Yahweh Appears To Abraham As A Man

1 And Jehovah appeareth unto him among the oaks of Mamre, and he is sitting at the opening of the tent, about the heat of the day;

1 Now (A)the Lord appeared to him by the (a)(B)oaks of Mamre, while he was sitting at the tent door in the heat of the day.

1 And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;

1 Then the Lord appeared to Abraham at the oaks of Mamre(A) while he was sitting in the entrance of his tent during the heat of the day.

1 Later, the LORD appeared to Abraham by the oaks belonging to Mamre. As Abraham was sitting near the entrance to his tent during the hottest part of the day,

2 and he lifteth up his eyes and looketh, and lo, three men standing by him, and he seeth, and runneth to meet them from the opening of the tent, and boweth himself towards the earth,

2 When he lifted up his eyes and looked, behold, three (C)men were standing opposite him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth,

2 And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,

2 He looked up, and he saw three men standing near him.(B) When he saw them, he ran from the entrance of the tent to meet them and bowed to the ground.

2 he glanced up and saw three men standing there, not far from him. As soon as he noticed them, Abraham ran from the tent entrance to greet them and bowed low to the ground.

3 And he saith, 'My Lord, if, I pray thee, I have found grace in thine eyes, do not, I pray thee, pass on from thy servant;

3 and said, “(b)My Lord, if now I have found favor in Your sight, please do not (c)pass Your servant by.

3 And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:

3 Then he said, “My lord,(a) if I have found favor in your sight, please do not go on past your servant.

3 "My lords," he told them, "if I have found favor with you, please don't leave your servant.

4 let, I pray thee, a little water be accepted, and wash your feet, and recline under the tree;

4 Please let a little water be brought and (D)wash your feet, and (d)rest yourselves under the tree;

4 Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree:

4 Let a little water be brought, that you may wash your feet and rest yourselves under the tree.

4 I'll have some water brought to wash your feet while you rest under the tree.

5 and I bring a piece of bread, and support ye your heart; afterwards pass on, for therefore have ye passed over unto your servant;' and they say, 'So mayest thou do as thou has spoken.'

5 and I will (e)(E)bring a piece of bread, that you may (f)refresh yourselves; after that you may go on, since you have (g)visited your servant.” And they said, “So do, as you have said.”

5 And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.

5 I will bring a bit of bread so that you may strengthen yourselves.(b) This is why you have passed your servant’s way. Later, you can continue on.”“Yes,” they replied, “do as you have said.”

5 I'll bring some food for you, and after that you may continue your journey, since you have come to visit your servant." So they replied, "Okay! Do what you've proposed."

6 And Abraham hasteth towards the tent, unto Sarah, and saith, 'Hasten three measures of flour-meal, knead, and make cakes;'

6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, “(h)Quickly, prepare three (i)measures of fine flour, knead it and make bread cakes.”

6 And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth.

6 So Abraham hurried into the tent and said to Sarah, “Quick! Knead three measures(c) of fine flour and make bread.”(d)

6 Abraham hurried into the tent and told Sarah, "Quick! Take three measures of the best flour, knead it, and make some flat bread."

7 and Abraham ran unto the herd, and taketh a son of the herd, tender and good, and giveth unto the young man, and he hasteth to prepare it;

7 Abraham also ran to the herd, and took a tender and (j)choice calf and gave it to the servant, and he hurried to prepare it.

7 And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetcht a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it.

7 Meanwhile, Abraham ran to the herd and got a tender, choice calf. He gave it to a young man, who hurried to prepare it.

7 Next, Abraham ran to the herd, found a choice and tender calf, and gave it to the young men, who went off in a hurry to prepare it.

8 and he taketh butter and milk, and the son of the herd which he hath prepared, and setteth before them; and he is standing by them under the tree, and they do eat.

8 He took curds and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and placed it before them; and he was standing by them under the tree (k)as they ate.

8 And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat.

8 Then Abraham took curds(e) and milk, and the calf that he had prepared, and set them before the men. He served(f) them as they ate under the tree.

8 Then he took curds, milk, and the calf that had been prepared, placed the food in front of them, and stood near them under the tree while they ate.

Sarah Laughs

9 And they say unto him, 'Where is Sarah thy wife?' and he saith, 'Lo -- in the tent;'

9 Then they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “There, in the tent.”

9 And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.

9 “Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked him.“There, in the tent,” he answered.

9 The men asked him, "Where is your wife Sarah?" "There, in the tent," he replied.

10 and he saith, 'returning I return unto thee, about the time of life, and lo, to Sarah thy wife a son.'

10 He said, “(F)I will surely return to you (l)at this time next year; and behold, Sarah your wife will have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door, which was behind him.

10 And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.

10 The Lord said, “I will certainly come back to you in about a year’s time, and your wife Sarah will have a son!”(C) Now Sarah was listening at the entrance of the tent behind him.

10 Then one of them said, "I will certainly return to you in about a year's time. By then, your wife Sarah will have borne a son."

11 And Sarah is hearkening at the opening of the tent, which is behind him;

11 Now (G)Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; Sarah was (H)past (m)childbearing.

11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.

11 Abraham and Sarah were old and getting on in years.(g) Sarah had passed the age of childbearing.(h)(D)

11 Now Sarah was listening at the tent entrance behind him. Abraham and Sarah were old really old and Sarah was beyond the age of childbearing.

12 and Abraham and Sarah are aged, entering into days -- the way of women hath ceased to be to Sarah;

12 Sarah laughed (n)to herself, saying, “(I)After I have become old, shall I have pleasure, my (J)lord being old also?”

12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?

12 So she laughed to herself: “After I have become shriveled up and my lord is old, will I have delight?”(E)

12 That's why Sarah laughed to herself, thinking, "After I'm so old and my husband is old, too, am I going to have sex?"

13 and Sarah laugheth in her heart, saying, 'After I have waxed old I have had pleasure! -- my lord also is old!'

13 And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I indeed (o)bear a child, when I am so old?’

13 And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?

13 But the Lord asked Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Can I really have a baby when I’m old?’

13 The LORD asked Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and think, "Am I really going to bear a child, since I'm so old?'

14 And Jehovah saith unto Abraham, 'Why is this? Sarah hath laughed, saying, Is it true really -- I bear -- and I am aged? Is any thing too wonderful for Jehovah? at the appointed time I return unto thee, about the time of life, and Sarah hath a son.'

14 (K)Is anything too (p)difficult for the Lord? At the (L)appointed time I will return to you, (q)at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”

14 Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

14 Is anything impossible for the Lord?(F) At the appointed time I will come back to you, and in about a year she will have a son.”

14 Is anything impossible for the LORD? At the time set for it, I will return to you about a year from now and Sarah will have a son."

15 And Sarah denieth, saying, 'I did not laugh;' for she hath been afraid; and He saith, 'Nay, but thou didst laugh.'

15 Sarah denied it however, saying, “I did not laugh”; for she was afraid. And He said, “No, but you did laugh.”

15 Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.

15 Sarah denied it. “I did not laugh,” she said, because she was afraid.But He replied, “No, you did laugh.”

15 But Sarah denied it. "I didn't laugh," she claimed, because she was afraid. The LORD replied, "No! You did laugh!"

Abraham's Plea For Sodom

16 And the men rise from thence, and look on the face of Sodom, and Abraham is going with them to send them away;

16 Then (M)the men rose up from there, and looked down toward Sodom; and Abraham was walking with them to send them off.

16 And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.

16 The men got up from there and looked out over Sodom, and Abraham was walking with them to see them off.

16 After this, the men set out from there and looked out over Sodom. Abraham went with them to send them off.

Abraham's Bargain With God

17 and Jehovah said, 'Am I concealing from Abraham that which I am doing,

17 (N)The Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham (O)what I am about to do,

17 And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;

17 Then the Lord said, “Should I hide what I am about to do from Abraham?(G)

17 "Should I hide from Abraham what I'm about to do," the LORD asked,

18 and Abraham certainly becometh a nation great and mighty, and blessed in him have been all nations of the earth?

18 since Abraham will surely become a great and (r)mighty nation, and in him (P)all the nations of the earth will be blessed?

18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

18 Abraham is to become a great and powerful nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed through him.(H)

18 "since Abraham's descendants will become a great and powerful nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed through him?

19 for I have known him, that he commandeth his children, and his house after him (and they have kept the way of Jehovah), to do righteousness and judgment, that Jehovah may bring on Abraham that which He hath spoken concerning him.'

19 For I have (s)(Q)chosen him, so that he may (R)command his children and his household after him to (S)keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring upon Abraham (T)what He has spoken about him.”

19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

19 For I have chosen(i) him so that he will command his children and his house after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just. This is how the Lord will fulfill to Abraham what He promised him.”

19 Indeed, I've made myself known to him in order that he may encourage his sons and his household that is born after him to keep the way of the LORD, and to do what is right and just, so that the LORD may bring about for Abraham what he has promised."

20 And Jehovah saith, 'The cry of Sodom and Gomorrah -- because great; and their sin -- because exceeding grievous:

20 And the Lord said, “(U)The outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah is indeed great, and their sin is exceedingly grave.

20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;

20 Then the Lord said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is immense, and their sin is extremely serious.

20 The LORD also said, "How great is the disapproval of Sodom and Gomorrah! Their sin is so very serious!

21 I go down now, and see whether according to its cry which is coming unto Me they have done completely -- and if not -- I know;'

21 I will (V)go down now, and see if they have done entirely according to its outcry, which has come to Me; and if not, I will know.”

21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.

21 I will go down(I) to see if what they have done justifies the cry that has come up to Me. If not, I will find out.”

21 I'm going down to see whether they've acted according to the protests that have reached me. If not, I wish to know."

Abraham Intercedes For Sodom

22 and the men turn from thence, and go towards Sodom; and Abraham is yet standing before Jehovah.

22 Then (W)the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, while Abraham was still standing before (X)the Lord.

22 And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.

22 The men turned from there and went toward Sodom(J) while Abraham remained standing before the Lord.(j)

22 Then two of the men turned away from there and walked toward Sodom, while Abraham remained standing in the presence of the LORD.

23 And Abraham draweth nigh and saith, 'Dost Thou also consume righteous with wicked?

23 Abraham came near and said, “(Y)Will You indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked?

23 And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?

23 Abraham stepped forward and said, “Will You really sweep away the righteous with the wicked?(K)

23 Abraham approached and asked, "Will you actually destroy the righteous along with the wicked?

24 peradventure there are fifty righteous in the midst of the city; dost Thou also consume, and not bear with the place for the sake of the fifty -- the righteous who are in its midst?

24 Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; will You indeed sweep it away and not (t)spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it?

24 Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?

24 What if there are 50 righteous people in the city? Will You really sweep it away instead of sparing the place for the sake of the 50 righteous people who are in it?

24 Perhaps there are 50 righteous ones within the city. Will you actually destroy it and not forgive the place for the sake of the 50 righteous that are found there?

25 Far be it from Thee to do according to this thing, to put to death the righteous with the wicked; that it hath been -- as the righteous so the wicked -- far be it from Thee; doth the Judge of all the earth not do justice?'

25 Far be it from You to do (u)such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Shall not (Z)the Judge of all the earth (v)deal justly?”

25 That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

25 You could not possibly do such a thing: to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. You could not possibly do that! Won’t the Judge of all the earth do what is just?”(L)

25 Far be it from you to do such a thing to kill the righteous along with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike! The Judge of all the earth will do what is right, won't he?"

26 And Jehovah saith, 'If I find in Sodom fifty righteous in the midst of the city, then have I borne with all the place for their sake.'

26 So the Lord said, “(AA)If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will (w)spare the whole place on their account.”

26 And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.

26 The Lord said, “If I find 50 righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”(M)

26 The LORD said, "If I find 50 righteous people within Sodom, I'll forgive the whole place for their sake."

27 And Abraham answereth and saith, 'Lo, I pray thee, I have willed to speak unto the Lord, and I -- dust and ashes;

27 And Abraham replied, “Now behold, I have (x)ventured to speak to the Lord, although I am but (AB)dust and ashes.

27 And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes:

27 Then Abraham answered, “Since I have ventured to speak to the Lord—even though I am dust and ashes—

27 Abraham answered, "Look, even though I am only dust and ashes, I've ventured to speak to my LORD.

28 peradventure there are lacking five of the fifty righteous -- dost Thou destroy for five the whole of the city?' and He saith, 'I destroy it not, if I find there forty and five.'

28 Suppose the fifty righteous are lacking five, will You destroy the whole city because of five?” And He said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.”

28 Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it.

28 suppose the 50 righteous lack five. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?”He replied, “I will not destroy it if I find 45 there.”

28 What if there are five less than 50 righteous ones? Will you bring destruction upon the city because of those five?" The LORD said, "I won't destroy it if I find 45 there."

29 And he addeth again to speak unto Him and saith, 'Peradventure there are found there forty?' and He saith, 'I do it not, because of the forty.'

29 He spoke to Him yet again and said, “Suppose forty are found there?” And He said, “I will not do it on account of the forty.”

29 And he spake unto him yet again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty's sake.

29 Then he spoke to Him again, “Suppose 40 are found there?”He answered, “I will not do it on account of 40.”

29 Abraham continued to speak to him, asking, "What if 40 are found there?" The LORD replied, "I won't do it for the sake of those 40."

30 And he saith, 'Let it not be, I Pray thee, displeasing to the Lord, and I speak: peradventure there are found there thirty?' and He saith, 'I do it not, if I find there thirty.'

30 Then he said, “Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak; suppose thirty are found there?” And He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

30 And he said unto him, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.

30 Then he said, “Let the Lord not be angry, and I will speak further. Suppose 30 are found there?”He answered, “I will not do it if I find 30 there.”

30 Abraham then asked, "I hope my LORD will not be angry if I speak. What if 30 are found there?" The LORD answered, "I won't do it for the sake of those 30."

31 And he saith, 'Lo, I pray thee, I have willed to speak unto the Lord: peradventure there are found there twenty?' and He saith, 'I do not destroy it, because of the twenty.'

31 And he said, “Now behold, I have (y)ventured to speak to the Lord; suppose twenty are found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it on account of the twenty.”

31 And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord: Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty's sake.

31 Then he said, “Since I have ventured to speak to the Lord, suppose 20 are found there?”He replied, “I will not destroy it on account of 20.”

31 "Look," Abraham said, "I've presumed to speak to my LORD" so what if 20 are found there?" "For the sake of those 20," the LORD responded, "I won't destroy it."

32 And he saith, 'Let it not be, I pray Thee, displeasing to the Lord, and I speak only this time: peradventure there are found there ten?' and He saith, 'I do not destroy it, because of the ten.'

32 Then he said, “(AC)Oh may the Lord not be angry, and I shall speak only this once; suppose ten are found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it on account of the ten.”

32 And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake.

32 Then he said, “Let the Lord not be angry, and I will speak one more time.(N) Suppose 10 are found there?”He answered, “I will not destroy it on account of 10.”

32 Finally, Abraham inquired, "I hope my LORD will not be angry if I speak only once more. What if ten are found there?" He replied, "For the sake of those ten I won't destroy it."

33 And Jehovah goeth on, when He hath finished speaking unto Abraham, and Abraham hath turned back to his place.

33 As soon as He had finished speaking to Abraham (AD)the Lord departed, and Abraham returned to his place.

33 And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.

33 When the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham, He departed, and Abraham returned to his place.

33 As soon as he finished talking to Abraham, the LORD left and Abraham returned to where he had been sitting.
