Yahweh Blesses Chosen Israel

1 "But now hear, Jacob my servant, and Israel, whom I have chosen.

1 “But now listen, O Jacob, My (A)servant,And Israel, whom I have chosen:

1 Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen:

1 “And now listen, Jacob My servant,Israel whom I have chosen.(A)

1 "But now listen, Jacob my servant and Israel whom I have chosen:

2 Thus says Yahweh, who made you, and who formed you in [the] womb and will help you: you must not fear, my servant Jacob, and Jeshurun whom I have chosen.

2 Thus says the Lord who made youAnd (B)formed you from the womb, who (C)will help you,(D)Do not fear, O Jacob My servant; And you (E)Jeshurun whom I have chosen.

2 Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.

2 This is the word of the Lordyour Maker who formed you from the womb; He(a) will help you:Do not fear; Jacob is My servant;I have chosen Jeshurun.(b)(B)

2 This what the LORD says, the one who made you, formed you from the womb, and who will help you: "Don't be afraid, Jacob my servant, and Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.

3 For I will pour out water on a thirsty [land] and streams on dry ground. I will pour my spirit out on your descendants and my blessing on your offspring.

3 ‘For (F)I will pour out water on (a)the thirsty landAnd streams on the dry ground;I will (G)pour out My Spirit on your (H)offspringAnd My blessing on your descendants;

3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

3 For I will pour water on the thirsty landand streams on the dry ground;I will pour out My Spirit(C) on your descendantsand My blessing on your offspring.

3 For I'll pour water upon thirsty ground and streams on parched land. So will I pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing upon your descendants.

4 And they shall sprout {among} [the] grass like willows by a watercourse of water.

4 And they will spring up (b)among the grassLike (I)poplars by streams of water.’

4 And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.

4 They will sprout among(c) the grasslike poplars by flowing streams.

4 They'll spring up as among the green grass, like willows by flowing streams.

5 This [one] will say, 'I belong to Yahweh!' And that [one] will be called by the name of Jacob, and another will write [on] his hand 'Yahweh's' and {take the name} of Israel."

5 “This one will say, ‘I am the Lord’s’;And that one (c)will call on the name of Jacob; And another will (J)write (d)on his hand, ‘Belonging to the Lord,’And will name Israel’s name with honor.

5 One shall say, I am the LORD'S; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the LORD, and surname himself by the name of Israel.

5 This one will say, ‘I am the Lord’s’;another will call himself by the name of Jacob;still another will write on his hand, ‘The Lord’s,’and name himself by the name of Israel.”

5 One will say, "I belong to the LORD,' and another will call himself by the name of Jacob; still another will have written on his hand, "the LORD's,' and will adopt the name of Israel."

Yahweh The Only God

6 Thus says Yahweh, the king of Israel, and its redeemer, Yahweh of hosts: "I [am the] first, and I [am the] last, and there is no god besides me.

6 “Thus says the Lord, the (K)King of Israel and his (L)Redeemer, the Lord of hosts:‘I am the (M)first and I am the last,And there is no God (N)besides Me.

6 Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

6 This is what the Lord, the King of Israel and its Redeemer,(D) the Lord of Hosts, says:I am the first and I am the last.(E)There is no God but Me.(F)

6 This is what the LORD says, the King of Israel and its Redeemer the LORD of the Heavenly Armies is his name "I am the first and I am the last, and apart from me there is no God.

7 And who [is] like me? Let him proclaim [it]! And let him declare it and set it in order for me {since I established an eternal people} and things that are to come, and let them tell them [the things] that are coming.

7 ‘Who is like Me? (O)Let him proclaim and declare it;Yes, let him recount it to Me in order,(e)From the time that I established the ancient (f)nation. And let them declare to them the things that are comingAnd the events that are going to take place.

7 And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them shew unto them.

7 Who, like Me, can announce the future?Let him say so and make a case before Me,(G)since I have established an ancient people.Let these gods declare(d) the coming things, and what will take place.

7 Who is like me? Let him proclaim and declare it, and lay it out for himself since he made an ancient people. And let him speak future events; let them tell him what will happen.

8 You must not tremble, and you must not be paralyzed with fear. Have I not made you hear from of old and declared [it], and you [are] my witnesses? Is there a god besides me? And there is no rock! I know none!"

8 ‘Do not tremble and do not be afraid;(P)Have I not long since announced it to you and declared it?And (Q)you are My witnesses. Is there any God (R)besides Me,Or is there any other (S)Rock?I know of none.’”

8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.

8 Do not be startled or afraid.Have I not told you and declared it long ago?You are my witnesses!(H)Is there any God but Me?(I)There is no other Rock;(J) I do not know any.

8 Don't tremble, and don't be afraid. Didn't I tell you and announce it long ago? You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me? There is no other Rock I don't know of any."

Idolatry Is Ridiculous

9 All those who form an idol [are] nothing, and their delightful things do not profit. And their witnesses do not see or know, so they will be ashamed.

9 Those who fashion (g)a graven image are all of them futile, and their precious things are of no profit; even their own witnesses fail to see or know, so that they will be (T)put to shame.

9 They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.

9 All who make idols are nothing, and what they treasure does not profit.Their witnesses do not see or know anything,so they will be put to shame.(K)

9 Now, all the forming of images means nothing, and the things they treasure are worthless. Their own witnesses cannot see, and they know nothing. So they will be put to shame.

10 Who would form a god and cast an image of [which] he cannot profit?

10 Who has fashioned a god or cast (h)an idol to (U)no profit?

10 Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven image that is profitable for nothing?

10 Who makes a god or casts a metal imagefor no profit?(L)

10 Who would shape a god or cast an image that profits nothing?

11 Look! all his companions shall be ashamed, and [the] artisans [are] human! Let all of them assemble; let them stand up. They shall tremble; they shall be ashamed together.

11 Behold, all his companions will be (V)put to shame, for the craftsmen themselves are mere men. Let them all assemble themselves, let them stand up, let them tremble, let them together be put to shame.

11 Behold, all his fellows shall be ashamed: and the workmen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; yet they shall fear, and they shall be ashamed together.

11 Look, all its worshipers will be put to shame, and the craftsmen are humans. They all will assemble and stand;they all will be startled and put to shame.

11 To be sure, all who associate with it will be put to shame; and as for the craftsmen, they are only human. Let them all gather together and take their stand. Then let them be terrified they will be humiliated together.

12 [The] {ironsmith} works in the coals [with his] tool and forms it with hammers. And he makes it with {his strong arm}; indeed, he becomes hungry, and {he lacks} strength; he does not drink water, and he is faint.

12 The (W)man shapes iron into a cutting tool and does his work over the coals, (i)fashioning it with hammers and working it with his strong arm. He also gets hungry and (j)his strength fails; he drinks no water and becomes weary.

12 The smith with the tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms: yea, he is hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water, and is faint.

12 The ironworker labors over the coals, shapes the idol with hammers, and works it with his strong arm. Also he grows hungry and his strength fails;he doesn’t drink water and is faint.

12 The blacksmith prepares a tool and works in the coals, then fashions an idol with hammers, working by the strength of his arm. He even becomes hungry and loses his strength; he drinks no water and grows faint.

13 [The] {woodworker} stretches out a line; he makes an outline [of] it with marker. He makes it with knife and makes an outline [of] it with compass. He makes it like [the] image of a man, like [the] beauty of a human, to dwell [in] a temple.

13 (X)Another shapes wood, he extends a measuring line; he outlines it with red chalk. He works it with planes and outlines it with a compass, and makes it like the form of a man, like the beauty of (Y)man, so that it may sit in a (Z)house.

13 The carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.

13 The woodworker stretches out a measuring line,he outlines it with a stylus;he shapes it with chiselsand outlines it with a compass. He makes it according to a human likeness,(M)like a beautiful person,to dwell in a temple.

13 The carpenter measures it with a line; he traces its shape with a stylus, then fashions it with planes and shapes it with a compass. He makes the idol like a human figure, with human beauty, to be at home in a shrine.

14 Cutting down cedars for himself, he {chooses} a holm tree and an oak, and he lets it grow strong for him among [the] trees of [the] forest. He plants a cedar, and [the] rain makes [it] grow.

14 Surely he cuts cedars for himself, and takes a (k)cypress or an oak and (l)raises it for himself among the trees of the forest. He plants a fir, and the rain makes it grow.

14 He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish it.

14 He cuts down(e) cedars for his use,or he takes a cypress or an oak.He lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest. He plants a laurel, and the rain makes it grow.

14 He cuts down cedars, or chooses a cypress tree or an oak, and lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest. Or he plants a cedar, and the rain makes it grow.

15 And it {becomes fuel for a human}, and he takes some of it and grows warm; also, he kindles a fire and bakes bread. Also, he makes a god and bows in worship; he makes himself an image and bows down to it!

15 Then it becomes something for a man to burn, so he takes one of them and warms himself; he also makes a fire to bake bread. He also (AA)makes a god and worships it; he makes it a graven image and (AB)falls down before it.

15 Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto.

15 It serves as fuel for man.He takes some of it and warms himself;also he kindles a fire and bakes bread;he even makes it into a god and worships it;he makes an idol from it and bows down to it.

15 He divides it up for people to burn. Taking part of it, he warms himself, makes a fire, and bakes bread. Or perhaps he constructs a god and worships it. He makes it an idol and bows down to it.

16 He burns half of it in [the] fire; he eats meat over half of it; he roasts a roast and is satisfied. Also he grows warm and says, "Ah! I am warm! I see [the] fire!"

16 Half of it he burns in the fire; over this half he eats meat as he roasts a roast and is satisfied. He also warms himself and says, “Aha! I am warm, I have seen the fire.”

16 He burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfied: yea, he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire:

16 He burns half of it in a fire, and he roasts meat on that half.He eats the roast and is satisfied. He warms himself and says, “Ah!I am warm, I see the blaze.”

16 Half the wood he burns in the fire, and over that half he places meat so he can eat. He sits by its coals, warms himself, and says, "Ah! I am warm in front of the fire."

17 And he makes the remainder of it into a god! He bows down to his idol, and he bows in worship and prays to him, and he says, "Save me, for you [are] my god!"

17 But the rest of it he (AC)makes into a god, his graven image. He falls down before it and worships; he also (AD)prays to it and says, “Deliver me, for you are my god.”

17 And the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god.

17 He makes a god or his idol with the rest of it.He bows down to it and worships; He prays to it,(N) “Save me, for you are my god.”

17 And the rest of it he makes into a god. To blocks of wood he bows down, worships, prays, and says, "Save me, since you are my god."

18 They do not know, and they do not understand, for their eyes [are] besmeared {so that they cannot see}, their {minds} {so that they have no insight}.

18 They do not (AE)know, nor do they understand, for He has (AF)smeared over their eyes so that they cannot see and their hearts so that they cannot comprehend.

18 They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand.

18 Such people(f) do not comprehendand cannot understand, for He has shut their eyes(g) so they cannot see,and their minds so they cannot understand.

18 They don't realize; they don't understand, because their eyes are plastered over so they cannot see, and their minds, too, so they cannot understand.

19 And {no one takes it to heart}, and [there is] no knowledge and no understanding to say, "I burned half of it in [the] fire and also I baked bread on its coals; I roasted meat, and I have eaten. And I shall make [the] rest of it into an abomination! I shall bow down to a block of wood!"

19 No one (m)recalls, nor is there (AG)knowledge or understanding to say, “I have burned half of it in the fire and also have baked bread over its coals. I roast meat and eat it. Then (n)I make the rest of it into an (AH)abomination, (o)I fall down before a block of wood!”

19 And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?

19 No one reflects,no one has the perception or insight to say,“I burned half of it in the fire,I also baked bread on its coals,I roasted meat and ate.I will make something detestable(O) with the rest of it,and I will bow down to a block of wood.”

19 No one stops to think. No one has the knowledge or understanding to think yes to think! "Half of it I burned in the fire. I even baked bread on its coals, and I roasted meat and ate it. And am I about to make detestable things from what is left? Am I about to bow down to blocks of wood?"

20 [He] feeds [on] ashes; a {deceived mind} misleads him. And he cannot save {himself}, and he cannot say, "Is [this] not an illusion in my right hand?"

20 He (p)(AI)feeds on ashes; a (AJ)deceived heart has turned him aside. And he cannot deliver (q)himself, nor say, “(AK)Is there not a lie in my right hand?”

20 He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

20 He feeds on(h) ashes. His deceived mind has led him astray, and he cannot deliver himself,or say, “Isn’t there a lie in my right hand?”(P)

20 He tends ashes. A deceived mind has lead him astray. It cannot be his life, nor can he say, "There's a lie in my right hand."

21 "Remember these things, Jacob, and Israel, for you [are] my servant: I formed you; you [are] my servant; Israel, you will not be forgotten by me!

22 “I have (AO)wiped out your transgressions like a thick cloudAnd your sins like a (r)heavy mist.(AP)Return to Me, for I have (AQ)redeemed you.”

22 I have swept away your transgressions like a cloud,(R)and your sins like a mist.Return to Me,(S)for I have redeemed you.(T)

22 I've wiped away your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist. Return to me; because I've redeemed you.

23 Sing for joy, heavens, for Yahweh has done [it]! Shout, depths of [the] earth! Break forth, mountains, [in] rejoicing, forest and every tree in it, for Yahweh has redeemed Jacob, and he will show his glory in Israel!

23 (AR)Shout for joy, O heavens, for the Lord has done it!Shout joyfully, you lower parts of the earth;(AS)Break forth into a shout of joy, you mountains,O forest, and every tree in it;For (AT)the Lord has redeemed JacobAnd in Israel He (AU)shows forth His glory.

23 Sing, O ye heavens; for the LORD hath done it: shout, ye lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel.

23 Rejoice, heavens,(U) for the Lord has acted;shout, depths of the earth.Break out into singing, mountains, forest, and every tree in it.For the Lord has redeemed Jacob, and glorifies Himself through Israel.(V)

23 "Shout for joy, you heavens, for the LORD has done it! Shout aloud, you depths of the earth! Burst out with singing, you mountains, you forest, and all your trees! For the LORD has redeemed Jacob and will display his glory in Israel.
