1 Then called Jacob unto his sons, - and said - Gather yourselves together, and let me tell you, that which shall befall you in the afterpart of the days.
1 And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days.
1 After this, Jacob called his sons together and told them, "Assemble yourselves around me so I can tell you all what is going to happen to you in the last days.
2 Assemble yourselves and hear ye sons of Jacob, - And hearken unto Israel your father!
2 Gather yourselves together, and hear, ye sons of Jacob; and hearken unto Israel your father.
2 Come together and listen, sons of Jacob;listen to your father Israel:
2 "Gather together and listen, you children of Jacob. Listen to your father Israel."
3 Reuben, my first-born, thou, My vigour, and the first-fruit of my strength, - Pre-eminence of elevation and pre-eminence of power:
3 Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power:
3 "Reuben, you're my firstborn, my strength, and the first fruit of my vitality. You excel in rank and excel in power.
4 Boiling over like water, thou mayest not have pre-eminence, Because thou didst mount the bed of thy father, - Then, wast thou profane - My marriage-bed, he mounted!
4 Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father's bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.
4 But you're as undisciplined as a roaring river, so eventually you won't succeed, because you got in your father's bed, defiled it, and then approached my couch."
5 Simeon and Levi, are brethren, - Instruments of violence, are their agreements:
5 Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations.
5 "Simeon and Levi are brothers; their swords are violent weapons.
6 Into their circle, do not thou enter my soul! In their convocation, do not thou join mine honour! For in their anger, they slew brave men, And in their wantonness, they hamstrung oxen.
6 O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall.
6 May I never enter their council;may I never join their assembly. For in their anger they kill men,and on a whim they hamstring oxen.
6 I'll never join their council; I'll never enter their assembly. In their anger they committed murder and lamed cattle just for fun.
7 Accursed, be their anger, because fierce, And their wrath because cruel, - I divide them in Jacob, And I disperse them in Israel.
7 Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.
7 Their anger is cursed, because it is so fierce, as is their vehemence, because it is so cruel. I will separate them throughout Jacob's territory and disperse them throughout Israel."
8 Judah, as for thee, thy brethren shall praise thee when thy hand is on the neck of thy foes, - The sons of thy father, shall bow them-selves down to thee:
8 Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father's children shall bow down before thee.
8 "Your brothers will praise you, Judah. Your hand will be at the throat of your enemies, and your father's children will bow down to you.
9 A lion's whelp, is Judah, From the prey, my son hast thou come up! He hath stooped - hath crouched As a lion - or as a lioness, Who shall rouse him?
9 Judah is a lion's whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?
9 Judah is a lion cub. My son, you have gone up from the prey. Crouching like a lion, he lies down, Like a lioness, who would dare rouse him?
10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, Nor the commanders staff a from between his feet, - Until that he come in as a Shiloh, And, his, be the obedience of the peoples:
10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.
10 The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor a ruler's staff from between his feet, until the one comes, who owns them both, and to him will belong the allegiance of nations.
11 Binding, to the vine, his ass, And to the choice vine his ass's colt, He hath washed in wine his raiment, And in the blood of grapes, his mantle:
11 Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass's colt unto the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes:
11 He ties his donkey to a vine, and the colt of his donkey to the choice vine.He washes his clothes in wineand his robes in the blood of grapes.
11 Binding his donkey to the vine and his mare's foal to its thick tendrils, he will wash his garments in wine and his robe in the juice of grapes.
12 Darker - his eyes, than wine, - Whiter - his teeth than milk!
12 His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk.
12 His eyes are darker than wine, and his teeth are whiter than milk.
12 His eyes are darker than wine and his teeth whiter than milk."
13 Zebulon, by a haven of seas, shall he settle down, - Even he, by a haven of ships, With his utmost part upon b Zidon.
13 Zebulun shall dwell at the haven of the sea; and he shall be for an haven of ships; and his border shall be unto Zidon.
13 "Zebulun will settle down near the sea shore and become a safe haven for shipping, bordering Sidon."
14 Issachar, an ass of strength, - couching between the pens;
14 Issachar is a strong ass couching down between two burdens:
14 "Issachar is a strong donkey, resting between sheepfolds.
15 Then beholdeth he rest, that it is good, And the ground that it is pleasant, - So he bendeth his shoulder to bear, And becometh a tributary servant.
15 “When he saw that a resting place was goodAnd that the land was pleasant,He bowed his shoulder to bear burdens,And became a slave at forced labor.
15 And he saw that rest was good, and the land that it was pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant unto tribute.
15 He observed that his resting place was excellent, and that the land was pleasant; he bent down, picked up his burdens, and became a slave at forced labor."
16 Dan, shall vindicate his people, - as one of the tribes of Israel;
16 Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel.
16 "Dan will judge his people as one of Israel's tribes.
17 It cometh to pass that, Dan, is a serpent upon the way, A horned viper, upon the path, - That biteth the heels of the horse, And his rider falleth backwards: -
17 “Dan shall be a serpent in the way,A horned snake in the path,That bites the horse’s heels,So that his rider falls backward.
17 Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward.
17 He will be a snake by the road,a viper beside the path, that bites the horses’ heelsso that its rider falls backward.
17 Dan will be a snake on the path, a viper on the road that snaps at the heels of horses, causing their riders to fall off.
19 Gad! a troop shall troop on him, - But, he, shall troop on the rear.
19 Gad, a troop shall overcome him: but he shall overcome at the last.
19 "Bandits will raid Gad, but Gad will raid them back."
20 Out of Asher, fatness, is his feed, - So, he, setteth forth dainties for a king.
20 Out of Asher his bread shall be fat, and he shall yield royal dainties.
20 "Asher's food will be delicious; he will be a provider of delicacies fit for royalty."
21 Naphtali, is a slender hind, - That putteth forth antlers of beauty. A fruitful bough, is Joseph,
21 Naphtali is a hind let loose: he giveth goodly words.
21 "Naphtali is a free running deer who produces eloquent literature."
22 A fruitful bough over a fountain, - Branches creeping over a wail.
22 Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall:
22 "Joseph is descended from a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine planted near springs of water. His branches climb over walls.
23 So they attack him and have shot, - So they enclose him, do the masters of arrows.
23 “The archers bitterly attacked him,And shot at him and harassed him;
23 The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him:
23 The archers attacked him, shot at him, and were hostile toward him.
23 Even though enemies attacked him, shooting at him and pursuing him viciously,
24 But abideth, as an enduring one, his bow, And supple are the arms of his hands, - From the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, From thence, is the Shepherd the Stone of Israel:
24 But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:)
24 nevertheless his bow remained steady and his arms kept in shape by the strength of Jacob's Mighty One, in the name of the Shepherd, Israel's Rock,
25 From the GOD of thy father who doth help thee And GOD Almighty who doth bless thee, Blessings of the heavens, above, Blessings of the abyss, couching beneath, - Blessings of breasts and womb:
25 From (AD)the God of your father who helps you,And (ab)(AE)by the (ac)Almighty who blesses youWith (AF)blessings of heaven above,Blessings of the deep that lies beneath,Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
25 Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb:
25 by the God of your father who helps you,and by the Almighty who blesses youwith blessings of the heavens above, blessings of the deep that lies below, and blessings of the breasts and the womb.
25 by your father's God who helps you, by the Almighty who will keep on blessing you with blessings from heaven above, with blessings from the deepest ocean, with blessing from the breasts and the womb.
26 The blessings of thy father, have prevailed, Over the blessings of the perpetual mountains, The charm of the age-abiding hills, - They turn out to be, for the head of Joseph, And for the crown of the head of him who was set apart from his brethren.
26 “The blessings of your fatherHave surpassed the blessings of my ancestorsUp to the (ad)utmost bound of (AG)the everlasting hills;May they be on the head of Joseph,And on the crown of the head of the one distinguished among his brothers.
26 The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren.
26 Your father's blessings will prove to be stronger than blessings from the eternal mountains or bounties from the everlasting hills. May they come to rest on Joseph's head, May they be set upon the brow of the one who was separated from his own brothers."
27 Benjamin a wolf that teareth in pieces, In the morning, he eateth prey, And at eventide, he divideth spoil.
27 Benjamin shall ravin as a wolf: in the morning he shall devour the prey, and at night he shall divide the spoil.
27 "Benjamin is vicious like a wolf; what he kills in the morning he devours in the evening."
28 All these, are the twelve tribes of Israel, - And this, is that which their father spake to them when he blessed them, Each man severally according to the blessing wherewith he blessed them.
28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel: and this is it that their father spake unto them, and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them.
28 These are the tribes of Israel, 12 in all, and this was what their father said to them. He blessed them, and he blessed each one with a suitable blessing.
28 That's how Israel blessed these twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father told them when he pronounced his blessing for them, blessing each one with a blessing suitable for them.
29 Then commanded he them and said unto them - I, am about to be gathered unto my people, Bury me among my fathers, - within the cave, that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite:
29 And he charged them, and said unto them, I am to be gathered unto my people: bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite,
29 In his last words, Jacob issued this set of instructions to them all: "I'm about to join our ancestors. Bury me alongside my ancestors in the cave in the field that used to belong to Ephron the Hittite.
30 in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah which is over against Mamre, in the land of Canaan, - which Abraham bought, along with the field, from Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a buryingplace: -
30 In the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a buryingplace.
30 It's the cave in the field near Mamre at Machpelah in the land of Canaan that Abraham bought to serve as a cemetery.
31 There, buried they Abraham, and Sarah his wife, There, buried they Isaac, and Rebekah his wife, - And there, buried I Leah: -
31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah.
31 It's where Abraham and his wife Sarah were buried, where Isaac and his wife Rebekah were buried, and where I buried Leah.
32 buying the field and the cave that is therein, from the sons of Heth.
32 the field and the cave that is in it, purchased from the sons of Heth.”
32 The purchase of the field and of the cave that is therein was from the children of Heth.
32 The field and the cave in it were purchased from the Hittites.”
32 Both the field and the cave that's in it were purchased from the Hittites."
33 So Jacob made an end of commanding his sons, and gathered up his feet into the couch, - and ceased to breathe and was gathered unto his people.
33 And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people.
33 When Jacob had finished instructing his sons, he drew his feet into the bed and died. He was gathered to his people.
33 After concluding this set of instructions to his sons, Jacob tucked his feet up into bed, quit breathing, and was gathered to his ancestors.
