1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.
1 "When Israel was a young child I loved him, and from Egypt I called my son.
2 As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images.
2 The more I called out to them, the farther they fled from me; they sacrificed to Baals, burning incense to carved images.
2 The more they [the prophets] called them [to repentance and obedience],The more they went away from them; They kept sacrificing to the BaalsAnd burning incense to the carved images.
3 I taught Ephraim also to go, taking them by their arms; but they knew not that I healed them.
3 Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, supporting them by their arms, but they never knew that I was healing them.
3 Yet it is I who taught Ephraim to walk,Taking them in My arms [nurturing the young nation];But they did not know that I healed them.
4 I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love: and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid meat unto them.
4 I guided them with human kindness, with loving reins. I acted toward them like one who removes a yoke from their neck; I bent down and fed them.
4 I led them gently with cords of a man, with bonds of love [guiding them],And I was to them as one who lifts up and eases the yoke [of the law] over their jaws; And I bent down to them and fed them.
5 He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return.
5 "They will not return to the land of Egypt; instead, the Assyrian will be their king, because they kept refusing to repent.
5 They will not return to the land of Egypt,But Assyria will be their king [bringing them into captivity]Because they refused to return to Me.
6 And the sword shall abide on his cities, and shall consume his branches, and devour them, because of their own counsels.
6 The sword will fall on their cities, consuming and devouring their fortified gates, despite their planning.
6 The sword will whirl against and fall on their cities,And will demolish the bars of their gates and fortificationsAnd will consume them because of their counsels.
7 And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.
7 My people are determined to turn away from me; though they call to the Most High, no one is worshiping.
7 My people are bent on turning from Me;Though the prophets call them to the One on high,None at all exalts Him.
8 (P)How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I surrender you, O Israel? How can I (j)make you like (Q)Admah? How can I treat you like (R)Zeboiim? My heart is turned over within Me,(k)All My compassions are kindled.
8 How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together.
8 "How can I give up on you, Ephraim? I will deliver you, will I not, Israel? How can I treat you like Admah? I can't make you like Zeboim, can I? My heart stirs within me; my compassion also fans into flame!
9 I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee: and I will not enter into the city.
9 I will not act in my anger; I will not return to destroy Ephraim, For I am God, and not a human the Holy One among you so I will not enter the city in anger.
9 I will not execute the fierceness of My anger;I will not return to Ephraim to destroy him again. For I am God and not man, the Holy One in your midst [who will not revoke My covenant],And I will not come in wrath or enter the city [in judgment].
10 They shall walk after the LORD: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west.
10 They will go after the LORD, who will roar like a lion; and when he roars, the children will come trembling from the west.
10 They will walk after the Lord [in obedience and worship],Who will roar like a lion;He will roar [summoning them]And His sons will come trembling from the west.
11 They shall tremble as a bird out of Egypt, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria: and I will place them in their houses, saith the LORD.
11 Trembling like a bird, they will come out of Egypt, and as a dove from the land of Assyria; and I will settle them in their houses," declares the LORD.
11 They will come trembling and hurriedly like birds from EgyptAnd like doves from the land of Assyria; And I will settle them in their houses [in the land of their inheritance], declares the Lord.
12 Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit: but Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful with the saints.
12 "Ephraim surrounds me with lies, and the house of Israel surrounds me with deceit, But Judah still rules with God, and remains faithful, along with the godly ones."
12 Ephraim surrounds Me with liesAnd the house of Israel with deceit;Judah is also unruly against God,Even against the faithful Holy One.
