns [in repentance and faith] to the Lord, the veil is taken away.
if indeed, even [after we] have taken [it] off, we will not be found naked.
So while we are still in this tent, we sigh under our burdens, because we do not want to put it off but to put it on, so that our dying bodies may be swallowed up by life.
We have not cut you off, but you have cut off your own feelings toward us.
And I am not saying this so that others may get off free, while the weight comes on you:
For we overthrow arrogant 'reckonings,' and every stronghold that towers high in defiance of the knowledge of God, and we carry off every thought as if into slavery--into subjection to Christ;
For you tolerate it, if any one enslaves you, lives at your expense, makes off with your property, gives himself airs, or strikes you on the face.
{For in what respect are you made worse off} more than the rest of the churches, except that I myself was not a burden to you? Forgive me this wrong!
Now what I am saying is this: As long as an heir is a child, he is no better off than a slave, even though he owns everything.
It was for this freedom that Christ set us free [completely liberating us]; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery [which you once removed].
O that even they would cut themselves off who are unsettling you!
