Yahweh Has An Indictment

1 Hear the word of the LORD, O ye children of Israel: For the LORD must punish them, that dwell in the land. And why? There is no faithfulness, there is no mercy, there is no knowledge of God in the land:

1 (A)Listen to the word of the Lord, O sons of Israel,For the Lord has a (B)case against the inhabitants of the land,Because there is (C)no (a)faithfulness or (b)kindnessOr (D)knowledge of God in the land.

1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.

1 Hear the word of the Lord,(A) people of Israel, for the Lord has a case(B)against the inhabitants of the land:There is no truth,(C) no faithful love,(D)and no knowledge of God(E) in the land!

1 "Hear this message from the LORD, people of Israel. Indeed, the LORD brings a charge against the people who live in the land for there is no truth and no gracious love or knowledge of God in the land.

2 but swearing, lying, manslaughter, theft, and adultery have gotten the overhand; and one bloodguiltiness followeth another.

2 There is (E)swearing, (F)deception, (G)murder, (H)stealing and (I)adultery.They employ violence, so that (J)bloodshed (c)follows bloodshed.

2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.

2 Cursing,(F) lying,(G) murder,(H) stealing,(I)and adultery(J) are rampant;one act of bloodshed follows another.(K)

2 Swearing, lying, murder, theft, and adultery are rampant, and blood mingles with blood.

3 Therefore shall the land be in a miserable cause, and all they that dwell therein, shall mourn. The beasts in the field, the fowls in the air, and the fishes in the sea shall die.

3 Therefore the land (K)mourns,And everyone who lives in it languishesAlong with the beasts of the field and the birds of the sky,And also the fish of the sea (d)disappear.

3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

3 For this reason the land mourns,(L)and everyone who lives in it languishes, along with the wild animals(M) and the birds of the sky;even the fish of the sea disappear.(N)

3 Therefore the land will mourn, and all who live there will languish, along with the wild animals of the field and the birds of the air. Even the fish in the sea will disappear.

The Lord Accuses The Priests

4 Yet is there none, that will chasten nor reprove another. The priests which should reform other men, are become like the people.

4 Yet let no one (e)(L)find fault, and let none offer reproof; For your people are like those who (M)contend with the priest.

4 Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: for thy people are as they that strive with the priest.

4 But let no one dispute;(O) let no one argue, for My case is against you priests.(a)(b)(P)

4 "Let no one fight or bring charges against another, for my dispute is with you, priest.

5 Therefore stumblest thou in the daytime and the prophet with them in the night. I will bring thy mother to silence, and why?

5 So you will (N)stumble by day,And the prophet also will stumble with you by night; And I will destroy your (O)mother.

5 Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.

5 You will stumble by day;(Q)the prophet will also stumble with you by night. And I will destroy your mother.(R)

5 So you will stumble during the day, the prophet also will stumble with you at night, and I will destroy your mother.

6 My people perish, because they have no knowledge. Seeing then that thou hast refused understanding, therefore will I refuse thee also: so that thou shalt no more be my priest. And forsomuch as thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

6 (P)My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.Because you have (Q)rejected knowledge,I also will (R)reject you from being My priest.Since you have (S)forgotten the (T)law of your God,I also will forget your children.

6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.(S)Because you have rejected knowledge,(T)I will reject you(U) from serving as My priest.Since you have forgotten the law of your God,(V)I will also forget your sons.

6 My people are destroyed because they lack knowledge of me. Because you rejected that knowledge, I will reject you as a priest for me. Since you forget the Law of your God, I will also forget your children.

7 The more they increased in multitude, the more they sinned against me, therefore will I change their honour into shame.

7 The more they (U)multiplied, the more they sinned against Me;I will (V)change their glory into shame.

7 As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.

7 The more they multiplied,(W)the more they sinned against Me.I(c) will change their honor(d) into disgrace.(X)

7 "The more they increased in number, the more they sinned against me, so I will change their glory into shame.

8 They eat up the sins of my people, and courage them in their wickedness.

8 They (W)feed on the (f)sin of My peopleAnd (X)direct their desire toward their iniquity.

8 They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity.

8 They feed on the sin(e) of My people;(Y)they have an appetite for their transgressions.(Z)

8 They feed on the sin of my people; they purpose in their heart to transgress.

9 Thus the priest is become like the people. Wherefore I will punish them for their wicked ways, and reward them according to their own imaginations.

9 And it will be, like people, (Y)like priest; So I will (Z)punish them for their waysAnd repay them for their deeds.

9 And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings.

9 The same judgment will happento both people and priests.(AA)I will punish them for their ways(AB)and repay them for their deeds.

9 So it will be: like people, like priest. I will punish them for their lifestyles, rewarding them according to their behavior.

10 They shall eat, and not have enough: they have used whoredom, therefore shall they not prosper: and why? They have forsaken the LORD, and not regarded him.

10 (AA)They will eat, but not have enough; They will (AB)play the harlot, but not increase,Because they have (g)(AC)stopped giving heed to the Lord.

10 For they shall eat, and not have enough: they shall commit whoredom, and shall not increase: because they have left off to take heed to the LORD.

10 They will eat but not be satisfied;(AC)they will be promiscuous(AD) but not multiply. For they have abandoned their devotion to the Lord.(AE)

10 They will eat, but will not be satisfied. They will engage in prostitution, but they won't increase, because they have stopped listening to the LORD.

11 Whoredom, wine and drunkenness take the heart away.

11 Harlotry, (AD)wine and new wine take away the (h)understanding.

11 Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.

11 Promiscuity,(AF) wine, and new winetake away one’s understanding.(AG)

11 "Sexual immorality, wine, and fresh wine seduce the heart of my people.

God's Case Against The People

12 My people ask counsel at their stocks, their staff must tell them. For a whorish mind hath deceived them, so that they commit fornication against their God.

12 My people (AE)consult their wooden idol, and their diviner’s wand informs them; For a spirit of harlotry has led them astray,And they have played the harlot, departing (i)from their God.

12 My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God.

12 My people consult their wooden idols,(AH)and their divining rods inform them. For a spirit of promiscuity leads them astray;(AI)they act promiscuously(AJ)in disobedience to(f) their God.

12 My people seek counsel from their piece of wood, and their diviner's rod speaks to them. For a spirit of prostitution causes them to go astray; in their immorality they desert their God.

13 They make sacrifices upon the high mountains, and burn their incense upon the hills, yea among the oaks, groves and bushes, for there are good shadows. Therefore your daughters are become harlots, and your spouses have broken their wedlock.

13 They offer sacrifices on the (AF)tops of the mountainsAnd (j)(AG)burn incense on the hills,(AH)Under oak, poplar and terebinth,Because their shade is pleasant. Therefore your daughters play the harlotAnd your (k)brides commit adultery.

13 They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the shadow thereof is good: therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, and your spouses shall commit adultery.

13 They sacrifice on the mountaintops,(AK)and they burn offerings on the hills,(AL)and under oaks, poplars, and terebinths,(AM)because their shade is pleasant. And so your daughters act promiscuouslyand your daughters-in-law commit adultery.

13 They offer sacrifices on the mountain tops, burning offerings on the hills, under oaks, poplars, and terebinth trees, since their shade is very good. Therefore your daughters are prostitutes and your daughters-in-law commit adultery.

14 I will not punish your daughters for being defiled, and your brides that became whores: seeing the fathers themselves have meddled with harlots, and offered with unthriftiness: but the people that will not understand must be punished.

14 I will not punish your daughters when they play the harlotOr your (l)brides when they commit adultery,For the men themselves go apart with harlotsAnd offer sacrifices with (AI)temple prostitutes; So the people without understanding are (m)ruined.

14 I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your spouses when they commit adultery: for themselves are separated with whores, and they sacrifice with harlots: therefore the people that doth not understand shall fall.

14 I will not punish your daughterswhen they act promiscuouslyor your daughters-in-lawwhen they commit adultery, for the men themselves go off with prostitutes(AN)and make sacrifices with cult prostitutes.(AO)People without discernment are doomed.(AP)

14 However, I'm not going to punish your daughters when they commit prostitution, nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery, because their men are themselves immoral they offer sacrifices with prostitutes. These people who aren't discerning will stumble.

19 The wind hath bound her up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

19 A wind with its wings will carry them off,(j)(AX)and they will be ashamed of their sacrifices. >
