1 Then Saul communed with Jonathan his son, and with all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan Saul's son had a great favour to David,
1 Now Saul told Jonathan his son and all his servants (A)to put David to death. But (B)Jonathan, Saul’s son, greatly delighted in David.
1 And Saul spake to Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, that they should kill David.
1 Saul ordered his son Jonathan and all his servants to kill David.(A) But Saul’s son Jonathan liked David very much,(B)
1 Saul told his son Jonathan and all his officials to kill David, but Saul's son Jonathan was very fond of David.
2 and told David saying, "Saul my father goeth about to slay thee. Now therefore take heed to thyself betimes and abide in some secret place and hide thyself.
2 So Jonathan told David saying, “Saul my father is seeking to put you to death. Now therefore, please be on guard in the morning, and stay in a secret place and hide yourself.
2 But Jonathan Saul's son delighted much in David: and Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeketh to kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take heed to thyself until the morning, and abide in a secret place, and hide thyself:
2 so he told him: “My father Saul intends to kill you. Be on your guard in the morning and hide in a secret place and stay there.
2 So Jonathan told David, "My father Saul is trying to kill you. In the morning be careful and stay hidden in a secret place.
3 And I will go out and stand by my father in the field where thou art, and will commune with my father of thee, and if I can perceive ought I will tell thee."
3 I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak with my father about you; (C)if I (a)find out anything, then I will tell you.”
3 And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where thou art, and I will commune with my father of thee; and what I see, that I will tell thee.
3 I’ll go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are and talk to him about you. When I see what he says, I’ll tell you.”(C)
3 I'll go out and stand by my father in the field where you are. I'll speak to my father about you. If I find out what he intends to do, I'll tell you."
4 And Jonathan spake the best of David unto Saul his father and said unto him, "Let not the king sin against his servant David, for he hath not sinned against thee, and his works are to thee ward very good.
4 Then Jonathan (D)spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “(E)Do not let the king sin against his servant David, since he has not sinned against you, and since his deeds have been very (b)beneficial to you.
4 And Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hath not sinned against thee, and because his works have been to theeward very good:
4 Jonathan spoke well of David to his father Saul. He said to him: “The king should not sin against his servant David.(D) He hasn’t sinned against you; in fact, his actions have been a great advantage to you.
4 Jonathan spoke to his father Saul favorably about David. "The king shouldn't wrong his servant David because he has not wronged you and because what he has done has been very beneficial for you.
5 For he did put his life in his hand and slew the Philistine, and the LORD gave a great victory to all Israel. And thou sawest it, and thou rejoicedest. Wherefore then shouldest thou sin against innocent blood, and slay David for nought?"
5 For (F)he took his life in his hand and struck the Philistine, and (G)the Lord brought about a great deliverance for all Israel; you saw it and rejoiced. (H)Why then will you sin against innocent blood by putting David to death without a cause?”
5 For he did put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and didst rejoice: wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?
5 He took his life in his hands when he struck down the Philistine,(E) and the Lord brought about a great victory for all Israel.(F) You saw it and rejoiced, so why would you sin against innocent blood by killing David for no reason?”(G)
5 He risked his life and struck down the Philistine, and the LORD brought about a spectacular deliverance for all Israel. You saw that and rejoiced, so why would you do wrong and shed innocent blood by killing David without cause?"
6 And Saul hearkened unto the voice of Jonathan and sware, "As truly as the LORD liveth, he shall not die."
6 Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan, and Saul vowed, “As the Lord lives, he shall not be put to death.”

9 And the evil spirit of the LORD was upon Saul as he sat in his house having a javelin in his hand, and David played with his hand.
9 Now there was (J)an evil spirit from the Lord on Saul as he was sitting in his house (K)with his spear in his hand, (L)and David was playing the harp with his hand.
9 And the evil spirit from the LORD was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his javelin in his hand: and David played with his hand.
9 Now an evil spirit sent from the Lord(I) came on Saul as he was sitting in his palace holding a spear.(J) David was playing the lyre,(K)
9 The evil spirit from the LORD attacked Saul while he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand and David was playing the lyre.
10 And Saul intended to nail David to the wall with the Javelin: But David rid himself out of Saul's presence and he smote the spear into the wall. But David fled and saved himself that same night.
10 (M)Saul tried to (d)pin David to the wall with the spear, but he slipped away out of Saul’s presence, so that he (e)stuck the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that night.
10 And Saul sought to smite David even to the wall with the javelin; but he slipped away out of Saul's presence, and he smote the javelin into the wall: and David fled, and escaped that night.
10 and Saul tried to pin David to the wall with the spear.(L) As the spear struck the wall, David eluded Saul, ran away, and escaped that night.

11 Then Saul sent messengers unto David's house, to watch him and to slay him in the morning. But Michal his wife told it him saying, "If thou save not thyself this night, tomorrow thou art a dead man."
11 Then (N)Saul sent messengers to David’s house to watch him, in order to put him to death in the morning. But Michal, David’s wife, told him, saying, “If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be put to death.”
11 Saul also sent messengers unto David's house, to watch him, and to slay him in the morning: and Michal David's wife told him, saying, If thou save not thy life to night, to morrow thou shalt be slain.

13 And then she took an image and laid it in the bed, and put a pillow stuffed with goat's hair under the head of it, and covered it with a cloth.

15 Then Saul sent the messengers to see David saying, "Bring him to me, bed and all, that he may be slain."

16 And when the messengers were come in, "Behold there lay an image in the bed, with a pillow of goat's hair under the head of it.

17 Then said Saul to Michal, "Why hast thou mocked me so, and sent away mine enemy, that he is escaped?" And Michal answered Saul, "He said unto me, 'Let me go, or else I will kill thee.'"
17 So Saul said to Michal, “Why have you deceived me like this and let my enemy go, so that he has escaped?” And Michal said to Saul, “He said to me, ‘Let me go! (R)Why should I put you to death?’”
17 And Saul said unto Michal, Why hast thou deceived me so, and sent away mine enemy, that he is escaped? And Michal answered Saul, He said unto me, Let me go; why should I kill thee?
17 Saul asked Michal, “Why did you deceive me like this? You sent my enemy away, and he has escaped!”She answered him, “He said to me, ‘Let me go! Why should I kill you?’”
17 Then Saul told Michal, "Why did you deceive me like this and let my enemy go so he could escape?" Michal told Saul, "He told me, "Let me go or I'll kill you!'"
18 And so David fled and escaped and went to Samuel to Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth.

20 Then (U)Saul sent messengers to take David, but when they saw (V)the company of the prophets prophesying, with Samuel standing and presiding over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul; and (W)they also prophesied.

21 And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers yet again the third time which prophesied also.

22 Then he himself went to Ramah and came as far as the large well that is in Secu; and he asked and said, “Where are Samuel and David?” And someone said, “Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah.”
22 Then went he also to Ramah, and came to a great well that is in Sechu: and he asked and said, Where are Samuel and David? And one said, Behold, they be at Naioth in Ramah.
22 Then Saul himself went to Ramah. He came to the large cistern at Secu, looked around, and asked, “Where are Samuel and David?”“At Naioth in Ramah,” someone said.

23 And as he went thither to Naioth in Ramah the spirit of God came upon him also and he went prophesying, until he came to Naioth in Ramah.
23 He (i)proceeded there to Naioth in Ramah; and (X)the Spirit of God came upon him also, so that he went along prophesying continually until he came to Naioth in Ramah.

24 And he stripped off his clothes and prophesied before Samuel in like manner, and fell naked all that day and all that night, wherefore it is a common saying, "Is Saul also among the prophets?"
