Hezekiah Reigns In Judah
1 Hezekiah son of Ahaz became king of Judah. It was in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel.
1 Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.

4 He removed the high places. He broke the stone pillars to bits, and cut down the Asherah poles. The brass snake that Moses had made was crushed to powder at his command, because in those days the children of Israel had offerings burned before it, and he gave it the name Nehushtan.

5 Hezekiah had faith in Jehovah, the God of Israel. There was no one like him among all the kings of Judah who were before him.
5 He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.

6 For his heart was fixed on Jehovah. He did not turn from his ways. Hezekiah obeyed Jehovah's commandments that Jehovah gave to Moses.
6 For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.

7 Jehovah was with Hezekiah. He did well in everything he did. He took up arms against the king of Assyria and was his servant no longer.
7 And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.

Sennacherib Of Assyria Invades Judah
13 Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, came up against all the walled towns of Judah and took them.
13 Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced cities of Judah, and took them.
13 (R)Now in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and seized them.

14 Hezekiah sent a message to Sennacherib at Lachish: I have done wrong. Stop your attack and I will pay whatever you demand. The emperor's answer was that Hezekiah should send him ten tons of silver and one ton of gold.
14 And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.
14 Then Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria at Lachish, saying, “(S)I have done wrong. (d)Withdraw from me; whatever you (e)impose on me I will bear.” So the king of Assyria (f)required of Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.
14 So Hezekiah king of Judah sent word to the king of Assyria at Lachish,(Q) saying, “I have done wrong;(R) withdraw from me. Whatever you demand from me, I will pay.” The king of Assyria demanded 11 tons(c) of silver and one ton(d) of gold from King Hezekiah of Judah.
14 So Hezekiah sent this message to the king of Assyria at Lachish: "I have offended you. Withdraw from me, and I'll accept whatever tribute you impose." So the king of Assyria required Hezekiah to pay him 300 talents of silver and 30 talents of gold.
15 Hezekiah sent him all the silver in the Temple and in the palace treasury.
15 And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king's house.

16 At that time did Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.

17 The king of Assyria sent his commander-in-chief (Tartan), his quartermaster, and his field commander with a large army from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. They stood at the channel for the Upper Pool on the road to the Laundryman's Field.
17 And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rabshakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller's field.
17 Then the king of Assyria sent (U)Tartan and Rab-saris and Rabshakeh from Lachish to King Hezekiah with a large army to Jerusalem. So they went up and came to Jerusalem. 17 Then the king of Assyria sent the Tartan,(T) the Rab-saris, and the Rabshakeh, along with a massive army, from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem.(U) They advanced and came to Jerusalem, and(e) they took their position by the aqueduct of the upper pool, which is by the highway to the Fuller’s Field.(V)
17 Sometime later, the king of Assyria sent Tartan, Rab-saris, and Rab-shakeh from Lachish to King Hezekiah in Jerusalem, accompanied with a large army.
18 They sent for the king, and Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, who was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, came out to them.
18 And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.

Assyrians Advise Against Trust In Yahweh
19 The Rabshakeh said to them: Say to Hezekiah: These are the words of the great king, the king of Assyria: In what are you placing your hope?
19 And Rabshakeh said unto them, Speak ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
19 Then Rabshakeh said to them, “Say now to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, “(Y)What is this confidence that you (h)have?
19 Then(Z) the Rabshakeh said to them, “Tell Hezekiah this is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: ‘What are you relying on?(f)(AA)
19 Rab-shakeh told them, "Tell Hezekiah right now, "This is what the great king, the king of Assyria says:
20 You say you have counsel and [military] strength for war. These are only words. To whom are you looking for support that you rebel against me?
20 Thou sayest, (but they are but vain words,) I have counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
20 You say (but they are (i)only empty words), ‘I have counsel and strength for the war.’ Now on whom do you rely, (Z)that you have rebelled against me?
20 You think mere words are strategy and strength for war. What are you now relying on so that you have rebelled against me?(AB)
20 ""Why are you so confident? You're saying but they're only empty words "I have enough advice and resources to conduct warfare!'
21 You rely on Egypt that broken reed of a staff. If a man leans on it (relies on its power) his hand (strength) will be pierced (wounded) (diminished). So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who put their faith in him.
21 Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.
21 Now behold, you (j)(AA)rely on the staff of this crushed reed, even on Egypt; on which if a man leans, it will go into his (k)hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who rely on him.
21 Look, you are now trusting in Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff(AC) that will enter and pierce the hand of anyone who leans on it.(AD) This is how Pharaoh king of Egypt is to all who trust in him.
21 ""Now who are you relying on, that you have rebelled against me? Look, you're trusting on Egypt to lean on like a staff, but it's a crushed reed, and if you lean on it, it will collapse and pierce your hand. Pharaoh, king of Egypt, is just like that to everyone who relies on him!
22 If you say to me: We trust in Jehovah our God, is he not the one whose high places and altars have been taken away by Hezekiah. For he told Judah and Jerusalem that worship may only be given before this altar in Jerusalem?
22 But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?
22 But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the Lord our God,’ is it not He whose high places and (AB)whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem’?

23 And now, make an agreement with my master, the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able to put horsemen on them.
23 Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.

25 Have I now come to destroy this place without Jehovah? It was Jehovah who said to me: 'Go up against this land and make it waste.'
25 Am I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
25 Have I now come up (p)without the Lord’s approval against this place to destroy it? The Lord said to me, ‘Go up against this land and destroy it.’”’”

25 "Now then, haven't I come up apart from the LORD to attack and destroy this place? The LORD told me, "Go up against this land and destroy it!'"'"
26 Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, and Shebna and Joah said to the Rabshakeh (the commander): Will you kindly make use of the Aramaean language in talking to your servants. We are used to it. Do not use the Jews' language in the hearing of the people on the wall.
26 Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews' language in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
26 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebnah and Joah, said to Rabshakeh, “Speak now to your servants in Aramaic, for we (q)understand it; and do not speak with us in (r)(AC)Judean in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”
26 Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, Shebnah, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic,(AH) since we understand it. Don’t speak with us in Hebrew(g) within earshot of the people on the wall.”
26 At this, Hilkiah's son Eliakim, Shebnah, and Joah asked Rab-shakeh, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, because we understand it, but don't speak the language of Judah to us within the hearing of the people who are on the wall."
27 He replied: Do you think you and the king are the only ones the king sent me to say these things? No, I am also talking to the people who are sitting on the wall. They will have to eat their excrement and drink their own urine, just as you will.
27 But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?
27 But Rabshakeh said to them, “Has my master sent me only to your master and to you to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, doomed to eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?”
27 But the Rabshakeh said to them, “Has my master sent me only to your master and to you to speak these words? Hasn’t he also sent me to the men who sit on the wall, destined with you to eat their own excrement and drink their own urine?”(AI)
27 But Rab-shakeh spoke to them, "Has my master sent me to talk about this just to your master and to you, and not also to the men who are sitting on the wall, who will soon be eating their own feces and drinking their own urine along with you?"
28 The official stood up and shouted in Hebrew: Listen to what the king of Assyria is telling you!
28 Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and spake, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria:

29 He warns you: 'Do not let Hezekiah deceive you. Hezekiah cannot save you.'
29 Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand:
29 Thus says the king, ‘(AD)Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you from (t)my hand;
29 This is what the king says: ‘Don’t let Hezekiah deceive(AJ) you; he can’t deliver you from my hand.(AK)

30 Do not let Hezekiah convince you to rely on Jehovah. Do not think that Jehovah will save you or that he will stop our Assyrian army from capturing you.
30 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
30 nor let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying, “The Lord will surely deliver us, and this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”
30 Don’t let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the Lord by saying: Certainly the Lord will deliver us! This city will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.’(AL)
30 "Don't let Hezekiah deceive you, because he will prove to be unable to deliver you from my control. And don't let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD by telling you, "The LORD will certainly deliver us and this city will not be handed over to the king of Assyria."
31 Do not listen to Hezekiah. The king of Assyria commands you to come out of the city and surrender. Make peace with me and you will be allowed to eat grapes from your own vines and figs from your own trees, and to drink water from your own wells (cisterns).
31 Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern:
31 Do not listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria, “(u)Make your peace with me and come out to me, and eat (AE)each of his vine and each of his fig tree and drink each of the waters of his own cistern,
31 “Don’t listen to Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says: ‘Make peace(i) with me and surrender to me. Then every one of you may eat from his own vine and his own fig tree,(AM) and every one may drink water from his own cistern

32 The king will resettle you in a country much like your own. There are vineyards to give wine and there is grain for making bread there. It is a land of olives, olive oil, and honey. Do what he commands and you will not die. Do not let Hezekiah fool you into thinking Jehovah will rescue you.
32 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.

33 Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

33 "But don't listen to Hezekiah when he misleads you by saying, "The LORD will deliver us!" Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land from control by the king of Assyria?
34 Where are they now? Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah? Did anyone save Samaria?
34 Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand?

35 When did any of the gods of all these countries ever save their country from our king? What makes you think Jehovah can save Jerusalem?
35 Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of mine hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand?
35 Who among all the gods of the lands (w)have delivered their land from my hand, (AK)that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem from my hand?’”
35 Who among all the gods of the lands has delivered his land from my power? So will the Lord deliver Jerusalem?’”(AR)
35 Who among all the gods of these lands has delivered their land from my control, so that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem from me?'"
36 The people kept quiet. They did as King Hezekiah told them. They did not say a word.
36 But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
36 But the people were silent and answered him not a word, for the king’s commandment was, “Do not answer him.”

36 But the people remained silent and did not answer with even so much as a word, because the king's order was, "Don't answer him."
37 Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah tore their clothes in grief. They reported to the king what the Assyrian official had said.
37 Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

37 Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was in charge of the palace, Shebna the court secretary, and Joah son of Asaph, the court historian,(AS) came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn(AT) and reported to him the words of the Rabshakeh.
37 But Hilkiah's son Eliakim, who managed the household, Shebna the scribe, and Asaph's son Joah the recorder came back to Hezekiah with their clothes torn and told him what Rab-shakeh had said.
