David Recovers His Loved Ones

11 Then it happened when David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had made a raid on the Negev and on Ziklag, and had overthrown Ziklag and burned it with fire;

11 And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the south, and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire;

11 David and his men arrived in Ziklag on the third day. The Amalekites had raided the Negev and attacked and burned down Ziklag.

11 When David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had raided the Negev and Ziklag. They had attacked Ziklag and set it on fire.

11 Now when David and his men came home to Ziklag on the third day, they found that the Amalekites had made a raid on the South (the Negeb) and on Ziklag, and had struck Ziklag and burned it with fire,

22 and they took captive the women and all who were in it, both small and great, without killing anyone, and carried them off and went their way.

22 And had taken the women captives, that were therein: they slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way.

22 They also had kidnapped the women and everyone in it from the youngest to the oldest. They had killed no one but had carried them off as they went on their way.

22 They took the women in it captive, from young to old. They did not kill anyone. Instead, they carried them off and went on their way.

22 And had taken the women and all who were there, both great and small, captive. They killed no one, but carried them off and went on their way.

33 When David and his men came to the city, behold, it was burned with fire, and their wives and their sons and their daughters had been taken captive.

33 So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives.

33 When David and his men arrived at the town, they found it burned down. Their wives, sons, and daughters had been kidnapped.

33 David and his men came to the town, and it had been burned down. Their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive.

33 So David and his men came to the town, and behold, it was burned, and their wives and sons and daughters were taken captive.

44 Then David and the people who were with him lifted their voices and wept until there was no strength in them to weep.

44 Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep.

44 David and the troops with him wept loudly until they had no strength left to weep.

44 Then David and the people who were with him lifted their voices and cried until they had no more strength left to cry.

44 Then David and the men with him lifted up their voices and wept until they had no more strength to weep.

55 Now David's two wives had been taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite.

55 And David's two wives were taken captives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.

55 David's two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelite and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite, had also been kidnapped.

55 David's two wives, Ahinoam from Jezreel and Abigail, Nabal's former wife, had been captured.

55 David's two wives also had been taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail, the widow of Nabal the Carmelite.

66 Moreover David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, for all the people were embittered, each one because of his sons and his daughters But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.

66 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.

66 David was in a difficult position because the troops talked about stoning him, for they were all very bitter over [the loss of] their sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God.

66 David was in great danger because all the people were bitter because of their sons and daughters, and they were talking about stoning him. But David found strength in the LORD his God.

66 David was greatly distressed, for the men spoke of stoning him because the souls of them all were bitterly grieved, each man for his sons and daughters. But David encouraged and strengthened himself in the Lord his God.

77 Then David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, "Please bring me the ephod." So Abiathar brought the ephod to David.

77 And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech's son, I pray thee, bring me hither the ephod. And Abiathar brought thither the ephod to David.

77 David said to Abiathar the priest, son of Ahimelech, "Bring me the ephod." So Abiathar brought it to him,

77 David told Ahimelech's son Abiathar the priest, "Bring me the ephod." So Abiathar brought the ephod to David.

77 David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech's son, I pray you, bring me the ephod. And Abiathar brought him the ephod.

88 David inquired of the LORD, saying, "Shall I pursue this band? Shall I overtake them?" And He said to him, "Pursue, for you will surely overtake them, and you will surely rescue all."

88 And David inquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.

88 and David asked the Lord: "Should I pursue these raiders? Will I overtake them?" The Lord replied to him, "Pursue [them], for you will certainly overtake [them] and rescue [the people]."

88 David inquired of the LORD: "Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?"

88 And David inquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them? The Lord answered him, Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.

99 So David went, he and the six hundred men who were with him, and came to the brook Besor, where those left behind remained.

99 So David went, he and the six hundred men that were with him, and came to the brook Besor, where those that were left behind stayed.

99 David and the 600 men with him went as far as the Wadi Besor, where where 200 men who were to remain behind would stop.

99 The LORD told David, "Pursue them! You will definitely overtake them and rescue the captives." So David and 600 men who were with him set out. They came to the Wadi Besor where those who were left behind stayed.

99 So David went, he and the 600 men with him, and came to the brook Besor; there those remained who were left behind.

1010 But David pursued, he and four hundred men, for two hundred who were too exhausted to cross the brook Besor remained behind.

1010 But David pursued, he and four hundred men: for two hundred abode behind, which were so faint that they could not go over the brook Besor.

1010 They stopped because they were too exhausted to cross the Wadi Besor. David and 400 of the men continued in pursuit.

1010 David and 400 men continued the pursuit, while the 200 men who were too exhausted to cross over the Wadi Besor remained there.

1010 But David pursued, he and 400 men, for 200 stayed behind who were too exhausted and faint to cross the brook Besor.

1111 Now they found an Egyptian in the field and brought him to David, and gave him bread and he ate, and they provided him water to drink.

1111 And they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he did eat; and they made him drink water;

1111 They found an Egyptian in the open country and brought him to David. They gave him some bread to eat and water to drink.

1111 They found an Egyptian man in the field, and they took him to David. They gave him food to eat and provided water for him.

1111 They found an Egyptian in the field and brought him to David, and gave him bread and he ate, and water to drink,

1212 They gave him a piece of fig cake and two clusters of raisins, and he ate; then his spirit revived. For he had not eaten bread or drunk water for three days and three nights.

1212 And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins: and when he had eaten, his spirit came again to him: for he had eaten no bread, nor drunk any water, three days and three nights.

1212 Then they gave him some pressed figs and two clusters of raisins. After he ate he revived, for he hadn't eaten food or drunk water for three days and three nights.

1212 They gave him part of a fig cake and two bunches of raisins. After he had eaten, he revived, since he had neither eaten food nor had he drunk water for three days and three nights.

1212 And a piece of a cake of figs and two clusters of raisins; and when he had eaten, his spirit returned to him, for he had eaten no food or drunk any water for three days and three nights.

1313 David said to him, "To whom do you belong? And where are you from?" And he said, "I am a young man of Egypt, a servant of an Amalekite; and my master left me behind when I fell sick three days ago.

1313 And David said unto him, To whom belongest thou? and whence art thou? And he said, I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days agone I fell sick.

1313 Then David said to him, "Who do you belong to? Where are you from?" "I'm an Egyptian, the slave of an Amalekite man," he said. "My master abandoned me when I got sick three days ago.

1313 David told him, "To whom do you belong and where are you from?"

1313 And David said to him, To whom do you belong? And from where have you come? He said, I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me because three days ago I fell sick.

1414 "We made a raid on the Negev of the Cherethites, and on that which belongs to Judah, and on the Negev of Caleb, and we burned Ziklag with fire."

1414 We made an invasion upon the south of the Cherethites, and upon the coast which belongeth to Judah, and upon the south of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire.

1414 We raided the south country of the Cherethites, [the territory] of Judah, and the south country of Caleb, and we burned down Ziklag."

1414 The Egyptian replied, "I'm a young Egyptian man, the slave of an Amalekite man. My master abandoned me, because I got sick three days ago. We raided the Negev of the Cherethites, the territory that belongs to Judah, and the Negev of Caleb, and we set Ziklag on fire."

1414 We had made a raid on the South (Negeb) of the Cherethites and upon that which belongs to Judah and upon the South (Negeb) of Caleb. And we burned Ziklag with fire.

1515 Then David said to him, "Will you bring me down to this band?" And he said, "Swear to me by God that you will not kill me or deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring you down to this band."

1515 And David said to him, Canst thou bring me down to this company? And he said, Swear unto me by God, that thou wilt neither kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring thee down to this company.

1515 David then asked him, "Will you lead me to these raiders?" He said, "Swear to me by God that you won't kill me or turn me over to my master, and I will lead you to them."

1515 David asked him, "Will you take me to this raiding party?" He said, "Swear to me by God that you won't kill me or turn me over to my master, and I'll take you to the raiding party."

1515 And David said to him, Can you take me down to this band? And he said, Swear to me by God that you will neither kill me nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring you down to this band.

David Defeats The Amalekites

1616 When he had brought him down, behold, they were spread over all the land, eating and drinking and dancing because of all the great spoil that they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from the land of Judah.

1616 And when he had brought him down, behold, they were spread abroad upon all the earth, eating and drinking, and dancing, because of all the great spoil that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah.

1616 So he led him, and there were the Amalekites, spread out over the entire area, eating, drinking, and celebrating because of the great amount of plunder they had taken from the land of the Philistines and the land of Judah.

1616 The Egyptian led him to the camp, and there the Amalekites were spread out over the whole area, eating, drinking, and celebrating with the great amount of spoil they had taken from the territory belonging to the Philistines and to Judah.

1616 And when he had brought David down, behold, the raiders were spread abroad over all the land, eating and drinking and dancing because of all the great spoil they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from the land of Judah.

1717 David slaughtered them from the twilight until the evening of the next day; and not a man of them escaped, except four hundred young men who rode on camels and fled.

1717 And David smote them from the twilight even unto the evening of the next day: and there escaped not a man of them, save four hundred young men, which rode upon camels, and fled.

1717 David slaughtered them from twilight until the evening of the next day. None of them escaped, except 400 young men who got on camels and fled.

1717 David struck them down from twilight until the evening of the next day, and not one of them escaped except for 400 young men who mounted camels and fled.

1717 And David smote them from twilight even to the evening of the next day, and not a man of them escaped, except 400 youths who rode camels and fled.

1818 So David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken, and rescued his two wives.

1818 And David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away: and David rescued his two wives.

1818 David recovered everything the Amalekites had taken; he also rescued his two wives.

1818 David rescued everyone whom the Amalekites had captured, including his two wives.

1818 David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken and rescued his two wives.

1919 But nothing of theirs was missing, whether small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything that they had taken for themselves; David brought it all back.

1919 And there was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither spoil, nor any thing that they had taken to them: David recovered all.

1919 Nothing [of theirs] was missing from the youngest to the oldest, including the sons and daughters, of all the plunder the Amalekites had taken. David got everything back.

1919 Nothing of theirs was missing, whether small or large, sons or daughters, spoil, or anything that they had taken for themselves David brought back everything.

1919 Nothing was missing, small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything that had been taken; David recovered all.

2020 So David had captured all the sheep and the cattle which the people drove ahead of the other livestock, and they said, "This is David's spoil."

2020 And David took all the flocks and the herds, which they drave before those other cattle, and said, This is David's spoil.

2020 He took all the sheep and cattle, which were driven ahead of the other livestock, and the people shouted, "This is David's plunder!"

2020 David took all the rest of the sheep and cattle, driving them ahead of their rescued livestock. People said about all this, "This is David's spoil."

2020 Also David captured all the flocks and herds [which the enemy had], and the people drove those animals before him and said, This is David's spoil.

2121 When David came to the two hundred men who were too exhausted to follow David, who had also been left at the brook Besor, and they went out to meet David and to meet the people who were with him, then David approached the people and greeted them.

2121 And David came to the two hundred men, which were so faint that they could not follow David, whom they had made also to abide at the brook Besor: and they went forth to meet David, and to meet the people that were with him: and when David came near to the people, he saluted them.

2121 When David came to the 200 men who had been too exhausted to go with him and had been left at the Wadi Besor, they came out to meet him and to meet the troops with him. When David approached the men, he greeted them,

2121 David came to the 200 men who were too exhausted to follow him and who had been left at the Wadi Besor. They came out to meet David and the people who were with him. As David approached the people, he asked them how they were doing.

2121 And David came to the 200 men who were so exhausted and faint that they could not follow [him] and had been left at the brook Besor [with the baggage]. They came to meet David and those with him, and when he came near to the men, he saluted them.

2222 Then all the wicked and worthless men among those who went with David said, "Because they did not go with us, we will not give them any of the spoil that we have recovered, except to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away and depart."

2222 Then answered all the wicked men and men of Belial, of those that went with David, and said, Because they went not with us, we will not give them ought of the spoil that we have recovered, save to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, and depart.

2222 but all the worthless men among those who had gone with David retorted, "Because they didn't go with us, we will not give any of the plunder we recovered to them except for each man's wife and children. They may take them and go."

2222 At this point, all the wicked and worthless men of the group who had gone with David answered, "Because they didn't go with us, we won't give them any of the spoil that we recovered, except that each person may take his wife and his children and go."

2222 Then all the wicked and base men who went with David said, Because they did not go with us, we will give them nothing of the spoil we have recovered, except that every man may lead away his wife and children and depart.

2323 Then David said, "You must not do so, my brothers, with what the LORD has given us, who has kept us and delivered into our hand the band that came against us.

2323 Then said David, Ye shall not do so, my brethren, with that which the LORD hath given us, who hath preserved us, and delivered the company that came against us into our hand.

2323 But David said, "My brothers, you must not do this with what the Lord has given us. He protected us and handed over to us the raiders who came against us.

2323 David said, "No, you won't do this, my brothers, with what the LORD has given us. He guarded us and gave the raiding party that came against us into our hand.

2323 David said, You shall not do so, my brethren, with what the Lord has given us. He has preserved us and has delivered into our hands the troop that came against us.

2424 "And who will listen to you in this matter? For as his share is who goes down to the battle, so shall his share be who stays by the baggage; they shall share alike."

2424 For who will hearken unto you in this matter? but as his part is that goeth down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they shall part alike.

2424 Who can agree to your proposal? The share of the one who goes into battle is to be the same as the share of the one who remains with the supplies. They will share equally."

2424 Who will listen to you in this matter? Indeed, the share of those who went down into battle and the share of those who stayed with the supplies will be the same. They'll share alike."

2424 Who would listen to you in this matter? For as is the share of him who goes into the battle, so shall his share be who stays by the baggage. They shall share alike.

2525 So it has been from that day forward, that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel to this day.

2525 And it was so from that day forward, that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel unto this day.

2525 And it has been so from that day forward. David established [this policy] as a law and an ordinance for Israel [and it continues] to this very day.

2525 From that day forward he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel, and it remains to this present day.

2525 And from that day to this he made it a statute and ordinance for Israel.

2626 Now when David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the spoil to the elders of Judah, to his friends, saying, "Behold, a gift for you from the spoil of the enemies of the LORD:

2626 And when David came to Ziklag, he sent of the spoil unto the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, Behold a present for you of the spoil of the enemies of the LORD;

2626 When David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to his friends, the elders of Judah, saying, "Here is a gift for you from the plunder of the Lord's enemies."

2626 David came to Ziklag, and he sent some of the spoil to the elders of Judah, and to his friends, telling them, "Look, this is a gift for you from the spoil of the enemies of the LORD

2626 When David came to Ziklag, he sent part of the spoil to the elders of Judah, his friends, saying, Here is a gift for you of the spoil of the enemies of the Lord:

2727 to those who were in Bethel, and to those who were in Ramoth of the Negev, and to those who were in Jattir,

2727 To them which were in Bethel, and to them which were in south Ramoth, and to them which were in Jattir,

2727 [He sent gifts] to those in Bethel, in Ramoth of the Negev, and in Jattir;

2727 in Bethel, Ramoth-negev, Jattir,

2727 For those in Bethel, Ramoth of the Negeb, Jattir,

2828 and to those who were in Aroer, and to those who were in Siphmoth, and to those who were in Eshtemoa,

2828 And to them which were in Aroer, and to them which were in Siphmoth, and to them which were in Eshtemoa,

2828 to those in Aroer, in Siphmoth, and in Eshtemoa;

2828 Aroer, Siphmoth, Eshtemoa,

2828 Aroer, Siphmoth, Eshtemoa,

2929 and to those who were in Racal, and to those who were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, and to those who were in the cities of the Kenites,

2929 And to them which were in Rachal, and to them which were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, and to them which were in the cities of the Kenites,

2929 to those in Racal, in the towns of the Jerahmeelites, and in the towns of the Kenites;

2929 Rachal, in the Jerahmeelite towns, in the Kenite towns,

2929 Racal, the cities of the Jerahmeelites, the cities of the Kenites,

3030 and to those who were in Hormah, and to those who were in Bor-ashan, and to those who were in Athach,

3030 And to them which were in Hormah, and to them which were in Chorashan, and to them which were in Athach,

3030 to those in Hormah, in Bor-ashan, and in Athach;

3030 in Hormah, Bor-ashan, Athach,

3030 Hormah, Bor-ashan, Athach,

3131 and to those who were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men were accustomed to go."

3131 And to them which were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men were wont to haunt.

3131 to those in Hebron, and to [those in] all the places where David and his men had roamed.

3131 Hebron, and for all those places where David and his men had frequented."

3131 Hebron, and for those in all the places David and his men had habitually haunted.
