The Restoration Of Israel

1 The Lord will certainly have compassion on Jacob; he will again choose Israel as his special people and restore them to their land. Resident foreigners will join them and unite with the family of Jacob.

1 For the LORD will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land: and the strangers shall be joined with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob.

1 When the Lord will (A)have compassion on Jacob and again (B)choose Israel, and settle them in their own land, then (C)strangers will join them and attach themselves to the house of Jacob.

1 For the Lord will have compassion(A) on Jacob and will choose Israel again.(B) He will settle them on their own land.(C) The foreigner will join them and be united with the house of Jacob.(D)

1 However, the LORD will have compassion on Jacob and will once again choose Israel. He will settle them in their own land, and foreigners will join them, affiliating themselves with the house of Jacob.

2 Nations will take them and bring them back to their own place. Then the family of Jacob will make foreigners their servants as they settle in the Lord's land. They will make their captors captives and rule over the ones who oppressed them.

2 And the people shall take them, and bring them to their place: and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of the LORD for servants and handmaids: and they shall take them captives, whose captives they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors.

2 The peoples will take them along and bring them to their place, and the (D)house of Israel will possess them as an inheritance in the land of the Lord (E)as male servants and female servants; and (a)they will take their captors captive and will rule over their oppressors.

2 The nations will escort Israel and bring it to its homeland. Then the house of Israel will possess them as male and female slaves in the Lord’s land.(E) They will make captives of their captors and will rule over their oppressors.

2 Many nations will take them and bring them to their land and their own place. The house of Israel will put those nations to conscripted labor in the LORD's land. They will take captive those who were their captors, and will rule continually over those who oppressed them.

The Downfall Of The King Of Babylon

3 When the Lord gives you relief from your suffering and anxiety, and from the hard labor which you were made to perform,

3 And it shall come to pass in the day that the LORD shall give thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard bondage wherein thou wast made to serve,

3 And it will be in the day when the Lord gives you (F)rest from your pain and turmoil and harsh service in which you have been enslaved,

3 When the Lord gives you rest from your pain,(F) torment, and the hard labor(G) you were forced to do,

3 At the time, when the LORD gives you rest from your suffering, turmoil, and the cruel bondage which they forced you to serve,

4 you will taunt the king of Babylon with these words: "Look how the oppressor has met his end! Hostility has ceased!

4 That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!

4 that you will (G)take up this (b)taunt against the king of Babylon, and say,“How (H)the oppressor has ceased,And how (c)fury has ceased!

4 you will sing this song of contempt about the king of Babylon(H) and say:How the oppressor has quieted down, and how the raging(a) has become quiet!

4 you will lift up this song of mockery against the king of Babylon: "How the oppressor has come to an end! How the attacker has ceased!

5 The Lord has broken the club of the wicked, the scepter of rulers.

5 The LORD hath broken the staff of the wicked, and the sceptre of the rulers.

5 “The Lord has broken the staff of the wicked,The scepter of rulers

5 The Lord has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers.

5 The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of rulers,

6 It furiously struck down nations with unceasing blows. It angrily ruled over nations, oppressing them without restraint.

6 He who smote the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted, and none hindereth.

6 (I)Which used to strike the peoples in fury with unceasing strokes,Which (d)subdued the nations in anger with unrestrained persecution.

6 It struck the peoples in angerwith unceasing blows. It subdued the nations in ragewith relentless persecution.

6 that struck down nations in anger with unceasing blows, that oppressed nations in fury with relentless persecution.

7 The whole earth rests and is quiet; they break into song.

7 The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet: they break forth into singing.

7 “The whole earth is at rest and is quiet; They (J)break forth into shouts of joy.

7 All the earth is calm and at rest;people shout with a ringing cry.

7 The entire earth is at rest and peace; its inhabitants break into song.

8 The evergreens also rejoice over your demise, as do the cedars of Lebanon, singing, 'Since you fell asleep, no woodsman comes up to chop us down!'

8 Yea, the fir trees rejoice at thee, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us.

8 “Even the (K)cypress trees rejoice over you, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying,‘Since you were laid low, no tree cutter comes up against us.’

8 Even the cypresses and the cedars of Lebanonrejoice over you:(I)“Since you have been laid low,no woodcutter has come against us.”

8 Even the cypresses rejoice over you, as do the cedars of Lebanon, saying, "Now that you've been laid low, no woodcutter comes up against us.'

9 Sheol below is stirred up about you, ready to meet you when you arrive. It rouses the spirits of the dead for you, all the former leaders of the earth; it makes all the former kings of the nations rise from their thrones.

9 Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.

9 (L)Sheol from beneath is excited over you to meet you when you come;It arouses for you the (e)spirits of the dead, all the (f)leaders of the earth; It raises all the kings of the nations from their thrones.

9 Sheol below is eager to greet your coming. He stirs up the spirits of the departed for you—all the rulers(b) of the earth. He makes all the kings of the nationsrise from their thrones.

9 "The afterlife below is all astir to meet you when you arrive; it rouses up the spirits of the dead to greet you everyone who used to be world leaders. It has raised up from their thrones all who used to be kings of the nations.

10 All of them respond to you, saying: 'You too have become weak like us! You have become just like us!

10 All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us?

10 (M)They will all respond and say to you,‘Even you have been made weak as we,You have become like us.

10 They all respond to you, saying:“You too have become as weak as we are;you have become like us!

10 In answer, all of them will tell you, "You've also become as weak as we are! You have become just like us!'

11 Your splendor has been brought down to Sheol, as well as the sound of your stringed instruments. You lie on a bed of maggots, with a blanket of worms over you.

11 Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.

11 ‘Your (N)pomp and the music of your harpsHave been brought down to Sheol;Maggots are spread out as your bed beneath youAnd worms are your covering.’

11 Your splendor has been brought down to Sheol, along with the music of your harps.Maggots are spread out under you,and worms cover you.”

11 Your pomp has been brought down to Sheol, along with the noise of your harps. Maggots are spread out beneath you, and worms are your covering."

12 Look how you have fallen from the sky, O shining one, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the ground, O conqueror of the nations!

12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

12 “How you have (O)fallen from heaven,O (g)(P)star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth,You who have weakened the nations!

12 Shining morning star,(c)(J)how you have fallen from the heavens!(K)You destroyer of nations, you have been cut down to the ground.

12 "How you have fallen from heaven, Day Star, son of the Dawn! How you have been thrown down to earth, you who laid low the nation!

13 You said to yourself, "I will climb up to the sky. Above the stars of El I will set up my throne. I will rule on the mountain of assembly on the remote slopes of Zaphon.

13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

13 “But you said in your heart,‘I will (Q)ascend to heaven;I will (R)raise my throne above the stars of God,And I will sit on the mount of assemblyIn the recesses of the north.

13 You said to yourself:“I will ascend to the heavens;(L)I will set up my throneabove the stars of God.(M)I will sit on the mount of the gods’ assembly,in the remotest parts of the North.(d)(N)

13 You said in your heart, "I'll ascend to heaven, above the stars of God. I'll erect my throne; I'll sit on the Mount of Assembly in the far reaches of the north;

14 I will climb up to the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High!"

14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

14 ‘I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;(S)I will make myself like the Most High.’

14 I will ascend above the highest clouds;I will make myself like the Most High.”

14 I'll ascend above the tops of the clouds; I'll make myself like the Most High.'

15 But you were brought down to Sheol, to the remote slopes of the pit.

15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

15 “Nevertheless you (T)will be thrust down to Sheol,To the recesses of the pit.

15 But you will be brought down to Sheolinto the deepest regions of the Pit.(O)

15 But you are brought down to join the dead, to the far reaches of the Pit.

16 Those who see you stare at you, they look at you carefully, thinking: "Is this the man who shook the earth, the one who made kingdoms tremble?

16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

16 “Those who see you will gaze at you,They will (h)ponder over you, saying,‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble,Who shook kingdoms,

16 Those who see you will stare at you;they will look closely at you:“Is this the man who caused the earth to tremble, who shook the kingdoms,

16 "Those who see you will stare at you. They will wonder about you: "Is this the man who made the earth tremble, who made kingdoms quake,

17 Is this the one who made the world like a desert, who ruined its cities, and refused to free his prisoners so they could return home?"'

17 That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?

17 Who made the world like a (U)wildernessAnd overthrew its cities,Who (V)did not (i)allow his prisoners to go home?’

17 who turned the world into a wilderness,(P)who destroyed its citiesand would not release the prisoners to return home?”

17 who made the world like a desert, who destroyed its cities, who would not open the jails for his prisoners?'

18 As for all the kings of the nations, all of them lie down in splendor, each in his own tomb.

18 All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house.

18 “All the kings of the nations lie in glory,Each in his own (j)tomb.

18 All the kings of the nationslie in splendor, each in his own tomb.

18 All the kings of the nations lie in state, each in his own tomb.

19 But you have been thrown out of your grave like a shoot that is thrown away. You lie among the slain, among those who have been slashed by the sword, among those headed for the stones of the pit, as if you were a mangled corpse.

19 But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet.

19 “But you have been (W)cast out of your tombLike (k)a rejected branch,(l)Clothed with the slain who are pierced with a sword,Who go down to the stones of the (X)pitLike a (Y)trampled corpse.

19 But you are thrown out without a grave, like a worthless branch, covered by those slain with the swordand dumped into a rocky pit like a trampled corpse.

19 But you are cast away from your grave, like a repulsive branch, your clothing is the slain, those pierced by the sword; those who go down to the Pit. Like a dead body trampled underfoot,

20 You will not be buried with them, because you destroyed your land and killed your people. The offspring of the wicked will never be mentioned again.

20 Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned.

20 “You will not be united with them in burial,Because you have ruined your country,You have slain your people.May the (Z)offspring of evildoers not be mentioned forever.

20 You will not join them in burial, because you destroyed your landand slaughtered your own people. The offspring of evildoerswill never be remembered.(Q)

20 you will not be united with them in burial, for you have destroyed your land, you have slain your people. People will never mention the descendants of those who practice evil again!

21 Prepare to execute his sons for the sins their ancestors have committed. They must not rise up and take possession of the earth, or fill the surface of the world with cities."

21 Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities.

21 “Prepare for his sons a place of slaughterBecause of the (AA)iniquity of their fathers. They must not arise and take possession of the earthAnd fill the face of the world with cities.”

21 Prepare a place of slaughter for his sons, because of the iniquity(R) of their fathers. They will never rise up to possess a landor fill the surface of the earth with cities.

21 Prepare a massacre for his sons because of the guilt of their forefathers! They are not to rise and inherit the earth, and cover the surface of the world with cities."

God Will Destroy Babylon

22 "I will rise up against them," says the Lord who commands armies. "I will blot out all remembrance of Babylon and destroy all her people, including the offspring she produces," says the Lord.

22 For I will rise up against them, saith the LORD of hosts, and cut off from Babylon the name, and remnant, and son, and nephew, saith the LORD.

22 “I will rise up against them,” declares the Lord of hosts, “and will cut off from Babylon (AB)name and survivors, (AC)offspring and posterity,” declares the Lord.

22 “I will rise up against them”—this is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts—“and I will cut off from Babylon her reputation, remnant, offspring, and posterity”—this is the Lord’s declaration.

22 "I will rise up against them," declares the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, "and I will eliminate from Babylon her name and survivors, her offspring and descendants," declares the LORD.

23 "I will turn her into a place that is overrun with wild animals and covered with pools of stagnant water. I will get rid of her, just as one sweeps away dirt with a broom," says the Lord who commands armies.

23 I will also make it a possession for the bittern, and pools of water: and I will sweep it with the besom of destruction, saith the LORD of hosts.

23 “I will also make it a possession for the (AD)hedgehog and swamps of water, and I will sweep it with the broom of (AE)destruction,” declares the Lord of hosts.

23 “I will make her a swampland and a region for screech owls,(e) and I will sweep her away with a broom of destruction.”This is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts.

23 "And I'm going to make it a possession of the hedgehog pools of water and I'll sweep with the broom of destruction," declares the LORD of the Heavenly Armies.

Oracle Of Judgment On Assyria

24 The Lord who commands armies makes this solemn vow: "Be sure of this: Just as I have intended, so it will be; just as I have planned, it will happen.

24 The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand:

24 The Lord of hosts has sworn saying, “Surely, (AF)just as I have intended so it has happened, and just as I have planned so it will stand,

24 The Lord of Hosts has sworn:As I have purposed, so it will be;as I have planned it, so it will happen.(S)

24 The LORD of the Heavenly Armies has sworn: "Surely as I have planned, that's what she will become; and just as I have determined, so will it remain

25 I will break Assyria in my land, I will trample them underfoot on my hills. Their yoke will be removed from my people, the burden will be lifted from their shoulders.

25 That I will break the Assyrian in my land, and upon my mountains tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders.

25 to (AG)break Assyria in My land, and I will trample him on My mountains. Then his (AH)yoke will be removed from them and his burden removed from their shoulder.

25 I will break Assyria(T) in My land;I will tread him down on My mountain. Then his yoke will be taken from them, and his burden will be removed from their shoulders.

25 to crush the Assyrian in my land, and on my mountains I will trample him down. His yoke will turn away from you, and his burden from your shoulders."

26 This is the plan I have devised for the whole earth; my hand is ready to strike all the nations."

26 This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth: and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations.

26 This is the (AI)plan (m)devised against the whole earth; and this is the (AJ)hand that is stretched out against all the nations.

26 This is the plan(U) preparedfor the whole earth, and this is the hand stretched outagainst all the nations.

26 "This is what I've planned for the whole earth, and this is the hand that is stretched out over all the nations.

27 Indeed, the Lord who commands armies has a plan, and who can possibly frustrate it? His hand is ready to strike, and who can possibly stop it?

27 For the LORD of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?

27 For (AK)the Lord of hosts has planned, and who can frustrate it? And as for His stretched-out hand, who can turn it back?”

27 The Lord of Hosts Himself has planned it;therefore, who can stand in its way?It is His hand that is outstretched,so who can turn it back?

27 For the LORD of the Heavenly Armies has planned, and who can thwart him? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?"

Oracle Of Judgment On Philistia

28 In the year King Ahaz died, this message was revealed:

28 In the year that king Ahaz died was this burden.

28 In the (AL)year that King Ahaz died this (n)(AM)oracle came:

28 In the year that King Ahaz died,(V) this oracle came:(W)

28 In the year that King Ahaz died this message came:

29 Don't be so happy, all you Philistines, just because the club that beat you has been broken! For a viper will grow out of the serpent's root, and its fruit will be a darting adder.

29 Rejoice not thou, whole Palestina, because the rod of him that smote thee is broken: for out of the serpent's root shall come forth a cockatrice, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent.

29 “Do not rejoice, O (AN)Philistia, all of you,Because the rod that (AO)struck you is broken; For from the serpent’s root a (AP)viper will come out,And its fruit will be a (AQ)flying serpent.

29 Don’t rejoice, all of you in Philistia, because the rod of the one who struck you(X) is broken. For a viper will come from the root(f) of a snake, and from its egg comes a flying serpent.(Y)

29 "Don't rejoice, all of you Philistines, that the rod that struck you is broken, because from the snake's root a viper will spring up, and its offspring will be a darting, poisonous serpent.

30 The poor will graze in my pastures; the needy will rest securely. But I will kill your root by famine; it will put to death all your survivors.

30 And the firstborn of the poor shall feed, and the needy shall lie down in safety: and I will kill thy root with famine, and he shall slay thy remnant.

30 (o)Those who are most (AR)helpless will eat,And the needy will lie down in security;I will (p)destroy your root with (AS)famine,And it will kill off your survivors.

30 Then the firstborn(Z) of the poor will be well fed,and the impoverished will lie down in safety, but I will kill your root with hunger, and your remnant will be slain.(g)

30 The firstborn of the poor will find pasture, and the needy will lie down in safety; but I'll kill your root by famine, and I'll execute your survivors.

31 Wail, O city gate! Cry out, O city! Melt with fear, all you Philistines! For out of the north comes a cloud of smoke, and there are no stragglers in its ranks.

31 Howl, O gate; cry, O city; thou, whole Palestina, art dissolved: for there shall come from the north a smoke, and none shall be alone in his appointed times.

31 “Wail, O (AT)gate; cry, O city;(q)Melt away, O (AU)Philistia, all of you;For smoke comes from the (AV)north,And (AW)there is no straggler in his ranks.

31 Wail, you gates!(AA) Cry out, city!Tremble with fear,(AB) all Philistia! For a cloud of dust is coming from the north,(AC)and there is no one missing from the invader’s ranks.

31 Wail, you gate! Cry out, you city! Melt away, all you Philistines! For smoke comes from the north, and there's no one to take measure in its festivals.

32 How will they respond to the messengers of this nation? Indeed, the Lord has made Zion secure; the oppressed among his people will find safety in her.

32 What shall one then answer the messengers of the nation? That the LORD hath founded Zion, and the poor of his people shall trust in it.

32 “How then will one answer the (AX)messengers of the nation? That (AY)the Lord has founded Zion,And (AZ)the afflicted of His people will seek refuge in it.”

32 What answer will be given to the messengers from that nation? The Lord has founded Zion,(AD)and His afflicted people find refuge in her.

32 How will they answer the messengers of the nation? "The LORD has founded Zion, and in it the afflicted among his people will find refuge."
